Introduction, Dan Bernstein Jan 1999

Introduction, Dan Bernstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This volume is about motivation and gender. The chapters outline recent research and conceptual analysis related to four important motivational constructs-sexuality, emotion, competition, and aggression. In each case the author has examined the relation between the motivational construct and gender; the chapters describe those relations and analyze their origins and implications. There are two primary ideas that connect these accounts of gender and motivation: the authors generally report great diversity within gender groups in the degree to which these motivational characteristics are found, and they note that there is much to be considered in exactly how these motivational constructs are …

Common Parasites, Diseases And Injuries Of Freshwater Fishes In The Northwest Territories And Nunavut, D. B. Stewart, L. M. J. Bernier Jan 1999

Common Parasites, Diseases And Injuries Of Freshwater Fishes In The Northwest Territories And Nunavut, D. B. Stewart, L. M. J. Bernier

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

This booklet gives basic information on common parasites, diseases and injuries of fish harvested from fresh water in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (Canada). It answers some of the more common questions asked by Aboriginal, domestic, sport and commercial harvesters, and by fisheries researchers. It is not an in depth treatment of fish health. Parasites that are uncommon or too small to be seen with the naked eye and diseases that are poorly known are not discussed. Relatively little research has been conducted on fish parasites in the region, less still on fish diseases and injuries.

Search For The Ebola Virus Reservoir In Kikwit, Democratic Republic Of The Congo: Reflections On A Vertebrate Collection, Herwig Leirs, James N. Mills, John W. Krebs, James E. Childs, Dudu Akaibe, Neal Woollen, George Ludwig, Clarence J. Peters, Thomas G. Ksiazek Jan 1999

Search For The Ebola Virus Reservoir In Kikwit, Democratic Republic Of The Congo: Reflections On A Vertebrate Collection, Herwig Leirs, James N. Mills, John W. Krebs, James E. Childs, Dudu Akaibe, Neal Woollen, George Ludwig, Clarence J. Peters, Thomas G. Ksiazek

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

A 3-month ecologic investigation was done to identify the reservoir of Ebola virus following the 1995 outbreak in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Efforts focused on the fields where the putative primary case had worked but included other habitats near Kikwit. Samples were collected from 3066 vertebrates and tested for the presence of antibodies to Ebola (subtype Zaire) virus: All tests were negative, and attempts to isolate Ebola virus were unsuccessful. The investigation was hampered by a lack of information beyond the daily activities of the primary case, a lack of information on Ebola virus ecology, which precluded the …

Oral Transmission And Early Lymphoid Tropism Of Chronic Wasting Disease PrpRes In Mule Deer Fawns (Odocoileus Hemionus), Christina J. Sigurdson, Elizabeth S. Williams, Michael W. Miller, Terry R. Spraker, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Edward A. Hoover Jan 1999

Oral Transmission And Early Lymphoid Tropism Of Chronic Wasting Disease PrpRes In Mule Deer Fawns (Odocoileus Hemionus), Christina J. Sigurdson, Elizabeth S. Williams, Michael W. Miller, Terry R. Spraker, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Edward A. Hoover

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Mule deer fawns (Odocoileus hemionus) were inoculated orally with a brain homogenate prepared from mule deer with naturally occurring chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion-induced transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Fawns were necropsied and examined for PrPres, the abnormal prion protein isoform, at 10, 42, 53, 77, 78 and 80 days post-inoculation (p.i.) using an immunohistochemistry assay modified to enhance sensitivity. PrPres was detected in alimentarytract- associated lymphoid tissues (one or more of the following: retropharyngeal lymph node, tonsil, Peyer’s patch and ileocaecal lymph node) as early as 42 days p.i. and in all fawns examined thereafter …

Prp Genotypes Of Captive And Free-Ranging Rocky Mountain Elk (Cervus Elaphus Nelsoni) With Chronic Wasting Disease, Katherine I. O'Rourke, T. E. Besser, M. W. Miller, T. F. Cline, T. R. Spraker, A. L. Jenny, M. A. Wild, G. L. Zebarth

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The PrP gene encodes the putative causative agent of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), a heterogeneous group of fatal, neurodegenerative disorders including human Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, ovine scrapie and chronic wasting disease (CWD) of North American deer and elk. Polymorphisms in the PrP gene are associated with variations in relative susceptibility, pathological lesion patterns, incubation times and clinical course of TSEs of humans, mice and sheep. Sequence analysis of the PrP gene from Rocky Mountain elk showed only one amino acid change (Met to Leu at cervid codon 132). Homozygosity for Met at the corresponding polymorphic site (Met …

