proposal that linguistic sounds such as phonemes, features, syllables, or tones can be meaningful, or sound-symbolic, contradicts the principles of arbitrariness and double articulation that are axiomatic to structural linguistics. Nevertheless, a considerable body of research that supports principles of sound symbolism has accumulated. This review discusses the most widely attested forms of sound symbolism and the research programs linked to sound symbolism that have influenced linguists and anthropologists most. Numerous reports of magnitude sound symbolism in the form of experimental studies and comparative surveys have been integrated into a biologically based theory of its motivation. Magnitude sound symbolism also …

I Was A Teenage Necrophiliac: A Screenplay, Walter Howard Jan 1999

I Was A Teenage Necrophiliac: A Screenplay, Walter Howard

Masters Theses

The critical essay that introduces this thesis pays homage to three people in the movie business who have most influenced my original screenplay, I Was a Teenage Necrophiliac. Also included is a section that briefly explains the impetus for this project, and a closing argument that examines the intentional use of cliche as a creative tool.

The zany style of writer/director John Waters is the first major creative influence described. Although my story is not as graphically extreme as some of Waters' earlier work (it would be easy to make a comedy about necrophilia a vile exploitation film), it does …

The Evaluation Of Elongated Styloid Process In Panoramic Radiographs In Edentulous Patients, Memduha Gülhal Bozkir, Hasan Boğa, Fahri̇ Dere

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It has been estimated that between 2% to 28% of the general adult population has radiographic evidence of elongated styloid process. In adults, the mean radiographic lenght of the styloid process is 20 to 30 mm and its tip is located between the external and internal carotid arteries, just lateral to the tonsillar fossa. Eagle's syndrome occurs when an elongated styloid process or ossified stylohyoid ligament causes recurrent throat pain or foreign body sensation, dysphagia, or facial pain. It may develop inflammatory changes or impinge on the adjacent arteries or sensory nerve endings, leading to the symptoms described. To study …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Regional odontodisplasia is a developmental anomaly of dental tissues with characteristic clinical, radiographic and histologic appearances. It most commonly affects the maxillary anterior teeth of both the primary and permanent dentition, and occurs in females twice as often as in males. The pathogenesis is unknown. A case of a twelve- year old female with regional odontodisplasia is presented. Although the affected teeth displayed the radiographical and clinical features of odontodisplasia, the patient appeared with significant soft tissue swelling on the anterior region of the mandible.

Managed Health Care In Prisons As Cruel And Unusual Punishment, Ira P. Robbins Dec 1998

Managed Health Care In Prisons As Cruel And Unusual Punishment, Ira P. Robbins

Ira P. Robbins

INTRODUCTION:

Billy Roberts, a prisoner in an Alabama state prison, had a history of severe psychiatric disorders. He was often put on suicide watch, and received large doses of psychotropic drugs. A managed health care company, Correctional Medical Services (CMS), was responsible for the health care at the prison. After Roberts had a suicidal episode, CMS's statewide mental health care director reportedly put Roberts in an isolation cell rather than a psychiatric care unit. The mental health care director also ordered that Roberts' medication be discontinued pursuant to an alleged policy of CMS to get as many prisoners off psycho- …
