Unique cytoplasmic filaments are found in the treponeme genus of spirochete bacteria. Their function is unknown, but their location underneath the periplasmic flagellar filaments (PFF) suggests a role in motility and/or cell structure. To better understand these unique structures, the gene coding for the cytoplasmic filaments, cfpA, was identified in various treponemal species. Treponema phagedenis cfpA was 2,037 nucleotides long, and the encoded polypeptide showed 78 to 100% amino acid sequence identity with the partial sequence of CfpA from T. denticola, T. vincentii, and T. pallidum subsp. pertenue. The 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandate that schools evaluate, through the process of a functional behavioral assessment, those students with disabilities who are exhibiting significant behavior problems which may lead to suspension and expulsion. We conducted a statewide survey of special education administrators and school psychologists to examine their views of the relative effectiveness, usability, suitability, and practicability of functional behavioral assessment procedures for two types of problem behaviors (i.e., low-level chronic or low frequency unique problem behaviors). Evolutionary relationships of the Eucestoda have received intense but sporadic attention over the past century. Since 1996, the landscape has dramatically changed with respect to our knowledge of the phylogenetic relationships among the tapeworms. The 2nd International Workshop for Tapeworm Systematics (IWTS) held in Lincoln, Nebraska in October of that year provided the catalyst for development of novel hypotheses for inter-and intra-ordinal phylogeny. The Columbia Slough is a tidally influenced freshwater system of wetlands, channels, and lakes located within the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. It is a eutrophic water body susceptible to algae blooms and crashes and periods of high pH which violate water quality standards. High nutrient loads from groundwater principally controls algae productivity. Past structural changes to the Columbia Slough have included filling of wetlands and lakes and the construction of levees, dikes, culverts and irrigation channels. These changes have altered the natural flow dynamics creating an environment more conducive to eutrophication. …

Doppler blood velocity waveform analysis is conducted to affect clinical diagnosis. Current analysis codes developed at RIT posses the capability to assess gross hemodynamic parameters such as heart rate, mean pulse velocity, peak systolic velocity and also the beat to beat variability of these parameters. These computer algorithms have, however, lacked the ability to determine hemodynamic indices such as the pulsatility and resistance index as well as the AB ratio. The Timberline Sparrow (Spizella taverneri), although originally described as a species, is currently classified as a subspecies of the more widespread Brewer's Sparrow (S. breweri). We investigated the taxonomic status and recent evolutionary history of these species by comparison of both morphological and molecular characters. Morphometric comparisons using 6 external and 18 skeletal measurements show that S. taverneri specimens from two widely separated populations (Yukon and southwestern Alberta, Canada) are indistinguishable with respect to size yet are significantly larger (by 3%) than representatives of several breweri populations. This project examined whether experiential avoidance differentiated alcohol-dependent relapsers from non-relapsers. Eighty-five subjects receiving inpatient addiction treatment were assessed for degree of experiential avoidance (using a new measure called the AAQ, coping style, alcohol severity, anxiety, and depression. It was hypothesized that the AAQ, along with avoidant coping and negative life events, would differentiate those who subsequently relapsed with those who did not. Three months after discharge, subjects were contacted for follow-up to determine whether or not they had relapsed, and to what degree they had experienced negative and/or positive life events. This thesis is a study of field data and remotely sensed data to evaluate the structural diversity, texture, spectral and spatial differences between forest stands of three age classes (50--69, 70--89, and >90 years) in the Cheat District on the Monongahela National Forest. The structural diversity was determined with foliage-height profiles for 48 stands ranging from 52 to 148 years old. Structural diversity was highest in the 70--89 and >90 year old stands and lowest in the 50--69 year old stands. The structural characteristics of the 70--89 and >90 year old stands were characterized by greater numbers of larger trees, …

