Urban Problems And The City Of San Jose’S University Neighborhoods Urban Revitalization Plan, Vincent Edward Cantore
Urban Problems And The City Of San Jose’S University Neighborhoods Urban Revitalization Plan, Vincent Edward Cantore
Master's Projects
Over the course of the last 30 years, despite the apparent lack of a coherent national urban policy, and the unfortunate unwillingness of residents to assess themselves the taxes necessary to sustain an acceptable level of neighborhood service, the city of San Jose has arguably never seen brighter moments in its approximate 200 year history than those which it is currently experiencing. In former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer’s final state of the city speech she takes great pride in touting the strength of San Jose’s economy as well as the ancillary benefits of being the “Capital of Silicon Valley”. …

Taking The Time To Ask: An Assessment Of Home Economics Agents' Resource And Training Needs, Anne Murphy, Gayle Coleman, Pat Hammerschmidt, Kathy Majewski
Journal of Extension
Michigan State University Extension food, nutrition and health campus-based staff members conducted a needs assessment of county home economics agents to obtain information to drive decision making for programs, resources and training and to build rapport with county agents. The methods used to collect this crucial information were personal telephone interviews with 62 county agents and a follow-up printed questionnaire. Findings supplied a wealth of information for campus staff members to use to establish priorities about program planning and support, select or develop materials or other resources, and plan and implement training appropriate and helpful to county staff.

Low-Income Fathers’ And Mothers’ Perceptions Of The Father Role: A Qualitative Study In Four Early Head Start Communities, Jean Ann Summers, Helen Raikes, James Butler, Paul Spicer, Barbara Pan, Sarah Shaw, Mark Langager, Carol Mcallister, Monique K. Johnson
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
A qualitative inquiry in four Early Head Start Research sites explored the question of how low-income mothers and fathers view the role of fathers in their families. Role perceptions were gathered from a total of 56 parents of infants and toddlers across the four sites, using multiple data collection methods that included focus groups, open-ended interviews, and one case study. The data were analyzed to identify common themes across sites. The participants identified roles that included: providing financial support, “being there,” care giving, outings and play, teaching and discipline, providing love, and protection. Implications of these qualitative findings are discussed …

Union Park Action For Safe Families, Millie Ferrer, Janet Chambers
Union Park Action For Safe Families, Millie Ferrer, Janet Chambers
Journal of Extension
Union Park Action for Safe Families is a community growth initiative composed of neighborhood school and community leaders, parents, and various agencies. Its mission is to support the stability of families and safety to unsupervised children. Collaborative efforts among various agencies are providing educational programs and services that are family focused and neighborhood based. After two years, there was a 64% increase in youth participating in supervised collaborative programs. Also, the 230 4th and 5th graders receiving self-care education in three elementary schools had a 25% increase in knowledge of personal safety as measured by a pre- and post-test. Seventy-one …
Building An Asset-Based Program For 4-H, Daniel F. Perkins, Judith R. Butterfield
Building An Asset-Based Program For 4-H, Daniel F. Perkins, Judith R. Butterfield
Journal of Extension
The aim of this study is two-fold: (a) to identify strong and weak assets of youth in Duval County 4-H; and (b) to design an asset-based programming focus. The data for this study were collected through a survey administered to 151 4-H'ers from eleven 4-H clubs in Duval County. Using the Search Institute's Attitudes and Behaviors survey, baseline information about assets was analyzed to provide direction for programming. Implications from this study are discussed in terms of creating positive youth development programs that focus on increasing the assets of young people.
Increasing The 4-H Participation Of Youth From High-Risk Environments, Beverly B. Hobbs
Increasing The 4-H Participation Of Youth From High-Risk Environments, Beverly B. Hobbs
Journal of Extension
A study was conducted to learn how 4-H agents might facilitate the participation of youth from high risk environments in the 4-H program. Eight family service consultants serving three rural Oregon counties were interviewed to learn of their experiences in trying to successfully involve high-risk youth in community-based youth organizations. This article identifies some of the barriers to participation encountered by high-risk youth and also identifies some of the actions 4-H agents might take both within the 4-H program and more generally within the community to foster the successful participation of these youth.
The Impact Of Early Screening On Preschool Children Attending Camden City Head Start, Beverly M. Clement
The Impact Of Early Screening On Preschool Children Attending Camden City Head Start, Beverly M. Clement
Theses and Dissertations
Extensive published research supports comprehensive preschool programs for children and their families, especially for "At Risk" populations often found within inner cities. Programs such as Head Start prepare children for school entrance, provide them with a caring and nurturing environment and empower families with the skills and resources necessary for successful living. The Camden County Council On Economic Opportunity (CCCOEO, Inc.), grantee for the Camden County, New Jersey Head Start Program, provides comprehensive services for "At Risk" preschool children, ages three to five.
Starting in September 1998 to March 1999, sixty-seven preschoolers attending various CCCOEO Head Start Centers were given …
Facing The Consequences: Identifying The Limitations Of How We Categorize People In Research And Policy, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn Steele
Facing The Consequences: Identifying The Limitations Of How We Categorize People In Research And Policy, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn Steele
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Social policy researchers and policy rules and regulation writers have not taken advantage of advances in assessing ways in which social representations of ideas about people can convey alternative explanations of social life. During the past decade a growing number of scholars have considered how representational practices and the representations that are outcomes of such practices have value. Neglecting to consider representational practices has consequences including failure to mobilize and sustain alternative ideologies that reject narrow perspectives on families and communities. ...

FOCUS on Boise State
The danger, the excitement, the sheer rebellion of it all. In this issue, FOCUS examines the outdoor adventure sports revolution that is booming in Boise and across the nation. As the Treasure Valley becomes more urbanized, it may become more important to find ways to escape. Our fast-paced, technology-driven lifestyles also may push us to seek recreation that is highly stimulating. And some pursuits may appear less intimidating as they become more popular; encouraging even more of us to give them a try. On the cover; rock climber Tracy Goff scales a cliff overlooking the Boise River near Diversion Dam. …

Youth Teaching Youth Survey, Angela Hauer
Youth Teaching Youth Survey, Angela Hauer
Evaluation/Reflection
The Youth Teaching Youth workgroup surveyed Minnesota's 87 counties in February and March of 1999 (Appendix A). 68 of the 87 counties responded, 78%. Of those that responded, 44% (30) currently have 'Youth Teaching Youth' programming and 56% (38) do not. Of those that responded to the survey as currently not having 'Youth Teaching Youth' programming, 35% said that it has occurred in their county in the past. In previous years Alcohol Decisions had been done in ten counties, Project 4 Teens had been done in six counties, and Talking with TJ and Self Kare for Kids have both been …
