Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) mutations are present in >70% of colon cancers. The APC protein binds to beta-catenin (beta-cat), a protein first identified because of its role in E-cadherin (E-cad) cell adhesion. In some colon cancers lacking APC defects, mutations in presumptive glycogen synthase kinase 3beta phosphorylation sites near the beta-cat NH2 terminus appear to render beta-cat resistant to regulation by APC and glycogen synthase kinase 3beta. In cells with APC or beta-cat defects, beta-cat is stabilized and, in turn, binds to and activates T-cell factor (Tcf)/lymphoid enhancer factor (Lef) transcription factors. The Experience And Meaning Of A Marianist Education Today: A National High School Study Of Mission And School Culture, Carolyn S. Ridenour, Alan Demmitt, Jill L. Lindsey-North

Journal of Catholic Education

Focus groups conducted with students, parents, teachers, and alumni (N=540) at 13 Catholic Marianist high schools provided rich insights into the experience and meaning of the education provided at these institutions. While academic excellence was a common thread woven across meaning given by both parents and teachers, students and alumni articulated a meaning replete with images of belonging. That these schools valued persons holistically (rather than solely academically) permeated most groups. Using theories of organizational culture as the foundation, the relationship between missions and the meaning of life in these schools is discussed.

Introduction: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a well-recognized clinical entity with a worldwide distribution. In the United States alone, 1.5 million cases of MI occur per year. This study compares the in-hospital mortality, 1 year mortality and time to death following a first Q-wave or non Q-wave myocardial infarction (MI).Methods: One thousand five hundred and ninety-six patients were admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital with a diagnosis of MI over a period of four years of whom 420 patients met our inclusion criteria. The Australian water dragon, Physignathus lesueurii (Gray 1831), is a large acrodontan lizard which occurs in eastern Australia and has been reported from western New Guinea (Fig. 1). The species appears to be absent from eastern New Guinea (Allison 1982).

Among the many bone growth factors, this study focused on the IGF and BMP systems because of some of their unique functions, namely, IGFs function both as local and systemic agents and BMPs are capable of inducing de novo bone formation at non-skeletal sites. In recent years gene therapy has become a promising way of alleviating incurable human ailments, its concept emerging as the ultimate therapy for many infectious and genetic diseases. Two important aspects of the development of successful gene therapy protocols are the ability to monitor gene transfer readily, and the establishment of new protocols for treating specific diseases. In this work, Renilla luciferase and human glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) 65 were engineered for secretion to address some aspects of these issues.

Groundwater vulnerability to contamination from surface sources was evaluated for Nottawa Creek Watershed, Calhoun County Michigan using AQUIPRO and DRASTIC vulnerability methods. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to analyze and map the data. Forty groundwater samples were collected following a statistical sampling protocol from private wells. Samples were analyzed for nitrate-N and atrazine. Atrazine was not detected (detection limit 0.1 ppb) in any of the samples. Five samples contained detectable nitrate-N (detection limit 0.05 mg/L). Maerl grounds consist mainly of unattached non-geniculate coralline algae, known as rhodoliths, and their algal debris. The recent discovery of such grounds around the Maltese Islands led to the present study of rhodolith-forming species. Gross morphology of the rhodoliths was highly variable so identifications were based on microscopic examination of fertile material. Investigations using optical and scanning electro microscopy confirmed that five main species of rhodolith-forming coralline algae were present: Lithophyllum racemus, Lithothamnion corallioides, Lithothamnion minervae, Mesophyllum alternans and Phymatolithon calcareum. Two other heavily calcified species, tentatively identified as Peyssonnelia rosa-marina and Neogoniolithon brassica-florida on the basis of gross morphology, …

Heavy metals are important contaminants in many environmental media. This work focuses on the improvement of current methods for water and sediment analysis for three metals, cadmium, chromium and lead. Batch ion exchange was used for water speciation and a microwave assisted sequential extraction scheme was developed for sediment characterization. The developed methods were applied to a group of environmental samples.

The exchangeable species of these metals in water were preconcentrated on ion exchange resins. These include the bioavailable free ions and weakly complexed ions. Metals sorbed on particles and strongly complexed ions, less bioavailable, were eliminated. The method was …

Microtrap is made by packing a narrow metal tubing with adsorbents. The advantage of a microtrap is that it can be heated and cooled in the order of seconds. It has been used previously as a concentration cum injection device for on-line gas chromatography and also monitoring non-methane organic carbon in air emissions. In this research breakthrough and desorption characteristics of the microtrap were studied. The study used an action research design in which two teachers participated in a planned interdisciplinary activity that involved 160 high school students.
