This spring proved an exciting season for several reasons. For warbler fans, it described a dream with lots of birds to look at and a rather incredible species count (for anywhere) of no fewer than 381 Many "eastern" warblers were found westward, especially at "islands" of habitat such as the Geneva Cemetery and similar spots just beyond the western edge of the original eastern woodland region, as well as the Panhandle. For rarity counters, spring included no fewer than 4 first state records: Glossy Ibis, Gray Flycatcher, Black-throated Gray Warbler, and Brambling. We make here a special note that the …

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

S. W. Woodhouse made observations on birds in Texas from 27 February to 29 June 1851. Most work was near San Antonio and along the road from that city to El Paso. His accomplishments include collection of type specimens of the Black-capped Vireo (Vireo atricapillus) and Cassin's Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii), as well as establishing new state records for several species. Woodhouse's published report of 153 species stated or implied lo occur in Texas represents the first and most comprehensive enumeration of the avifauna of the state.

Use Of Deer-Proof Fence Posts By Cavity Nesting Birds In South Texas, David R. Synatzske, Donald C. Ruthven Iii, Larry W. Brothers

Extensive brush control activities in the South Texas Plains have eliminated many suitable cavity nesting trees. Increased interest in whitetailed deer management has resulted in the construction of deer-proof fences, some with creosote-treated posts. Surveys revealed cavities in treated fence posts were readily used by species, such as Golden-fronted Woodpeckers and Tyrant Flycatchers, as nesting sites. Although creosote-treated fence posts are readily used by cavity nestcrs, further investigation into the toxicity of creosote is wan-anted.

We have designed a DNA cassette to transcribe defective interfering (DI) RNAs of tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) and have investigated their potential to protect transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana plants from tombusvirus infections. To produce RNAs with authentic 5’ and 3’ termini identical to those of the native B10 DI RNA, the DI RNA sequences were flanked by ribozymes (RzDI). When RzDI RNAs transcribed in vitro were mixed with parental TBSV transcripts and inoculated into protoplasts or plants, they became amplified, reduced the accumulation of the parental RNA, and mediated attenuation of the lethal syndrome characteristic of TBSV infections. Current Status Of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet And Tropical Parula In Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park And Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Southern Texas, Tim Brush

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

There are no published records of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet (Camptostoma imberbe) and Tropical Parula (Parilla pitiayumi) nesting in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas since the late 1940s. In this 1996- 1998 study, both species were confirmed nesting at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet was also confirmed at BentsenRio Grande Valley State Park. Most Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet nests were between clumps of ball-moss (Tillandsia recurvata) in cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) trees, and nests were active from 21 March-23 September. Only fe. males build nests or incubate. Two-three young fledged per successful nest, but three nests were abandoned after …

Faculty Publications

Phytochelatins (PCs), a family of heavy metal-inducible peptides important in the detoxification of heavy metals, have been identified in plants and some microorganisms, including Schizosaccharomyces pombe, but not in animals. PCs are synthesized enzymatically from glutathione (GSH) by PC synthase in the presence of heavy metal ions. In Arabidopsis, the CAD1 gene, identified by using Cd-sensitive, PC-deficient cad1 mutants, has been proposed to encode PC synthase. Using a positional cloning strategy, we have isolated the CAD1 gene. Database searches identified a homologous gene in S. pombe, and a mutant with a targeted deletion of this gene was also Cd sensitive …
