Interrelationships Of Pacific Herring, Clupea Pallasi, Populations And Their Relation To Large-Scale Environmental And Oceanographic Variables, Erik Hamilton Williams Apr 1999

Interrelationships Of Pacific Herring, Clupea Pallasi, Populations And Their Relation To Large-Scale Environmental And Oceanographic Variables, Erik Hamilton Williams

Fisheries

Recruitment estimates for Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, populations in the Bering Sea and Northeast Pacific Ocean are highly variable, difficult to forecast, and crucial for determining optimum harvest levels. Age-structured population models for annual stock assessments of the sac-roe fisheries rely on fishery and survey age composition data tuned to an auxiliary survey of total biomass. In Chapter 1, the first age-structured model for Norton Sound herring was developed similarly to existing models. Estimates of variability from age-structured stock assessment models for Pacific herring are often not calculated. In Chapter 2, a parametric bootstrap procedure using a fit of the …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In The Gulf Of Alaska Groundfish Community In Relation To The Environment, Franz Josef Mueter Apr 1999

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In The Gulf Of Alaska Groundfish Community In Relation To The Environment, Franz Josef Mueter

Fisheries

The GoA supports a rich demersal fish community dominated by gadids, pleuronectids, sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) and rockfishes (Sebastes spp.). This study describes the structure of the juvenile and adult groundfish communities of the Gulf of Alaska (GoA) in relation to their environment and along spatial and temporal gradients. Abundance data were obtained from trawl surveys of juvenile groundfishes in the nearshore areas of Kodiak Island (1991--1996), shrimp-trawl surveys in the same areas (1976--1995), and triennial bottom trawl surveys of adult groundfishes on the GoA shelf and upper slope (1984--1996). Species richness, species diversity, total abundance, and multivariate indices of species …

A Maritime Sense Of Place: Southeast Alaska Fishermen And Mainstream Nature Ideologies, Judith T. Brakel Apr 1999

A Maritime Sense Of Place: Southeast Alaska Fishermen And Mainstream Nature Ideologies, Judith T. Brakel

Anthropology

This thesis portrays Southeast Alaska fishermen's 'senses of place' on the sea, elicited through interviews. The distinctiveness of a fishing culture, and the demands and opportunities of the occupation and environment, result in a relationship to place different from the majority society. Themes discussed include being at home on the sea, the environment as a basis for occupational choice, territorial flexibility, preference for wild nature, and wild nature produces exploitatable surpluses. The variability of the environment affects patterns of learning, models of nature, and values in inter-personal interactions. Relationship to 'place' is found to be central to the culture, but …

Characterization And Optimization Of The Magnetron Directional Amplifier, Michael Craig Hatfield Apr 1999

Characterization And Optimization Of The Magnetron Directional Amplifier, Michael Craig Hatfield

Theses (Unassigned)

Many applications of microwave wireless power transmission (WPT) are dependent upon a high-powered electronically-steerable phased array composed of many radiating modules. The phase output from the high-gain amplifier in each module must be accurately controlled if the beam is to be properly steered. A highly reliable, rugged, and inexpensive design is essential for making WPT applications practical. A conventional microwave oven magnetron may be combined with a ferrite circulator and other external circuitry to create such a system. By converting it into a two-port amplifier, the magnetron is capable of delivering at least 30 dB of power gain while remaining …

Salmon Fish Traps In Alaska: An Economic History Perspective, Steve Colt Apr 1999

Salmon Fish Traps In Alaska: An Economic History Perspective, Steve Colt

ISER Reports

Salmon return faithfully to their stream of birth and can be efficiently caught by fixed gear. But since the introduction at the turn of the century of fish traps to the emerging Alaska commercial salmon fishery, most territorial residents fought for their abolition even while admitting to their technical efficiency. The new State of Alaska immediately banned traps in 1959. I estimate the economic rents generated by the Alaska salmon traps as they were actually deployed and find that they saved roughly $4 million (1967 dollars) per year, or about 12% of the ex-vessel value of the catch. I also …

Blood Organochlorines, Immune Function And Health Of Free-Ranging Northern Fur Seal Pups (Callorhinus Ursinus), Kimberlee Beth Beckmen Apr 1999

Blood Organochlorines, Immune Function And Health Of Free-Ranging Northern Fur Seal Pups (Callorhinus Ursinus), Kimberlee Beth Beckmen

Biological Sciences

This study examined organochlorine (OC) contaminant levels in blood and milk along with immune function and health of northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus) from St. George Island, Alaska. This portion of the Pribilof Islands breeding stock has undergone a long-term decline between 4 and 6% per year for unknown reasons. To examine the possible role of neonatal OC exposure on health, two cohorts of pups (69 total) and 33 matched periparturient dams were captured for blood and milk sample collection. From the second cohort of 49 neonates, 43 were re-sampled 29 to 51 days later. OCs were extracted from …

Foraging Ecology And Conservation Biology Of African Elephants: Ecological And Evolutionary Perspectives On Elephant-Woody Plant Interactions In African Landscapes, Joseph Paine Dudley Apr 1999

Foraging Ecology And Conservation Biology Of African Elephants: Ecological And Evolutionary Perspectives On Elephant-Woody Plant Interactions In African Landscapes, Joseph Paine Dudley

Biological Sciences

The available scientific evidence indicates that African forest elephants and bush elephants are ecologically and evolutionarily distinct taxa. The current practice of regarding these two taxa as ecotypes of a single species, Loxodonta africana (i.e., L. a. africana Blumenbach 1797, L. a. cyclotis Matschie 1900) appears unwarranted, and obscures issues of major significance to the conservation biology of African elephants. Under a proposed taxonomic revision, the African bush elephant retains the designation Loxodonta africana Blumenbach 1797 while the African forest elephant is recognized as Loxodonta cyclotis Noack 1906. The browsing of woody plants by African bush elephants is a major …

Predator-Prey Dynamics Between Mountain Lions And Mule Deer: Effects On Distribution, Population Regulation, Habitat Selection, And Prey Selection, Becky Miranda Pierce Apr 1999

Predator-Prey Dynamics Between Mountain Lions And Mule Deer: Effects On Distribution, Population Regulation, Habitat Selection, And Prey Selection, Becky Miranda Pierce

Biological Sciences

Mountain lions (Puma concolor) and mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus), which share a winter range in the Eastern Sierra Nevada in Round Valley, California, USA, were fitted with radio-telemetry collars and tracked to determine their movements and cause of mortality. The mountain lion population of Round Valley refers to a group of individuals that lived in close proximity to one another, essentially isolated from similar groups during the winter, and fed on the migratory herd of mule deer that overwinter in Round Valley. Mountain lions migrated seasonally with the deer population, and two distinct patterns for coping with variability in …

Mentoring As A Manifestation Of Generativity Among University Faculty, Jeffery L. Lucas Apr 1999

Mentoring As A Manifestation Of Generativity Among University Faculty, Jeffery L. Lucas

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study examined the relationship between both generative concern and behaviors and satisfaction with life among university professors who mentor and those who do not_ Generative concern is an attitude or personality tendency to want to help others. Generative behavior are helping acts that generative individuals provide to others. A total of 75 university faculty completed surveys which consisted of demographic questionnaire, the Loyola Generativity Scale (LGS). Generative Behavior Checklist-Revised (GBC-R). and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). Pearson correlations were conducted between generativity and satisfaction with life_ Mentors consistently scored higher on measures of generativity. As predicted, significant positive …
