Nutrient Balance On Nebraska Livestock Confinement Systems, Richard K. Koelsch, Gary Lesoing

Managing the environmental risk associated with livestock production is a significant challenge. Nitrogen and phosphorus are commonly implicated as the sources of ground and surface water quality problems associated with livestock production. The degree of imbalance between these nutrient inputs and the managed nutrient outputs for a livestock operation defines the magnitude of potential environmental risk and provides insight as to the underlying causes of these challenges. A nitrogen and phosphorus balance was constructed for 33 Nebraska confinement livestock operations. Twenty-five and 17 of these operations experienced significant nitrogen and phosphorus imbalances, respectively (50% more nutrient inputs than outputs). Nutrient …

Method Of Protecting Against Neuron Loss, Philip W. Landfield

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

The present invention pertains to a method of protecting against neuron loss in a subject by administering a compound that protects against neuron loss by acting through a vitamin D receptor. Some of these compounds may prevent or retard neuron loss by regulating intraneuronal and/or peripheral calcium and phosphate levels. Other compounds of the invention act through a vitamin D receptor to protect against neuron loss through mechanisms not involving calcium or phosphate regulation. A preferred compound is a biologically active form of vitamin D, a precursor, metabolite, or analog of vitamin D. A preferred form of vitamin D is …

Culturing a population of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for many generations under conditions to which it is not optimally adapted selects for fitter genetic variants. This simple experimental design provides a tractable model of adaptive evolution under natural selection. Beginning with a clonal, founding population, independently evolved strains were obtained from three independent cultures after continuous aerobic growth in glucose-limited chemostats for more than 250 generations. DNA microarrays were used to compare genome-wide patterns of gene expression in the evolved strains and the parental strain. Plant Architecture And Forage Selection By Moose, Edward Joseph Mallek

The effects of plant architecture on browse selection and the extent of use of Salix alaxensis and Salix plantifolia by moose foraging in winter in Interior Alaska were studied during 1997 and 1998. Three sampling techniques were employed to estimate forage availability and utilization. Sampling forage availability prior to use (in autumn) provided the best estimates of forage use in spring. In Salix plantifolia, selection of current annual growth (CAG) twigs was significantly related to basal diameter of CAG, diameter of nearest neighbor, distance to nearest neighbor, and number of leaders per cluster. VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Celastrina Idella (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae): A New Butterfly Species From The Atlantic Coastal Plain, David M. Wright, Harry Pavulaan

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

A new species of Polyommatinae, Celastrina idella, is described from the sandy Atlantic coastal plain of the eastern United States. It is presently known to occur from southern New Jersey through Georgia. Celastrina idella larvae have been recorded from four species of Ilex (holly). Celastrina idella is distinguished from sympatric C. ladon and C. neglecta by differences in larval host, flight period, pupal diapause, and adult size and wing characters. In the New Jersey pine barrens the butterfly is univoltine and flies in the spring between the flights of its sympatric congeners.

Assignment Of The Infrared Spectra Of The Methanol Trimer, Gregory S. Tschumper, Jason M. Gonzales, Henry F. Schaefer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Second-order Möller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and density functional theory (DFT) were employed to optimize two cyclic conformations of the methanol trimer, denoted "bowl" and "chair," as well as a third noncyclic, "open-chain" conformation. This is the first time all three methanol trimer conformations have been studied at the same level of theory. Harmonic vibrational frequencies confirm that all stationary points are minima on the intermolecular potential energy hypersurface. The chair is consistently predicted to be the most stable conformer. The bowl and open-chain conformers are only slightly less stable and lie within 3 kcal/mol. Wetlands: A Potentially Significant Source Of Atmospheric Methyl Bromide And Methyl Chloride, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill, Robert W. Talbot

Faculty Publications

Tropospheric methyl bromide (CH3Br) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) are significant sources of ozone (O3) destroying halogens to the stratosphere. Their O3 depletion potential (ODP) can be determined from atmospheric lifetimes and therefore their atmospheric budgets, both of which are out of balance with known sink terms larger than identified sources. We have discovered a new source of CH3Br and CH3Cl emissions to the atmosphere at two wetland sites in the Northeastern United States. We have reason to believe that these compounds are biologically produced in situ. Our measurements indicate that the global annual flux of CH3Br and CH3Cl from wetlands …

Theses and Graduate Projects

Traditional models of leadership have been associated with either masculine or feminine traits, as illustrated by the transactional and transformational styles, respectively. A new model of leadership has emerged that requires that both feminine and masculine traits be incorporated into a leader's style. The Augsburg Leadership Development Model supports this new style of leadership by maintaining a neutral gender role association.
