Objective. Although the prevalence of children with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) has increased, empirical data about the role and practices of occupational therapists have not been reported in the literature. This descriptive study investigated the practice of occupational therapists with children with PDD.

Method. A survey was mailed to 500 occupational therapists in the Sensory Integration Special Interest Section or School System Special Interest Section of the American Occupational Therapy Association in eastern and midwestern United States. The valid return rate was 58% (292 respondents). The survey used Likert scale items to measure frequency of performance problems observed in children …

The Dumping Of The New Carissa: An Analysis Of The Emergency Provisions Of The London Convention, Jill S. Murakami

The London Convention prohibits the dumping of hazardous materials into the ocean. This prohibition may, however, be suspended in emergencies. The bow of the M/V New Carissa ("New Carissa "), which contained approximately 135,000 gallons of oil, was dumped into the Pacific Ocean under the emergency provisions of the London Convention. An analysis of the dumping of the New Carissa illustrates the weaknesses of these provisions. As written, the provisions are ambiguous and open to varying interpretations. As a result, nations may use the emergency provisions as loopholes to dump substances that they would otherwise be prohibited from dumping, thereby …

Protandry has been known to promote outcrossing in many species of plants (Lloyd & Webb 1986, in Endress 1994), but in asynchronously flowering plants other mechanisms are needed to reinforce outcrossing (Endress 1994). This study investigates the flowering system of Columnea microcalyx (Gesneriaceae) to determine what mechanisms the plant may be using to promote outcrossing. Nectar production, floral characteristics, and the effects of pollination on nectar production were measured in 36 flowers of C. microcalyx. It was found that C. microcalyx flowers are protandrous; they open asynchronously on a plant and have delayed nectar production. It was also found that …

Nectar Preference And Predator Avoidance Of Hummingbirds, September 1999, Michael Steinbeiss

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

I studied feeding preferences of hummingbirds in the presence and absence of a simulated predator at feeders with varied nectar concentration. Using nectar concentration of 15% and 25% with and without predators, I counted visits over eleven sessions of one hour apiece. I found no significant patterns in number of visits (p= .379) or number of species visiting (p= 0.413) across all treatments. The hummingbirds showed no avoidance of the predator nor preference for nectar concentration. Although no statistically significant patterns were found, these findings are biologically relevant because they indicate possible behavioral responses to fragmentation and environmental disturbances.

Experimental results from the Interface Configuration Experiment (ICE) performed aboard the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station are reported. The experiment concerns fluid interfaces in certain ‘exotic’ containers in a low-gravity environment. These containers are rotationally symmetric and have the property that for given contact angle and liquid volume, a continuum of distinct rotationally symmetric equilibrium configurations can appear, all of which have the same mechanical energy. These symmetric equilibrium configurations are unstable, in that deformations that are not rotationally symmetric can be shown mathematically to yield configurations with lower energy. The red wolf, Canis rufus, is a highly endangered predator native to the eastern United States. Their original range is thought to have extended from as far west as Texas all the way to the east coast, and as far south as Florida and north to at least the Ohio River valley. Their decline is attributed to human encroachment causing loss of habitat, persecution of the species, and extensive hybridization with coyotes, Canis latrans, once their numbers began to diminish (Riley and McBride, 1972). The purpose of t his research is to determine if social context influences a child's decision to regulate their anger. The subjects used in this study were 20 first, third and sixth grade students totaling sixty children. The categories of social context are as follows: parent, peer and alone. The subjects completed a demographic survey, as well as an aggression questionnaire, designed by the researcher. The results confirmed previous research with regard to the influence social acceptance has over children's actions. This research indicates peers, as being the most influential category in determining a child's response to anger.

Objective: As blockade of CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) has been proposed as therapy for HIV-1, we examined whether the CCR5-Δ32/Δ32 homozygous genotype has phenotypic expressions other than those related to HIV-1.

Design: Study subjects were white homosexual men or men with hemophilia who were not infected with HIV-1. In this study, 15 CCR5-Δ32/Δ32 homozygotes were compared with 201 CCR5 wild-type (+/+) subjects for a wide range of clinical conditions and laboratory assay results ascertained during prospective cohort studies and routine clinical care. CCR5-Δ32 genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction, followed by single-stranded conformational polymorphism analysis.

