To intervene effectively, social workers need to make sense of clients and their situations. A case theory approach to assessment provides a framework to formulate assessments that are clear and directly related to the real-world problems clients present. Explaining the problem situation, case theory forms the foundation for selection of intervention strategies and methods to achieve change. Building case theory requires practitioner abilities to form concepts, relate concepts into propositions, develop hypotheses, and organize these into a coherent whole. The Dna Sequence From A Cloned 15 Kilobase Fragment Of The Chlamydomonas Acidophila Mitochondrial Genome And Rna Transcript Production In Response To Cadmium, Scott A. Hoffman

Chlamydomonas acidophila is a unicellular green alga of the order Chlamydomonadales. Our research efforts were allied along two lines: (1) Characterization of the C. acidophila mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and (2) Elucidation of any molecular events responsible for C. acidophila's heavy metal tolerance. The mitochondrial genomes of the protists have been underrepresented in the sequence databases. Among the protists, the alga genera Chlamydomonas shows a reduced mtDNA content with a highly rearranged gene structure. It was decided to sequence C. acidophila's mtDNA to further elucidate the evolutionary paths among the Chlamydomonads and add to the protist sequence database. A 15 kb …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disorder of the endocrine system that affects virtually every system of the human body. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates there are over 16 million persons with diabetes in the United States alone. Hyperglycemia, which is sustained over a long period of time, can lead to heart disease, nephropathy, neuropathy, and blindness. To avoid hyperglycemia and its associated ramifications, several self-care activities and life-style changes are necessary.

Organic Farmers As Victims Of Lnjurious Practices By Biogenetic Corporations, Jennifer L. Kelley

The relationship between anticompetitive practices by large biotechnology corporations and their victimizing effects on organic farmers, with reference to genetically engineered and altered seeds in the United States market, is examined. The sample was derived from individuals associated with the organic farming industry. The total sample populace was taken from two cumulative lists of organic farmers, organic certification agencies, and organic food producers. One hundred individuals were mailed questionnaires. Of the fifty-four percent that returned the surveys, one hundred percent feel there are not sufficient regulations on genetic engineering nor have sufficient precautions been taken. Transplanting Broodstock Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica, Onto Reconstructed Oyster Reefs To Increase Spat Recruitment In The Piankatank River, Dawn Chentil Sherwood

Four oyster reefs were recreated from oyster shells to historical proportions in the Piankatank River from 1993-1995. In December 1997, two of the reconstructed reefs were supplemented with large broodstock oysters from Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds. Since total quantity as well as density ofbroodstock were believed to be limiting factors for recruitment in this river, adding stock was expected to raise spat recruitment. Methods included dive surveys on the reefs, and dredge and patent tong surveys on the natural oyster bars. The recruitment of spat to both reefs and bars was significantly higher in 1998 (p<0.001) than in the previous four years and a positive interaction (p<0.005) was seen between the reefs and the year 1998. Based on these dat~ stock enhancement in the Piankatank River successfully improved recruitment and suggest oyster restoration may be facilitated in other areas of the Chesapeake Bay by strategic enhancement of spawning stocks.

Attitudes Toward Higher Education And Acculturation Amongst Native American College Students, Darlene Marie Wilcox

This study was designed to investigate attitudes and acculturation levels at a tribal community college to see if they differ from those at a four year state institution. In this study, the NACSAS (Native American College Student Attitudes Scale), and the NPBI (Northern Plains Bicultural Inventory) were administered to Native American college students at both types of colleges.

Results show that there were significant differences between the schools on the subscale of the NPBI, in the “European American Cultural Identification” (EACI) category, and on the NACSAS, on the “Perceived Racism” category. There were more students classified in EACI subscale at …

A Comparison Between The Level Of Carbon Tetrachloride And Total Trihalomethane Levels In Drinking Water Of Selected Regions Of Greater Houston And The National Primary Drinking Water Standards, Angela Lannetta Curry

