Posttranscriptional Regulation Of Mammalian Methionine Synthase By B12, Sumedha Gulati, Lawrence C. Brody, Ruma V. Banerjee

Methionine synthase is one of two key enzymes involved in the removal of the metabolite, homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine levels constitute a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and for neural tube defects. In cell culture, the activity of methionine synthase is enhanced several-fold by supplementation with its cofactor, B₁₂. The mechanism of this regulation is unknown, although it has been ascribed to a shift from apoenzyme to holoenzyme. Using sensitive assay techniques as well as a combination of Northern and Western analyses, we demonstrate that the effect of B,, on induction of methionine synthase activity is paralleled by an …

Social policy researchers and policy rules and regulation writers have not taken advantage of advances in assessing ways in which social representations of ideas about people can convey alternative explanations of social life. During the past decade a growing number of scholars have considered how representational practices and the representations that are outcomes of such practices have value. Neglecting to consider representational practices has consequences including failure to mobilize and sustain alternative ideologies that reject narrow perspectives on families and communities. ...

Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species Mediate The Linkage Of Na+/K+-Atpase To Hypertrophy And Its Marker Genes In Cardiac Myocytes, Joseph I. Shapiro, Amir Askari, Zijian Xie, Peter Kometiani, Jie Li, Jiang Liu

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

We showed before that in cardiac myocytes partial inhibition of Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase by nontoxic concentrations of ouabain causes hypertrophy and transcriptional regulations of growth-related marker genes through multiple Ca²⁺-dependent signal pathways many of which involve Ras and p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinases. The aim of this work was to explore the roles of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in these ouabain-initiated pathways. Ouabain caused a rapid generation of ROS within the myocytes that was prevented by preexposure of cells to N-acetylcysteine (NAC) or vitamin E. Considerable advancements have been made in undersea imaging over the past decade enabling long-range detection and observation of underwater objects in clear and turbid (cloudy) water. The image transfer characteristics of the medium (i.e. scattering and absorption) have been primary obstacles in developing high performance systems. However, the application of lasers to the imaging formation process is currently providing a means for acquiring long-range images, over 5-6 attenuation lengths in comparison to 1 -2 attenuation lengths for more conventional methods. In addition, laser technology is now offering the promise of systems capable of forming range maps and depth resolved images. …

Winstein was the only student in a group of 11 official United States delegates to attend the first World Conference on Science (WCS) in Budapest, Hungary, from June 26 to July 1. The conference brought together 2,500 scientists from 150 countries.

The purpose of this thesis is to give insight into the role played by the African American midwife in the rural south, including Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. The African American midwife was responsible for prenatal care, delivery, and a certain degree of postnatal care for the mother and the infant. During slavery, she was all that the slaves had. The African American midwife also aided in delivery of some of the whites as well in a time when blacks were considered to be no more than animals. This study was developed to determine the effects of lead nitrate on marigold (Tagetes erecta) plants and to determine if these plants could phytoremediate or uptake lead nitrate from the soil. Phytoremediation is a low cost-effective means of reduction or removal of environmental contaminants by plants from the environment and is currently being investigated for many remediation applications. The objectives of this research were to: 1) determine the toxicity of lead nitrate on T. erecta by exposure of the plants to varying concentrations of lead nitrate (0.1-1000 ppm); 2) determine the effects of lead nitrate on the growth and development …