The effects of gender and social support on cardiovascular reactivity to a speech task were examined in this study. Seventeen males and seventeen females performed a speech task, once in the presence of an experimenter with their significant other present offering encouragement and support and once in the presence of the experimenter alone. Both blood pressure (i.e., systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP)) and hemodynamic parameters (i.e., heart rate (HR), cardiac output (converted to cardiac index, CI), stroke volume (converted to stroke index, SI), and pre-ejection period (PEP)) were measured during the speech tasks. Our laboratory has previously reported that total nitric oxide (NO) production is decreased in CRD. Seven aliphatic and two aromatic alcohols were tested as reporters of the substrate selectivity of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). This series of alcohols was chosen to systematically probe the effect of carbon chain length, steric bulk, and inhibitor shape on the inhibition of AAP. Initially, however, the question of whether AAP is denatured in the presence of aliphatic alcohols was addressed. On the basis of circular dichroism (CD), electronic absorption, and fluorescence spectra, the secondary structure of AAP, with and without added aliphatic alcohols, was unchanged. Uric acid has been hypothesized as one of the most important antioxidants in limiting the accumulation of advanced glycolated endproducts in broiler breeder hens. This study was designed to quantitatively manipulate the plasma uric acid concentrations using hemin and allopurinol and determine its effect on skin pentosidine, shear force value of Pectoralis major muscle, plasma glucose, body and breast weight, and chemiluminescence induced oxidative stress in broiler chickens. Allopurinol decreased plasma uric acid, ranging from 26% to 74%, with the most pronounced effect at wk 22. Hemin increased plasma uric acid concentrations between 11 and 14%. This study documents effects of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on reproductive traits in a flock of Cobb X Cobb broiler breeder hens. The objective was to determine if the MHC affects reproduction of non-congenic broiler breeder hens. Genomic DNA was isolated from 35 hens. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was performed on each sample, using a chicken class II MHC probe (Xu et al. 1989). Restriction endonuclease digestion using PvuII resulted in polymorphisms in all birds. Five polymorphic bands were identified. The largest bands, 7.5 kb and 5.4 kb, were present in one and four hens respectively. The …

Influence Of Selection For Breast Muscle Mass On Ph And Metabolism Of Supracoracoideus Muscle From Male And Female Turkey, John Kenneth Yost

The objective of this study was to determine if selection for increased breast muscle mass has affected the supracoracoideus muscle's ability to regulate pH during physical activity in turkeys. The lightweight male line (LM) had the greatest breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight (p < 0.0001), a lower average pH (6.68; p < 0.0001), and greater Lactate Dehydrogenase (293 mmol NADH min-1mug-1 ; p < 0.0001) and Glyceraldehyde Phosphate Dehydrogenase (0.4452 mmol NADH min-1mug-1; p < 0.05) activities than the HM and FL lines. The LM line had the highest ratio (2.33:1) (p < 0.05) of adult to neonatal myosin. Hens had greater breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight than males (p < 0.0001), and a lower average pH (6.62; p < 0.05). This study showed that genetic selection for breast muscle mass resulted in an increased ratio of adult to neonatal myosin and an increased anaerobic capacity, which may predispose birds to a lower ultimate pH during physical activity.

The major focus of this study was to further investigate the area of sibling verbal aggression. In order to research this area, students at West Virginia University and their siblings were asked to complete a questionnaire about verbal aggression. The results showed that self-reports of verbal aggression were consistent with other reports. Results also showed that male same sexed siblings were more likely to display more verbal aggression than all other combinations. Results revealed that males self-reports of verbal aggression were higher than females. Results also indicated that males are reported by their siblings to be more verbally aggressive than …

This Thesis examines and shows the relationship between Sigmund Freud's Death Instinct and Life Instinct Theories and their relation to the Existential concepts of Being and Non- Being. These intertheoretical concepts were interpreted in order for practitioners of Psychotherapy to be better acquainted with both concepts; so they may be better used in the mental health professions. A discussion of the two concepts as seen in Existential Psychotherapy and Freudian Psychoanalytic thought was presented and expanded upon and the relationship between the two was explained.

The neurogenetic prototypic disease on which we chose to test our gene therapy strategy is Canavan disease (CD). CD is an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy associated with spongiform degeneration of the brain. At present the disease is uniformly fatal in affected probands. CD is characterized by mutations in the aspartoacylase (ASPA) gene, resulting in loss of enzyme activity. In this review, recent evidence is summarized on the etiology and possible treatments for CD.
