Includes 500,000 a/f/y from Bighorn River, priority of May 7, 1868; 300,000 a/f/y from Bighorn Lake storage but limited to half that amount during low periods. This study sought to gather data from key informants, who are professional staff members of agencies and community resources that serve homeless youths. Youth homelessness is on the rise and this study sought to gather the opinions. ideas, and recommendations of key informants that have or are working directly with this population to better understand their needs, in hopes to lessen or eliminate its growth in numbers around the Twin Cities area. Ninety surveys were sent to key informants and forty-six (51%) of the surveys were returned, which showed that there is great interest in and concern about the homeless …

The pre-Columbian mixed-growth form, composition, and structure of sagebrush steppes was mostly due to the highly variable semiarid climate and long fire-free intervals. The weak stability of this relatively complex vegetation was easily upset by excessive livestock grazing, especially in drought periods. After a few decades of uncontrolled livestock grazing, it was easy for introduced winter annuals, especially cheatgrass, to dominate the understory and alter the fire regime to larger, more frequent fires that occur earlier in the year. Accelerated soil erosion has caused many sites to lose the potential for management back toward native perennial dominance by controlling only …

Increases sales and use tax 1/10 (one-tenth) percent on July 1, 2001, to fund educational, cultural, outdoor, and gang prevention programs for pupils under age 21 in grades K-12, continuation or alternative schools. Educational programs receive 70 percent. Designated organizations granted funds to improve math and science learning. Competitive grants for programs operated by schools and nonprofit corporations. The high-performance liquid chromatographic enantioresolution of free and N- and/or C-protected derivatives of (R, S)-2',1':1,2;1',2':3,4-dinaphthcyclohepta-1,3-diene-6-aminomethyl-6 -carboxylic acid (β2-Bin) by direct and indirect methods is reported. The direct separation was carried out on native and different derivatized β -cyclodextrin-bonded phases. The indirect resolution was achieved by applying pre-column derivatization with 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide. The effects of different parameters such as the mobile phase composition and the structures of the compounds on the enantiomeric resolution are discussed.

We have characterized the nonspecific interactions in the initial attachment and film formation by marine bacteria at a dynamic fluid interface: seawater/dropping mercury electrode. Experimental evidence is presented that bacteria readily establish molecular contact with the metal substrate without mediation of a conditioning film. Prevalence of hydrophobic over electrostatic interactions and the possible importance of Ca²⁺ bridging could be inferred. The attachment of individual bacterial cells is faster than their transport from the aqueous medium, as is the case in the transport-controlled adsorption of biopolymers. The chondrocranium and visceral skeleton of Pseudis minuta tadpoles are described, based on a series of five larvae in stages 31 - 35 of Gosner (1960). Among their striking characters are the presence of peculiar articular surfaces between cornua trabeculae and suprarostral cartilage, the incomplete development of the orbital cartilage, the high fenestration of the floor of the cavum cranii, the fusion of posterior foramina, and the fusion of spicules 3 and 4 in the hyobranchial skeleton.

Methodology for the assignment of ¹³C CPMAS spectra is still in its infancy. Previous methods of CPMAS spectral editing have utilized differences in the strength of the ¹³C–¹H dipolar interaction or the rate and spin thermodynamics of crosspolarization from protons to carbon, to differentiate between quaternary, tertiary, and methylene carbons. We introduce a different approach, which is based on the fact that double-quantum coherence develops between the protons of a methylene group considerably faster than between most other proton spin pairs in an organic solid. Nephrogenesis in the mouse kidney begins at embryonic day 11 and ends approximately 10 days postpartum. During this period, new nephrons are continually being generated from a stem-cell population-the nephrogenic mesenchyme-in response to signals emanating from the tips of the branching ureter. Relatively little is known about the mechanism by which the nephrogenic mesenchyme cell population is maintained at the tips of the ureter in the presence of signals promoting tubulogenesis. Previous studies have shown that a loss of Bmp7 function leads to kidney defects that are a likely result of progressive loss of nephrogenic mesenchyme by apoptosis. The studies …

West Florida Shelf Response To Upwelling Favorable Wind Forcing: Kinematics, Zhenjiang Li, Robert H. Weisberg

The barotropic responses of the west Florida continental shelf to idealized upwelling favorable alongshore and offshore wind stresses are studied using the three-dimensional, time-dependent, primitive equation Princeton Ocean Model (POM). When forced with uniform winds, the shelf circulation evolves quickly to a quasi steady state. A southeastward alongshore wind lowers sea level along the coast and drives a southeastward coastal jet with a relatively weak northwestward return flow farther offshore. A southwestward offshore wind lowers sea level along the west Florida coast and raises sea level along the Panhandle coast. Two independent circulation gyres are set up in association with …

To assess black-white differences in disability and morbidity in the last years of life, the authors analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey from 1986 to 1994, with mortality follow-up through December 1995. A baseline household interview was conducted for 10,187 decedents aged 50 years and over within 2 years before death. Data collected included long- term limitation of activity, number of chronic conditions, number of bed days, doctor visits, and days of short hospital stay during the year preceding the interview. For both blacks and whites, educational attainment was inversely associated with disability/morbidity indices. Black decedents had greater …

The problem of data assimilation in the specification of open boundary conditions for limited area models is addressed in this paper. Optimization approaches are detailed, which are based on combining available data on an open boundary with the physics of the hydrodynamical model. In our case the physics is in terms of the flux of energy through the open boundary. These optimized boundary conditions, for both barotropic and baroclinic situations, interpreted physically as special Linearizations of the Bernoulli equation for each normal mode.
