The Anchor, Volume 112.19: March 17, 1999, Hope College

The Anchor: 1999

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Semianalytic Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Algorithms For Chlorophyll A And Absorption With Bio-Optical Domains Based On Nitrate-Depletion Temperatures, Kendall L. Carder, F. R. Chen, Z. P. Lee, S. K. Hawes, D. Kamykowski Mar 1999

Semianalytic Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Algorithms For Chlorophyll A And Absorption With Bio-Optical Domains Based On Nitrate-Depletion Temperatures, Kendall L. Carder, F. R. Chen, Z. P. Lee, S. K. Hawes, D. Kamykowski

Marine Science Faculty Publications

This paper describes algorithms for retrieval of chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton and gelbstoff absorption coefficients for the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) or sensors with similar spectral channels. The algorithms are based on a semianalytical, bio-optical model of remote sensing reflectance, Rrs([lambda]). The Rrs([lambda]) model has two free variables, the absorption coefficient due to phytoplankton at 675 nn, a[Phi](675), and the absorption coefficient due to gelbstoff at 400 nm, ag(400). The Rrs model has several parameters that are fixed or can be specified based on the region and season of the …

Western Pacific Interannual Variability Associated With The El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, Chunzai Wang, Robert H. Weisberg, Jyotika I. Virmani Mar 1999

Western Pacific Interannual Variability Associated With The El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, Chunzai Wang, Robert H. Weisberg, Jyotika I. Virmani

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Observations of sea surface temperature (SST), sea level pressure (SLP), surface wind, and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) show that the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) displays western Pacific anomaly patterns in addition to eastern Pacific anomaly patterns. During the warm phase of ENSO, warm SST and low SLP anomalies in the equatorial eastern Pacific and low OLR anomalies in the equatorial central Pacific are accompanied by cold SST and high SLP anomalies in the off‐equatorial western Pacific and high OLR anomalies in the off‐equatorial far western Pacific. Also, while the zonal wind anomalies over the equatorial central Pacific are westerly, those …

Response Of The West Florida Shelf Circulation To Climatological Wind Stress Forcing, Huijun Yang, Robert H. Weisberg Mar 1999

Response Of The West Florida Shelf Circulation To Climatological Wind Stress Forcing, Huijun Yang, Robert H. Weisberg

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The response of the west Florida: continental shelf circulation to monthly mean climatological wind forcing is investigated by using the three-dimensional, primitive equation Princeton Ocean Model. Two basic seasonal patterns of circulation and sea surface elevation occur under a barotropic setting: A winter pattern from October to March and a summer pattern from April to September. An interesting finding in winter is an anticyclonic gyre over the northeastern (Florida Big Bend) region that merges with a northwestward flow from the south. The Big Bend Gyre is caused by a convergence of two separate flows: A nearshore along-shelf southeastward flow and …

The Boundaries Of The Silenced Hmr Domain In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David Donze, Christopher R. Adams, Jasper Rine, Rohinton T. Kamakaka Mar 1999

The Boundaries Of The Silenced Hmr Domain In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David Donze, Christopher R. Adams, Jasper Rine, Rohinton T. Kamakaka

Faculty Publications

The chromosomes of eukaryotes are organized into structurally and functionally discrete domains that provide a mechanism to compact the DNA as well as delineate independent units of gene activity. It is believed that insulator/boundary elements separate these domains. Here we report the identification and characterization of boundary elements that flank the transcriptionally repressed HMR locus in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Deletion of these boundary elements led to the spread of silenced chromatin, whereas the ectopic insertion of these elements between a silencer and a promoter blocked the repressive effects of the silencer on that promoter at HMR and at telomeres. …

Particle Fluxes During Austral Spring And Summer In The Southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, Vernon L. Asper, Walker O. Smith Jr. Mar 1999

Particle Fluxes During Austral Spring And Summer In The Southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, Vernon L. Asper, Walker O. Smith Jr.

Faculty Publications

The flux of particles from the euphotic zone through 200 m was investigated on the Ross Sea continental shelf during two cruises, the first in November-December 1994 and the second in December 1995 and January 1996. An assessment of surface layer phytoplankton biomass and productivity was made simultaneously. Particle flux was measured using floating sediment traps whose collection efficiency was assessed rigorously. Phytoplankton biomass and productivity increased rapidly in November-December, and biomass was maximal in mid-December. Thereafter productivity appeared to decline substantially. Biomass declined as well, but mot as rapidly as productivity. Vertical flux rates were low early in the …

An Estimate Of The Uptake Of Atmospheric Methyl Bromide By Agricultural Soils, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill, Robert W. Talbot, Joanne H. Shorter Mar 1999

An Estimate Of The Uptake Of Atmospheric Methyl Bromide By Agricultural Soils, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill, Robert W. Talbot, Joanne H. Shorter

Faculty Publications

Published estimates of removal of atmospheric methyl bromide (CH3Br) by agricultural soils are 2.7 Gg yr−1 (Gg = 109 g) [Shorter et al., 1995] and 65.8 Gg yr−1 [Serça et al., 1998]. The Serça et al. estimate, if correct, would suggest that the current value for total removal of atmospheric CH3Br by all sinks of 206 Gg yr−1 (based on Shorter et al., 1995) would be 30% too low. We have calculated a new rate of global agricultural soil uptake of atmospheric CH3Br from a larger sampling of cultivated soils collected from 40 sites located in the United States, Costa …

Monte Carlo Study Of The Capacitance Of The Double Layer In A Model Molten Salt, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Kwong-Yu Chan Mar 1999

Monte Carlo Study Of The Capacitance Of The Double Layer In A Model Molten Salt, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Kwong-Yu Chan

Faculty Publications

Monte Carlo simulations are reported for charged hard spheres at high density near a charged wall. This system is a simple model for a molten salt double layer. Unfortunately, the reduced temperatures that correspond to experiment are very small. This results in a large Boltzmann factor. As a result, we are unable to obtain meaningful results for such low values and report results only for moderately low values of the reduced temperature. Even so, our results should be a useful benchmark. Further, we are able to give a qualitative answer to an interesting question. We find that at low temperatures …

When Arsenic Is Safer In Your Cup Of Tea Than In Your Local Water Treatment Plant, Sue E. Umshler Mar 1999

When Arsenic Is Safer In Your Cup Of Tea Than In Your Local Water Treatment Plant, Sue E. Umshler

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

The arsenic drinking water standard has been an issue for over fifty years and a hot debate topic since 1977. The Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 require the Environmental Protection Agency to promulgate a proposed regulation by January 1, 2000 and a final National Primary Drinking Water Regulation by January 2, 2001. This paper examines the health benefit and cost issues for various Maximum Contaminant Levels of arsenic exposure and examines some of the social and environmental consequences of setting the standard too low. The author proposes three alternatives for the proposed rule and concludes that the present …
