The Impact Of Neighborhoods, Schools, And Malls On The Spatial Distribution Of Property Damage, Teresa C. Lagrange Nov 1999

The Impact Of Neighborhoods, Schools, And Malls On The Spatial Distribution Of Property Damage, Teresa C. Lagrange

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Using data obtained from three different sources, principles derived from routine activities theory are used to predict the distribution of minor property crimes in a medium-sized Canadian city during a 1-year period. Mischief and vandalism incidents recorded by the local police, transit department, and department of parks and recreation are aggregated by census enumeration area using mapping software, and analyzed in relation to three sets of predictors: (1) neighborhood demographic characteristics; (2) the proximity of shopping malls; and (3) the proximity of public and Catholic senior and junior high schools. Similar patterns observed for the three types of damage …

Grappling, Theodore R. Sizer, Nancy Faust Sizer

Special Topics, General

"Moral" or "character" education is neither a discrete curriculum added as an afterthought nor an unreflective activity, such as "community service, " that has never been probed for its meaning. Truly moral education, the authors maintain, is an intellectual undertaking that must infuse the entire school.

Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod Nov 1999

Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

The American justice system is in the midst of an effort to evaluate and reform its handling of the criminal victimization of children and youth. Juveniles are unusually vulnerable to crime victimization (Hashima and Finkelhor, 1999), but concerns have been raised about the effectiveness and sensitivity of the justice system’s response to these crimes. The findings presented in this Bulletin indicate that a majority of victimizations of juveniles ages 12 to 17 are not being reported to police or other authorities. Even serious victimizations involving weapons and injury are significantly less likely to be reported when they happen to juveniles …

The Relationship Between Cynicism And Dispositional Attributions: Examining Individual Differences Of Police Officers, Jennifer L. Weimer Nov 1999

The Relationship Between Cynicism And Dispositional Attributions: Examining Individual Differences Of Police Officers, Jennifer L. Weimer

Student Work

Previous research has shown that veteran police officers are more cynical than less experienced police officers. Research has also shown that veterans are more likely than less experienced officers to make dispositional attributions for the actions of suspects in interpersonal disputes. This study examined these two premises and the relationship between cynicism and attributions. Participants included 127 police officers and 70 undergraduate students who completed a cynicism scale and were then asked to read two scenarios depicting interpersonal disputes. Participants answered several questions pertaining to their attributions of responsibility and their perceptions of credibility of the suspect and the victim …

Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson Nov 1999

Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson

Service Learning, General

A popular topic of conversation lately among parents, educators, policymakers, students and the media is the isolation of young people from their communities. Many people feel schools have a responsibility to build bridges among diverse populations of children and youth, provide nonviolent problem-solving experiences and promote positive activities for young people, even during after-school hours. Involving young people in community service is seen as one potential solution. Indeed, some citizens and educators would like to ensure that all students — including those least likely to participate voluntarily but most likely to benefit from the experience — have the opportunity to …

Winning The Battle, Losing The War?: Judicial Scrutiny Of Prisoners' Statutory Claims Under The Americans With Disabilities Act, Christopher J. Burke Nov 1999

Winning The Battle, Losing The War?: Judicial Scrutiny Of Prisoners' Statutory Claims Under The Americans With Disabilities Act, Christopher J. Burke

Michigan Law Review

When he was convicted in 1994 of drunken driving, escape, and resisting arrest, Ronald Yeskey was sentenced to serve 18 to 36 months in a Pennsylvania prison. In addition, the judge recommended that Yeskey be sent to a motivational boot camp operated by the state. Upon successful completion of the boot camp program, Yeskey's sentence would then be reduced to six months. Although he eagerly wanted to participate, the prison refused him entrance into the boot camp program because of his history of hypertension, and also denied him admission into an alternative program for the disabled. As a result, he …

Illinois V. Perkins, Marty Jaquez Nov 1999

Illinois V. Perkins, Marty Jaquez

San Diego Law Review

In Illinois v. Perkins, the United States Supreme Court held that an undercover police officer need not give Miranda warnings before questioning an incarcerated suspect. In doing so, the Court found that the interests protected by Miranda are not implicated when a suspect does not know the identity of his interrogator. This Note analyzes the Court's reasoning in light of the concerns that motivated the Miranda Court. The analysis reveals that the Perkins reflects the Court's propensity to undermine the Miranda. Unlike other Supreme Court cases creating exceptions to Miranda, Perkins permits deliberate police deception in obtaining an unwarned confession …

Towards The Cathedral: Ancient Sanctuary Represented In The American Context, Michael Scott Feeley Nov 1999

Towards The Cathedral: Ancient Sanctuary Represented In The American Context, Michael Scott Feeley

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, Mr. Feeley, discusses the historical roots of the power of the Church to provide sanctuary to those in fear of life and limb. Tracing its historical roots, the author identifies three elements of sanctuary - person, place, governmental check. He then demonstrates that the American Sanctuary Movement contains these defining elements of historical sanctuary. An analysis of the Sanctuary Movement concludes that, despite its different features and cultural locus, the Movement embodies the ancient elements of person, place and governmental check transformed, rather than transubstantiated by the American context.