Traditional And Applied Graduate Education: Special Challenges, William G. Powers, Don Love Jan 1999

Traditional And Applied Graduate Education: Special Challenges, William G. Powers, Don Love

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article addresses the difference in philosophy and instruction methods in communication graduate programs of the traditional and applied graduate education. Both the traditional and the applied programs are equal in intellectual challenges but with significant differences recognized and accounted for in faculty decision-making associated with course selection, content, and instructional strategy. Graduate programs that contain elements of both models are the more common in our field and face special challenges. In conclusion, administrators must establish and focus upon mutual respect for the commonalities held by the two approaches to graduate education and the support they have for each other, …

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger Jan 1999

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger

Open Access Master's Theses

The Cretan wild goat (Capra aegagrus cretensis Lydekker) or agrimi is the last existing sub-species of free ranging bezoar goat (C. a. aegagrus) in Europe. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Protection of this animal is very important to the people of Greece and Crete due to the agrimi' s historic cultural importance. To examine genetic variation within and among wild and domestic goats (C. hircus), 6 polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to compare the genetic structure of 5 …

Wood And Bark Anatomy Of Schisandraceae: Implications For Phylogeny, Habit, And Vessel Evolution, Sherwin Carlquist Jan 1999

Wood And Bark Anatomy Of Schisandraceae: Implications For Phylogeny, Habit, And Vessel Evolution, Sherwin Carlquist

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Qualitative and quantitative features are reported for mature wood and bark of two species of Kadsura and five species of Schisandra. Newly reported for the family are predominance of simple perforation plates (all species); presence of pit membrane remnants in vessels of first-formed secondary xylem; two to three series of pits per facet on tracheids; diffuse axial parenchyma (Kadsura); multiseri- ate rays more than three cells wide at the widest point (all species); ethereal oil cells in axial xylem; and certain details of comparative bark anatomy. Differences in wood anatomy between Illiciaceae and Schisandraceae are nearly all …

An Expanded Circumscription Of Bouteloua (Gramineae: Choridoideae): New Combinations And Names, J. Travis Columbus Jan 1999

An Expanded Circumscription Of Bouteloua (Gramineae: Choridoideae): New Combinations And Names, J. Travis Columbus

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Cladistic analysis of nuclear ribosomal and chloroplast DNA sequences has revealed that the New World grass genus Bouteloua (Chloridoideae) is not monophyletic. Indeed, some species of Bouteloua are more closely related to species in other genera than to congeners. The problem was dealt with by expanding the circumscription of Bouteloua to include species formerly positioned in the satellite genera Buchloe (1 species), Buchlomimus/em> (1), Cathestecum/em> (4), Cyclostachya/em> (1), Griffithsochloa (1), Opizia (2), Pentarrhaphis (3), Pringleochloa (1), and Soderstromia(1). Thirteen new combinations and names were necessary. As here circumscribed, Bouteloua is monophyletic and comprises 57 species.

The Temple In Time And Eternity, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks Jan 1999

The Temple In Time And Eternity, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Temple in Time and Eternity, edited by Donald W. Parry and Stephen D. Ricks, is the second volume in the series Temples Through The Ages. The importance of the temple to a religious community of the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean world can scarcely be exaggerated. The eleven articles in this volume are divided topically into three sections: “Temple in Ritual,” “Temples in the Israelite Tradition,” and “Temples in the Non-Israelite Tradition.”

The “Temple in Ritual” section features Hugh Nibley’s discussion on “Abraham’s Temple Drama,” which identifies elements of the creation drama that appear in the book of …

Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock Jan 1999

Finding Biblical Hebrew And Other Ancient Literary Forms In The Book Of Mormon, Hugh W. Pinnock

Maxwell Institute Publications

One important and fruitful area of Book of Mormon studies has focused on ancient Hebrew literary forms present in the text. After years of studying these fascinating forms, Hugh W. Pinnock offers his perspective on their beauty, function, and background. By design this book offers a basic working knowledge of only some of the ancient literary forms identified in the Book of Mormon. Together they represent a significant percentage of the types of ancient forms drawn upon by the Nephite prophets.

The author explains that knowledge of ancient Hebrew writing forms and Jewish poetry is incomplete even today, and much …
