Angola Shows Ottawa Achilles Heel, Joe Lokey Feb 1999

Angola Shows Ottawa Achilles Heel, Joe Lokey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Landmines are a bad thing. I know that. You know that. Everyone at Ottawa knew that. Even the Angolan Representative who signed the Mine Ban Treaty in Ottawa in December of 1997 knew that. But someone forgot to tell Dr. Jonas Savimbi. Whatever we may think of him, the head of Angola's UNITA (Union for Total Liberation of Angola) liberation group is not out of place in history along with many others intent on being King and overthrowing what they see as a repressive government. Landmines, it seems, are simply a tool in a deadly toolbox.

Cryptic Luminescence In The Cold-Water Fish Pathogen Vibrio Salmonicida, P. M. Fidopiastis, Henning Sørum, E. G. Ruby Feb 1999

Cryptic Luminescence In The Cold-Water Fish Pathogen Vibrio Salmonicida, P. M. Fidopiastis, Henning Sørum, E. G. Ruby

Biological Sciences

The recent discovery that the fish pathogen Vibrio salmonicida is closely related to the luminous bacteria Vibrio fischeri and Vibrio logei suggested that V. salmonicida might also be capable of bioluminescence. Interestingly, cells of V. salmonicida were found to produce light in culture, but only when exposed to either an aliphatic aldehyde and/or the major V. fischeri autoinducer N-(3-oxo-hexanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone, a transcriptional activator of the luminescence (lux) genes. An extract of spent medium of V. salmonicida that should contain any V. salmonicida acyl-homoserine lactone autoinducer, when added to V. fischeri cells, led to an induction of their …

The Effects Of Free Fatty Acids On Gluconeogenesis And Glycogenolysis In Normal Subjects, X Chen, N Iqbal, G Boden Feb 1999

The Effects Of Free Fatty Acids On Gluconeogenesis And Glycogenolysis In Normal Subjects, X Chen, N Iqbal, G Boden

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

We have quantitatively determined gluconeogenesis (GNG) from all precursors, using a novel method employing 2H20 to address the question of whether changes in plasma free fatty acids (FFA) affect GNG in healthy, nonobese subjects. In the first study (n = 6), plasma FFA were lowered at 16 to 20 hours with nicotinic acid (NA) and were then allowed to rise at 20 to 24 hours (FFA rebound after administration of NA). FFA decreased from 387 microM at 16 hours to 43 microM at 20 hours, and then rebounded to 1,823 microM at 24 hours. GNG decreased from 58.1% at 16 …

Genome-Wide Bioinformatic And Molecular Analysis Of Introns In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Marc Spingola, Leslie Grate, David Haussler, Manuel Ares

Biology Department Faculty Works

Introns have typically been discovered in an ad hoc fashion: introns are found as a gene is characterized for other reasons. As complete eukaryotic genome sequences become available, better methods for predicting RNA processing signals in raw sequence will be necessary in order to discover genes and predict their expression. Here we present a catalog of 228 yeast introns, arrived at through a combination of bioinformatic and molecular analysis. Introns annotated in the Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) were evaluated, questionable introns were removed after failing a test for splicing in vivo, and known introns absent from the SGD annotation were …

Land Development And Biotechnology At The Claremont Colleges, Paul Faulstich Feb 1999

Land Development And Biotechnology At The Claremont Colleges, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Founded on the Oxford model of a cluster of institutions, the Claremont Colleges has periodically established a new school. In the Spring of 1997, the Board of Fellows of the Claremont University Center charged with policy-making for the consortium-voted to establish a seventh college; the Keck Graduate Institute of applied life sciences. or bioengineering. Despite other landholdings, including a golf course and a non-operational gravel quarry, the Board of Fellows voted to site the New Venture on a portion-approximately eleven acres--of the Bernard Biological Field Station. (Pitzer's vote was cast against building on the Field Station.)

Exploring Cost Constraints On Stem Elongation In Plants Using Phenotypic Manipulation, Don Cipollini, Jack C. Schultz Feb 1999

Exploring Cost Constraints On Stem Elongation In Plants Using Phenotypic Manipulation, Don Cipollini, Jack C. Schultz

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Negative associations between individual life‐history traits of an organism are referred to as life‐history trade‐offs (Stearns 1992; Zera et al. 1998). The existence of costly trade‐offs is thought to have favored the evolution of phenotypic plasticity as a mechanism through which organisms can account for environmental heterogeneity while modulating costs and benefits incurred by fixed allocation to competing functions (Bradshaw 1965; Stearns 1992; Sultan 1995; Dudley and Schmitt 1996; Pigliucci 1996). In plants, the ability to modify stem elongation in response to environmental cues appears to be a classic form of adaptive phenotypic plasticity (Sultan 1995; Gedroc et al. 1996). …

Low Self-Control And Opportunity: Testing The General Theory Of Crime As An Explanation For Gender Differences In Delinquency, Teresa C. Lagrange, Robert A. Silverman Feb 1999

Low Self-Control And Opportunity: Testing The General Theory Of Crime As An Explanation For Gender Differences In Delinquency, Teresa C. Lagrange, Robert A. Silverman

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

This research tests Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime as an explanation for gender differences in the delinquency of approximately 2,000 Canadian secondary school students. Separate psychological factors, including a preference for risk seeking, impulsivity, temper, present oriented, and carelessness, are used as measures of self-control, and additional measures of the construct are taken from the frequency of self-reported smoking and drinking. Elements of delinquent opportunity are controlled for by including measures of parental/adult super-vision. These measures and their interactions are used to predict self-reported general delinquency, property offenses, violence, and drug offenses. Results provide partial support for the …

Non‐Redfield Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In The Arctic: Effects Of Ecosystem Structure And Dynamics, Kendra L. Daly, Douglas W. R. Wallace, Walker O. Smith Jr., Annelie Skoog, Rubén Lara, Michel Gosselin, Eva Falck, Patrick L. Yager

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The C:N ratio is a critical parameter used in both global ocean carbon models and field studies to understand carbon and nutrient cycling as well as to estimate exported carbon from the euphotic zone. The so‐called Redfield ratio (C:N = 6.6 by atoms) [Redfield et al., 1963] is widely used for such calculations. Here we present data from the NE Greenland continental shelf that show that most of the C:N ratios for particulate (autotrophic and heterotrophic) and dissolved pools and rates of transformation among them exceed Redfield proportions from June to August, owing to species composition, size, and …

Orbitally-Tuned Sr Isotope Chemostratigraphy For The Late Middle To Late Miocene, E. E. Martin, N. J. Shackleton, J. C. Zachos, Benjamin P. Flower Feb 1999

Orbitally-Tuned Sr Isotope Chemostratigraphy For The Late Middle To Late Miocene, E. E. Martin, N. J. Shackleton, J. C. Zachos, Benjamin P. Flower

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We present a Sr chemostratigraphic reference section for the late middle to late Miocene (14-5 Ma) from Ocean Drilling Program site 926 on the Ceara Rise. This site combines a precise, orbitally tuned timescale with a high sedimentation rate (15 m/m.y.), continuous deposition, and excellent biostratigraphic control. The Sr isotope curve is based on measurements of cleaned, planktonic foraminifera at 100-200 kyr sample intervals and it illustrates periods of rapid change in Sr-87/Sr-86 alternating with periods of little change. Chemostratigraphically-defined ages for these intervals can be determined within +/-0.8 m.y. and +/-1.6 m.y, respectively. There is excellent correlation with the …
