The Use Of Service Learning To Promote Understanding Of Gang-Related Issues Faced By Adolescents, Patrice Paul, Kathy Sexton-Radek, Janina Adickas, Bridget Fousek

School K-12

Service learning provides an opportunity for college students to experience classroom curriculum in a real-life setting. In addition, service learning provides the community with services otherwise not available. Such a program has been designed to assist with reduction of violence in the schools while simultaneously allowing college students to experience, hands-on, the people and issues they are studying. In this program, students in an adolescent development course were trained in a six-week group intervention aimed at building skills for positive communication, resolving differences, and preventing violence. A specific protocol involving skill-building exercises, role-plays, discussion. and at-home assignments was followed. Specific …

Review Of Gendered Justice In The American West: Women Prisoners In Men's Penitentiaries By Anne M. Butler, Sharon E. Wood Jan 1999

Review Of Gendered Justice In The American West: Women Prisoners In Men's Penitentiaries By Anne M. Butler, Sharon E. Wood

History Faculty Publications

Butler writes with conviction, her passion for her subject occasionally leading her to press her point further than the evidence will go. Several times she seems to claim that women prisoners were representative of all women confronting the criminal justice system, writing, for example, "when a child died from a mother's assault, conviction was a certainty." But this claim can only be tested by examining local police and court records to see if all women accused were convicted (they weren't). Women in penitentiaries were not representative; they were the absolute losers in a system that was, admittedly, stacked against them. …

Apartheid As A Crime Against Humanity: A Submission To The South African Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Ronald Slye

Faculty Articles

This submission made to the TRC by the Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Law Clinic, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, and twenty-one international law professors regarding apartheid as a crime against humanity (reproduced below) grew out of the debate within South Africa concerning apartheid, crimes against humanity, genocide, and Nazism. This submission is an authoritative statement by experts in international law concerning the legal status of apartheid and was drafted in part to clarify the relevant issues for a legal evaluation of apartheid-not only within the TRC, but also in broader South African and international society. Gideon's Muted Trumpet, Victoria Nourse

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Once the darling of the legal academy, criminal procedure has fallen into disrepute. Thirty-five years ago, when Gideon was decided, criminal procedure was the flagship of constitutional law, criminal defense attorneys were heroes, and courts and lawyers were perceived as themselves agents of social justice. Today, there are still heroes. But the conventional wisdom, within the academy and the country at large, no longer associates criminal law or procedure with heroism. Indeed, in some quarters, criminal procedure has become the enemy. Increasingly, scholars urge revisionism, popular pundits brand procedural innovations as a loss of "common sense," and philosophers warn that …
