A Unitary Asean Patent Law In The Aftermath Of Trips, Christian H. Nguyen Mar 1999

A Unitary Asean Patent Law In The Aftermath Of Trips, Christian H. Nguyen

Washington International Law Journal

Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ("ASEAN") have come to recognize that rigorous protection for industrial and technological innovations is essential to the economic viability of the Southeast Asian region. This recognition has heightened since the inception of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights ("TRIPs"). TRIPs imposes minimum standards for patent protection upon signatories to the World Trade Organization, which includes most of the ASEAN member countries. Strict compliance with TRIPs standards can severely aggravate the administrative deficiencies in national patent systems, but such deficiencies can be considerably alleviated with the institution of a regional …

The State And Women In Modern Japan: Feminist Discourses In The Meiji And Taisho Eras, Barbara Molony Mar 1999

The State And Women In Modern Japan: Feminist Discourses In The Meiji And Taisho Eras, Barbara Molony

History

The relationship of women to the Japanese state has been the object of much discussion in Japanese studies in recent years. To be sure, there are as many ways to approach this topic as there are conceptions of ‘the state’ and of ’women.’ Both of these terms are embedded in complicated and historically contingent discourse fields, making it impossible to posit just one or two types of relationships linking the two categories, as they are not fixed. Some scholars look at women as the target of government policies;1 some examine women as agents of some part of the state;2 some …

Seagrass And Caulerpa Monitoring In Hillsborough Bay Tenth Annual Report, City Of Tampa Department Of Sanitary Sewers

Reports

This is the tenth annual report to FDER to satisfy the requirements set forth in specific condition #14 of FDER construction permit DO29-1845321B.

The City of Tampa, Bay Study Group (BSG), has monitored the effects of sewage pollution abatement in Hillsborough Bay since 1976. Within the last decade, water quality improvements and evidence of minor seagrass revegetation in Hillsborough Bay prompted the BSG to initiate a seagrass study to compliment other programs assessing the environmental status of Hillsborough Bay.

Course-Based Campus Environmental Research Projects, Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Amy Shachter, Wynn Calder Mar 1999

Course-Based Campus Environmental Research Projects, Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Amy Shachter, Wynn Calder

Biology

Campus administrators and faculty across the country are realizing the educational and economic value of "campus greening." Many administrators have established clear environmental campus policies in an effort to recognize the economic value of green institutional operations and to respond to the need for adopting sustainable practices. Faculty and students have contributed to the green movement by integrating the physical campus into the educational process. At many institutions, students have led efforts to implement environmentally friendly, and in some cases, economically sensible practices particularly in the areas of energy conservation and waste management. Faculty and students have worked together on …

Genotypes, Phenotypes, And Complex Human Behavior Including Scholarly Editing, Herman J. Saatkamp Jr. Mar 1999

Genotypes, Phenotypes, And Complex Human Behavior Including Scholarly Editing, Herman J. Saatkamp Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

For quite some time I have been puzzled by the role of genetics in explaining both human characteristics and behavior. This curiosity led to several odd occupations for a philosopher/ editor. With a biochemist, I team-teach an honors course in genetics, and recently I became a faculty member and administrator in a college of medicine as well as a professor of pediatrics in a hospital-clinic research institution. These are not positions usually open to editors or philosophers, and one might wonder how they came about.

Intellectually, George Santayana's naturalism is the springboard for my interest. Although he maintains that all …

An Evolutionary Subspecific Assessment Of Deciduphagus Henrici (Lycaenidae) Based On Its Utilization Of Ilex And Non-Ilex Hosts: Description Of A Third Ilex Associated Subspecies; Designation Of A Neotype And Type Locality For Deciduphagus Irus; With Appendix, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Deciduphagus henrici subsists as six subspecies which have evolved into two distinct larval host associated groups of three taxa each. Group one is composed of those taxa which utilize primarily Ilex (holly, various species) as their host. They inhabit the non-montane area of the southeastern United States and up the Atlantic coast to at least southern New Jersey. They are: D. h. margaretae (T. L. Deland, Volusia County, Florida) occupying east-coastal to south central Florida; D. h. viridissima (T. L. Nag’s Head, Dare County, North Carolina) occupying the upper Outer Banks area of North Carolina …

The Occurrence Of The Genus Maruina (Diptera: Psychodidae) In Texas, David E. Bowles Mar 1999

The Occurrence Of The Genus Maruina (Diptera: Psychodidae) In Texas, David E. Bowles

Insecta Mundi

I recently collected immature stages of the aquatic dipteran genus Maruina from a spring-run located in the Big Bend region of western Texas. The spring-run, Ojito Adentro, is located in the Bofecillos Canyon Drainage, Presidio County, Texas at N29° 29'27.7", W 104° 3' 45.6" (measured with a Garmin GPS40 global positioning system). I collected specimens from the wetted vertical surface of a large boulder in the stream channel. A thin film of water flowed over this boulder creating a madicolous habitat. The habitat was thoroughly described in Sites and Bowles (1995) and Bowles et al. (1999). No adults were collected.

Ross Harold Arnett, Jr., who originated and who frequently edited Insecta Mundi, died July 16, 1999 in Gainesville, after a long illness. He was 80. One of the most influential coleopterists of the last 50 years, he organized the Coleopterists Society and founded The Coleopterists Bulletin in 1947. He was the author of more than 200 scientific papers and books. His Beetles of the United States has been the standard identification guide for North American Coleoptera for nearly 40 years. He was involved in the preparation of a new edition of that work when he died. The first edition …

Nomenclatural And Systematic Changes In The Neotropical Caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera), Oliver S. Flint Jr, Ralph W. Holzenthal, Steven C. Harris Mar 1999

Nomenclatural And Systematic Changes In The Neotropical Caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera), Oliver S. Flint Jr, Ralph W. Holzenthal, Steven C. Harris

Insecta Mundi

Recent work on a catalog of the Neotropical caddisflies has resulted in the recognition of the need to make numerous lectotype designations, new names for homonyms, specific and generic synonymies, transfers of species between genera and genera between families, and placement of many long ignored names of Muller and others. Rationales are presented for all actions, many of which had been known for years as the result of examination of types, but no opportunity had arisen to publish them, others became apparent as a result of the cataloging. This opportunity is taken to present all of those known to us …

Cave-Dwelling Nesticidae (Araneae) In The Southeastern United States: New Distribution Records And Notes On Their Bionomics, Will Reeves

Insecta Mundi

The Nesticidae are a worldwide family of small, sedentary spiders frequently found in leaf litter, debris, houses, and caves. The genus Gaucelmus is found only in the Americas, primarily in the Neotropics. Nesticus, a Holarctic genus, is well represented in the Appalachian Mountains by obligate cave-dwelling species (Gertsch 1984). The genus Eidmannella is an American genus recently introduced by humans to Europe and Hawaii (Gertsch 1984). The natural history, including fecundity and prey types, of cave spiders are poorly documented. Here I report a range extension of Gaucelmus augustinus Keyserling and natural-history information for N. georgia Gertsch and N. …