Croton californicus Muell. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) is a subshrub suspected of being dimorphic with phase choices. Gender variation in C. californicus was studied in natural populations of southern California for three years (1994-96) to observe patterns of gender !ability. Some sites exhibited significantly male-biased sex ratios, and these sites often had the greatest number of monoecious morphs, cosexual plants with unisexual flowers. Gender variation was quantified for cosexual plants by calculating the Estimated Floral Gender (EFG) which varied from 1.00 (female) to 0.00 (male). Molecular variation within Ctenosaura hemilopha and among other Ctenosaura species are used to identify species boundaries, assess suitable systematic characters, identify evolutionary patterns within C. hemilopha mitochondrial DNA sequences and reconstruct species and area relationships among the various taxa. The molecular evolution of the C. hemilopha complex is analyzed using 1109 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA sequence from the cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase III genes. Samples come from 22 individuals representing each of the five allopatric populations.

Gap junctions play a crucial role in embryogenesis, especially of the heart where connexin43 is thought to be important for its formation as well as synchronized contraction. Several reports have shown that connexin43 protein is phosphorylated on serine residues in vitro and in vivo.

Studies performed in our laboratory have demonstrated that cell-to-cell communication in cells expressing connexin43 can be controlled rapidly and reversibly by microinjection of active protein kinases or phosphatases that target serine or threonine residues. This study addresses the use of scales and subscales from prehire MMPI’s to predict levels of aggression and stress among law enforcement professionals in the field (n=75). Multiple regression analysis revealed promising results in support of the MMPI’s predictive utility.

Two scales, Aggression (AGR) and Stress Vulnerability (SYS) were developed as outcome measures through a three step validation process: (a) theoretical-substantive, through a literature review and analysis of pilot data (n = 202); (b) internal-structural, statistical analysis on sample data and (c) criterion-external, through corelational analysis with externally derived departmental assessments of each officer. These experiments were designed to measure the degree of shared synaptic inputs coming to pairs of myotomal motoneurons during swimming activity in the isolated spinal cord of the lamprey. In addition, the experiments measured the decrease in the degree of shared synaptic inputs with the distance between the motoneurons to assess the segmental distribution of these shared inputs. Intracellular microelectrode recordings of membrane potential were made simultaneously on pairs of myotomal motoneurons during swimming activity induced with an excitatory amino acid. Reproduction by vegetative fragments of cloud forest plants was studied at Monteverde, Costa Rica. The relative frequency of reproduction via seeds and plant fragments was quantified on trail edges and in forest understories, along an elevational and east-west gradient encompassing the Continental Divide. The proportion of young plants that originated from fragments in the understory increased with elevation and on the east-facing slope. A similar trend was found along the trail edge, with the highest proportion of fragments at the Continental Divide. The effect of seed predation by acorn weevils on the acorns of Quercus insignis was assessed in the context of frequency of infestation and the extent of damage incurred by the larvae on individual acorns. The effect of such damage on early fruit abscission and germination potential of infested acorns was also examined in this study. Acorns were collected from five Q. insignis trees in the lower montane forest of the Cordillera de Tilarán in Costa Rica. Frequencies of infestation varied greatly among the five trees, from 3.3% to 75%. However, there was no evidence for early abscission of infested …

Fallen tree logs provide an ideal moist habitat for Arachnids in the Order Opiliones. This study compares pasture and forest logs to determine which of the two habitat types Opiliones prefer. Log size and degree of decomposition were examined to determine their effect on Opilion abundance and species richness. Logs in pasture and forest sites at Monteverde and Cañitas, Costa Rica were overturned and searched for Opiliones. Opiliones were found to be more abundant and species rich in the pasture than in the forest. However, forest logs have a higher index of diversity than pasture logs. A positive correlation was …

Mycorrhizal fungi are important in the survival and growth of most plants, tropical trees in particular. Yet little research has been done on the abundance of mycorrhizae throughout the life span of plants. I collected root samples from 15 seedlings, 15 saplings, and 15 adults of Cecropia polyphlebia in order to determine the variance in abundance of mycorrhizae among the three growth stages. Root samples were stained and scored for vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae by comparing the number of infected roots to non-infected roots. Limitation of nutrients can greatly reduce the success of plants. Such stresses can be caused by invasive species that can outcompete other plant species trying to establish themselves in the vicinity. This can lead to reduced species richness. This study investigates the relationship between Chusquea pohlii culm density and species richness around the clumps. Clump area, number of species within and immediately around each clump was recorded and analyzed by regressing culm density on species density around the clumps (p = < .0001, R^2 = .493). Results showed that increasing culm density reduced species richness in and around the clumps suggesting that C. pohlii may be an invasive species that reduces species richness in the forest. Observations also showed that certain hemiepiphytic and herbaceous species occurred more often than other species.