This study was carried out to measure carbon tetrachloride and total trihalomethane (TTHM) levels in Houston's drinking water and compare them to the National Primary Drinking Water Standards for total trihalomethanes. Samples were collected from the faucets of several homes in various geographic locations throughout the city. Total trihalomethanes analyzed were: bromoform, chloroform, dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane, in addition to volatile compounds. Compounds were identified using a Gas Chromatography/Electron Capture Detector (GC/ECD), and confirmed by use of a Gas ChromatographyiMass Spectrometer (GC/MS). The data from the GC/ECD showed that total trihalomethane levels were at, or below national standard levels for most of …

At the end of World War II, doctors trained in the western bio-medical tradition integrated music into their practice as a means of helping soldiers recover, both mentally and physically, from the atrocities experienced while overseas. For many, music was a solace, opening up the peaceful memories of home and family and pushing aside the war-torn landscapes. By establishing interpersonal relationships between the therapist and the patient, as well as patient-to-patient in group settings, music enabled feelings and emotions to flow freely. Stereotypies have many causes and contributing factors. Often overlooked is the importance of social and environmental factors such as weather, pen design, social interaction, feeds and feeding schedule, and early childhood experiences. These factors are overlooked in favor of more concrete and testable factors such as size of the animal, pen size, age, sex, and health. This research revealed the importance of social and environmental factors in interpreting the causes of stereotypy in one captive spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) at the St. Louis Zoo. Observational data collection was employed to attempt to gather data supporting the influence of these factors. …

The focus of this study was to identify the at risk students at a suburban high school based on the frequency of referrals to the office, and to determine why these students continue to misbehave. A list of students called down to the office was provided daily. Using the Call Down List, names of students who were referred to the office most frequently were compiled. A random sample of 23 students frequently on the list was used to develop a profile of the nature of the misbehavior, and the administrative action taken; patterns of attendance, lateness, and academic standing …

The Transformational Influence Of Narrative Enrichment, Maxine L. Lynch

This social constructionist study examined what occurred to 20 high school students exposed to the narrative genre of news story writing to try to add to the knowledge about the narrative mode of thought. This applied research project used various qualitative methods to interview, analyze and discuss the changes that occurred in these students who became narratively enriched from their participation in journalism workshops that were designed to help them learn how to write and publish news stories. The findings where that learning to write narrative news stories stimulated changes in the students' values and sense of self-determination. The study …

The paper illustrates the application of Pierre Bourdieu's oeuvre to a qualitative research project regarding organizational change. Considerable attention is given to the interaction of field delineation, capital stakes struggle, interests, and individual/class habitus at both a church and a medical college. It is posited that a focus on field analysis considers the sources of capital struggle in a given realm. This, in turn, grants a researcher a new way to analyze who participates in these struggles, what prized capital stimulates interest, and how action and prctices are subsequently engendered. Sex-Role In Heterosexual And Gay Males, David L. Slinkard

Theses

Sex-role traits of masculinity, femininity, and androgyny were analyzed to study the differences between heterosexual and homosexual males. The Bern Sex-Role Inventory was used to assess each group's sex-role traits. Demographic information was gathered to determine if the homogeneity of the two groups differed on age, ethnicity, education and sexual orientation. Sex-role traits were compared within the groups using independent samples two-tailed t test. The two groups were similar in distribution except for a difference on femininity. There was no significant difference between the groups on masculinity. Homosexual males were significantly different on femininity. Chi-square results for androgyny, masculinity, femininity …

Planning methods that involve collaboration are gaining popularity and currently being applied in a variety of resource management issues . Based on current planning theory, researchers have proposed a conceptual collaborative model for environmental planning and management . This thesis evaluates the usefulness of the model to describe the range of factors important for the establishment and operation of collaboration in environmental planning. This iterative model suggests that collaboration emerges from a series of antecedents and then proceeds sequentially through problem setting, direction setting, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation phases. This Note stresses the importance of making the Clean Water Act's antidegradation policy work in order to avoid a system of national waters of equally mediocre quality. The Nation's highest quality and most important waters are not receiving appropriate protection under the Act because the antidegradation policy contains vague definitions, the states fail to review water quality standards every three years and to entertain citizens' petitions, and the Environmental Protection Agency has not taken an active role in ensuring compliance with federal standards.
