A survey of recreational fishers in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia was conducted in July 1996 to provide information required by fisheries managers. Catch rates, attitudinal, demographic and economic information from boat-based and shore-based fishers was collected by Fisheries Officers. Pink snapper (Pagrus auratus) was the primary species caught by boatbased recreational fishers in the region. Various species of whiting were the predominant catch from shore-based anglers. Most fishers interviewed (80%) supported the introduction of an upper limit on the amount of fish and fillets that a person could take away from the Gascoyne region for personal or family …

Anger And Alcohol Use: A Model Of Coping Styles, Alcohol Expectancies And The Experience And Expression Of Anger, Shauna Willard

The researcher investigated the relationship between anger experience and expression, coping styles, and expectancies regarding the effects of alcohol in a young male population. Anger experience and expression was measured using the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, coping styles were assessed using the Coping Response Inventory, alcohol expectancies were determined using the Alcohol Effects Questionnaire-2, and alcohol use was measured using the Alcohol Use Inventory. The results indicated that young males who abuse alcohol utilize less effective coping styles, such as cognitive avoidance. Alcohol abusing males also believe alcohol will increase their power and aggression. A linear regression demonstrated that males …

Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a prominent neurotransmitter found in both vertebrates and invertebrates. The action of GABA has been accepted to be inhibitory in nature, but recent evidence suggests it is both inhibitory and excitatory, depending upon time of day. The amount of GABA measured in the brain of the cockroach Leucophaea maderae was discovered to fluctuate in a circadian pattern similar to the pattern of electrical output measured from the optic nerve in L. maderae. Lack of a system for site specific genetic manipulation has severely hindered studies on the molecular biology of all Bartonella species. We report the first site-specific mutagenesis and complementation for a Bartonella species. A highly transformable strain of B. bacilliformis, termed JB584, was isolated and found to exhibit a significant increase in transformation efficiency with the broad-host-range plasmid pBBR1MCS-2, relative to wild-type strains. Restriction analyses of genomic preparations with the methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes ClaI and StuI suggest that strain JB584 possesses a dcm methylase mutation that contributes to its enhanced transformability. Breeding bird atlases providing distribution data at a regional scale are becoming increasingly common. To assess the ability of such data to develop bread-scale bird-habitat models, we used data from a breeding bird atlas and landscape variables obtained From a geographic information system (GIS) to study the distribution of seven woodpecker species in the Jura, France: the Black (Dryocopus martins), Green (Picus viridis). Grey-headed (P. canus), Great Spotted (Dendrocopos major), Middle Spotted (D. medius), and Lesser Spotted (D. minor) Woodpeckers, and the Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). Aggressive behavior is a serious problem in the United States and has been studied from a variety of perspectives. Psychologists in many different settings are frequently asked to assess the risk of future dangerous behavior by individuals. Due to their important role, research into the prediction of dangerousness has dramatically increased in the past ten years. However, to date, research has offered few reliable predictors that can be used in such assessments. This exploratory study was designed to examine whether homicidal fantasies can be used to reliably discriminate between violent and non-violent individuals. Temperature plays a vital role in life processes and crop production. Physical and chemical processes within plants are temperature dependent; these processes in turn control biological reactions in crop plants. Temperature also plays a significant role in some aspects of crop physiological cycles: the diffusion rate of gases and liquids changes with temperature; the solubility of substances is temperature dependent; rapid progress occurs as a result of temperature increases; and the equilibrium and stability of various systems and compounds (including enzymes) is a function of temperature.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Donors and recipients were asked to complete questionnaires regarding symptoms and risk factors for infection and to provide blood samples for laboratory analysis.

RESULTS: Among National Guard personnel who donated blood, 12 individuals were found to have a confirmed or probable case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever or ehrlichiosis. A total of 320 units (platelets or packed red cells) from 377 donors were transfused into 129 recipients. Although 10 recipients received units from National Guard personnel with confirmed or probable infection, none became ill.

CONCLUSION: Transfusion-transmitted illness did not occur. Despite the awareness of the risk …

We have prepared a bichromophoric crosslinked variant of GCN4-P1 for single-molecule fluorescence energy transfer experiments (GCN4-Pf). The folding and unfolding fluctuations of single GCN4-Pf molecules are measured in a two-channel confocal microscope with which donor and acceptor fluorescence trajectories are measured simultaneously. The energy transfer efficiency is thereby determined and its probability distributions as a function of added denaturant [urea] are calculated. The distributions indicate that single molecule GCN4-Pf is in dynamic folding equilibrium with the position of the equilibrium being altered by the concentration of urea.

Recent understanding and concern with wetland environments has resulted in an increase in restoration and creation projects aimed at replicating these ecosystems. The unique characteristics within wetland environments result in different controls on streams traversing these areas, yet little research has been conducted to determine whether the morphology of these streams differs from streams in non-wetland, alluvial environments. Wetland streams from three different physiographic regions of the U.S. are compared to four morphological models and 12 additional features cited as typical in non-wetland streams.
