An Historical Analysis Of Open Adoption In The United States, Molly Crosby Cave

Theses and Graduate Projects

Adoption has been a way of creating families for centuries. The trend toward more direct and communicative relationships between adoptees, birth parents and the adoptive parents is gaining favor in the adoption arena. The purpose of this analysis is to place an historical context on the evolution of open adoption and to analyze its strengths and weaknesses. The outcome of this research indicates that open adoption is a positive way to build families and create lasting relationships between the adoptee, birth parents and adoptive parents.

Implications Of Stomatal Interactions, Thomas Norman Buckley

Biology

Though stomatal apertures often vary randomly within a leaf, suggesting somata behave independently, recent evidence suggests stomata may interact. In the phenomenon of patchy stomatal conductance, stomatal behavior becomes coordinated at the intermediate scale of one or more areoles but discoordinated at larger scales. This has two general implications. First, it makes relationships between certain gas exchange properties highly scale dependent, affecting the interpretation of large-scale measurements in terms of small-scale properties and the upscaling of models based on small-scale mechanisms. The Roles Of Superoxide Dismutases Of A Plant-Beneficial Bacterium, Pseudomonas Putida, And A Phytopathogenic Bacterium, Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Syringae B728a, During Plant Colonization, Young Cheol Kim

Both Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas syringae produced manganese-superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and iron-superoxide dismutase (FeSOD). Genes sodB, encoding FeSOD, and sodA, encoding MnSOD, were cloned. The sodB genes were transcribed as monocistronic transcripts, expressed throughout growth phases when iron was available. The sodA genes were part of polycistronic operons, and transcripts of the operons were induced only in iron-deficient conditions. The effect of mutations in the SOD genes was observed during root colonization by Pseudomonas putida. The sodB and sodAsodB mutants were impaired in root colonization in mixed inoculations with wild-type. Growth of the sodB and sodAsodB mutants …

Roles Of Plasma Membrane Lipids In Syringomycin E Action In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Rungrach Wangspa

Biology

The bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae produces an antifungal secondary metabolite, syringomycin E. Yeast growth inhibition by this lipodepsipeptide involves sterol and sphingolipids of the plasma membrane. Using a sterol auxotroph of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, strain FY-14, it was shown that the predominant sterol in yeast, ergosterol, is not required for the mechanism of action of this metabolite. With ergosterol, cholesterol, β-sitosterol or stigmasterol as the bulk sterol, strain FY-14 was sensitive to syringomycin E with the last two conferring the highest degree of sensitivity. The type of growth-promoting sterol influenced cellular sensitivity to syringomycin E. Growth-promoting ergosterol afforded the …

In this thesis I examine why and how the focus on aesthetic expression and the avoidance of making certain types of value judgments have shaped the discipline of folklore. In the first chapter I look briefly at some of the major figures and themes in our history in order to ascertain how we arrived at the perspective from which we now work. In Chapter Two I explore and critically examine the limited examples of North American folklore scholarship that examines "dysfunctional" folklore. Reported prevalences of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) (Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus) in semen have ranged widely. This is possibly due to differences in assay sensitivity, geographic or population-based differences in the true presence of the virus in semen, and PCR contamination. This study assessed interlaboratory sensitivity and reproducibility in the analysis of blinded experimental panels, each consisting of 48 specimens and being composed of semen specimens from different healthy artificial-insemination donors (n = 30) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients (n= 7) plus positive (n = 4) and negative (n = 7) controls. Ecology Of The Malay Civet (Viverra Tangalunga) In A Logged And An Unlogged Forest In Sabah, East Malaysia, Christina P. Colon

Publications and Research

Malay civets in a dipterocarp rain forest were studied from December, 1995, through June, 1997, in the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve in Sabah, East Malaysia. To investigate the basic ecology of this species and explore the potential impact of selective logging, data on home range, activity and diet were collected on study animals in an unlogged and a selectively logged forest, and comparisons made.

Density in the unlogged forest was 1/0.46 km² , and 1/1.07 km² in the logged forest. Mean home range size based on a 95% minimum convex polygon was 110 ha. and did not differ …

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The study, uncovered Japanese Language Other Than English (LOTE) teachers' understandings of communicative language teaching (CLT). Using the idea of multiple data sources, the project relied on open ended interviews, classroom observations, and LOTE teacher survey responses. The data provided answers to two research questions: 1) What are LOTE teachers' beliefs and knowledge about (communicative) language teaching? and 2) How do LOTE teachers implement CLT in their classrooms. The multiple data sources provided information that both converged and diverged, providing insights not only into communicative language teaching, but also teachers' views of language teaching in general. Researchers and clinicians have postulated that the thin-ideal image portrayed in the media leads to body dissatisfaction and negative self-appraisals among women; however, there is little research that has directly examined the effects of these images on women. The purpose of this research investigation was to experimentally examine the effects of exposure to the thin-ideal on women's affect, self-esteem, body satisfaction, and level of internalization of the thin body image. This study also assessed how the thin-ideal image differentially impacted women with a diagnosed eating disorder. Questionnaires compromised of (a) a description of a child (either male or female) exhibiting attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviors (either predominately hyperactive/impulsive or predominately inattentive) and (b) 13 questions about the description were completed by 562 regular elementary education teachers in the state of Utah. The questions, which offered teachers a range of responses on a 5 point Likert scale, were designed to assess the extent to which the gender and behaviors of the child described affected the extent to which teachers were able to identify the child as being representative of a child with ADHD, teachers' attributional assumptions …

Influence Of Commercial Starter Media On Biochemical Characteristics Of Lactococcus Lactus, Norman Bart Devries

Five strains of Lactococcus lactis were inoculated individually into six commercial bulk set growth media, 11% non-fat dry milk (NDM), and Elliker's broth. After growth in each medium the strains were tested for rate of acid production, and activities of proteinase, aminopeptidase, and lipase/esterase. Growth in commercial starter media significantly influenced acid production rate (P = 0.040), aminopeptidase activity (P < 0.0001), and lipase/esterase activity (P < 0.0001) .

For selected strain/media combinations, the duration of induced aminopeptidase and lipase/esterase activity was followed. The chosen strains were grown in selected commercial bulk set media, reinoculated into 11% NDM, and enzyme activity was examined for five successive …
