Positions In The 30s Ribosomal Subunit Proximal To The 790 Loop As Determined By Phenanthroline Cleavage, Gregory W. Muth, Scott P. Hennelly, Walter E. Hill

Positioning rRNA within the ribosome remains a challenging problem. Such positioning is critical to understanding ribosome function, as various rRNA regions interact to form suitable binding sites for ligands, such as tRNA and mRNA. We have used phenanthroline, a chemical nuclease, as a proximity probe, to help elucidate the regions of rRNA that are near neighbors of the stem-loop structure centering at nt 790 in the 16S rRNA of the Escherichia coli 30S ribosomal subunit. Using phenanthroline covalently attached to a DNA oligomer complementary to nt 787-795, we found that nt 582-584, 693-694, 787-790, and 795-797 were cleaved robustly and …

Effects Of Fire On The Demography Of The Endangered, Geophytic Herb Silene Spaldingii (Caryophyllaceae), Peter Lesica

Understanding the effects of disturbances such as fire on plant demography helps elucidate the mechanisms that cause changes in community composition. I studied the effects of spring and fall fires on Silene spaldingii, an endangered perennial herb of grasslands in northwest Montana. Individual S. spaldingii plants were mapped, and size and flowering were recorded for 1 yr prior and 5 yr subsequent to the burn treatments. Enhanced seedling recruitment (70–410%) and a 22% increase in population size were the principal effects of fire on S. spaldingii, and fall burn plots had lower recruitment than spring burn plots. Background: Lesions in the avascular two-thirds of the meniscus do not heal well and are of concern clinically. Various growth factors promote the synthesis of matrix by meniscal cells and thus have the potential to augment healing. However, their clinical application is severely hindered by problems with delivery. An attractive approach to overcoming such problems is to transfer genes that encode the growth factors in question to the site of the injury. As a prelude to this, we evaluated methods for delivering genes to the meniscus.

Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study evaluates the construction and performance of KyDOH stream disturbance mitigation projects. The initial study tasks were to conduct a literature search, review of stream performance models, a review of Kentucky's and other agency's regulations pertaining to stream mitigation, identification of representative stream mitigation projects, and evaluation of those sites. Th results of this study will produce a tool for evaluating stream mitigation projects after they are constructed.

Mirroring a cultural shift that brought the American middle class from the Victorian era into the modern era, women's intercollegiate sports encountered stiff resistance from the two overlapping social groups. Mabel Lee, a woman physical educator, brought firmly held Victorian beliefs about feminine propriety and moderation to the University of Nebraska when she was hired as the head of the women's physical education department in 1924. Louise Pound, an English professor at the University, had for years excelled in highly competitive athletics as a member of the new modern middle class. Street-Based Female Adolescent Puerto Rican Sex Workers: Contextual Issues And Health Needs, Margarita Burgos, Donna L. Richter, Belinda Reininger, Ann L. Coker, Ruth Saunders, Margarita Alegria, Mildred Vera

Adolescent sex workers potentially have many health needs but are included rarely in health assessments; therefore, little is known about their needs or how to reach them. This study examines the motivations, social context, and health needs of street-based adolescent sex workers. The results show these youths are more likely to experience negative health outcomes, such as unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, when they are using drugs or are depressed. These findings suggest the need for comprehensive programming to include individual, interpersonal, and greater environmental interventions. Examples for reaching adolescent sex workers are discussed.
