Child Physical Abuse And Neglect, Jody E. Warner-Rogers, David J. Hansen, Debra B. Hecht Apr 1999

Child Physical Abuse And Neglect, Jody E. Warner-Rogers, David J. Hansen, Debra B. Hecht

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Children ideally develop and learn about their world from the safe and stimulating environment of their home. Therefore, it is quite disturbing when violence occurs within the supposedly protective domains of the home and the parent-child relationship, although such acts have been committed throughout history (Zigler & Hall, 1989). Even though acts of child maltreatment have a long history, the concept that society should be responsible for the protection of children, including identification, reporting, and treatment of both the victims and perpetrators of maltreatment, is a relatively recent development.

This chapter addresses the physical abuse and neglect of children by …

Applications Of Amorphous Track Models In Radiation Biology, Francis Cucinotta, Hooshang Nikjoo, Dudley A. Goodhead Apr 1999

Applications Of Amorphous Track Models In Radiation Biology, Francis Cucinotta, Hooshang Nikjoo, Dudley A. Goodhead

Robert Katz Publications

The average or amorphous track model uses the response of a system to gamma-rays and the radial distribution of dose about an ion’s path to describe survival and other cellular endpoints from proton, heavy ion, and neutron irradiation. This model has been used for over 30 years to successfully fit many radiobiology data sets. We review several extensions of this approach that address objections to the original model, and consider applications of interest in radiobiology and space radiation risk assessment. In the light of present views of important cellular targets, the role of target size as manifested through the relative …

Cell Cycle-Dependent Sequencing Of Cell Fate Decisions In Caenorhabditis Elegans Vulva Precursor Cells, Victor Ambros Apr 1999

Cell Cycle-Dependent Sequencing Of Cell Fate Decisions In Caenorhabditis Elegans Vulva Precursor Cells, Victor Ambros

Dartmouth Scholarship

In Caenorhabditis elegans, the fates of the six multipotent vulva precursor cells (VPCs) are specified by extracellular signals. One VPC expresses the primary (1°) fate in response to a Ras-mediated inductive signal from the gonad. The two VPCs flanking the 1° cell each express secondary (2°) fates in response to lin-12-mediated lateral signaling. The remaining three VPCs each adopt the non- vulval tertiary (3°) fate. Here I describe experiments examining how the selection of these vulval fates is affected by cell cycle arrest and cell cycle-restricted lin-12 activity. The results suggest that lin-12 participates in two

Univercity News (1999-04-05)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Defective Interleukin (Il)-18-Mediated Natural Killer And T Helper Cell Type 1 Responses In Il-1 Receptor-Associated Kinase (Irak)-Deficient Mice, Palanisamy Kanakaraj, Karen Ngo, Ying Wu, Ana Angulo, Peter Ghazal, Crafford A. Harris, John Siekierka, Per A. Peterson, Wai Ping Fung-Leung

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Interleukin (IL)-18 is functionally similar to IL-12 in mediating T helper cell type 1 (Th1) response and natural killer (NK) cell activity but is related to IL-1 in protein structure and signaling, including recruitment of IL-1 receptor-associated kinase (IRAK) to the receptor and activation of c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB. The role of IRAK in IL-18-induced responses was studied in IRAK-deficient mice. Significant defects in JNK induction and partial impairment in NF-κB activation were found in IRAK-deficient Th1 cells, resulting in a dramatic decrease in interferon (IFN)-γ mRNA expression. In vivo Th1 response to Propionibacterium aches and …

Action Of Retinoids On Embryonic And Early Postnatal Testis Development, Andrea S. Cupp, Jannette M. Dufour, Grace Kim, Michael K. Skinner, Kwan Hee Kim Apr 1999

Action Of Retinoids On Embryonic And Early Postnatal Testis Development, Andrea S. Cupp, Jannette M. Dufour, Grace Kim, Michael K. Skinner, Kwan Hee Kim

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The current study investigates the hypothesis that retinoids have a role in embryonic testis development. The action of retinoids on testis development and the expression of retinoic acid receptors (RARα, RARβ, RARγ) were examined. In embryonic day 13 (E13; plug date 5 E0) testis organ cultures an RAR-selective agonist and alltrans retinoic acid completely inhibited seminiferous cord formation. In contrast, an RARα-selective antagonist had no effect. RT-PCR demonstrated that RARα messenger RNA (mRNA) was expressed at all developmental time points evaluated, which included embryonic day 14 (E14) through postnatal day 30 (P30). Expression of RARβ mRNA was present at E15 …
