Pastoral Evangelism: A Model For Effective Evangelism As Demonstrated By The Ministries Of John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, And John William Jones In The Revival Of The Army Of Northern Virginia In 1863, William E. Brown

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present the effectiveness of a pastoral evangelism methodology. John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, and John William Jones exemplified this methodology while ministering in the camps of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Chapter one explains the research parameters and introduces the historical epoch of Broadus's, Dickinson's, and Jones's army camp ministry. The revival occurred at the end of a transitional period in American revivalism. The chapter surveys sociological, theological, and denominational events in the period 1840-1861 which influenced the men's formation in ministry. This covers the period of the childhood of Broadus, Dickinson, …

Animal Ethics And Animal Welfare Science: Bridging The Two Cultures, David Fraser Dec 1999

Animal Ethics And Animal Welfare Science: Bridging The Two Cultures, David Fraser

Animal Welfare Collection

Since the 1970s, scientists studying animal welfare and philosophers writing about animal ethics have worked toward the common goal of understanding and articulating our proper relationship to animals of other species. However, the two groups approached this task using such different concepts, assumptions, and vocabulary that they functioned as two distinct ‘‘cultures’’ with little mutual understanding or communication. Some of the best known ethical writing created barriers for scientists because it tended (1) to focus only on the level of the individual rather than making some decisions at the level of the population, ecosystem or species, (2) to advocate single …

Exploring Effects Of School Sport Experiences On Sport Participation In Later Life, James Curtis, William Mcteer, Philip White

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

This paper presents findings on the relationship between high school sport participation and involvement in sport as adults. The data are provided by a survey of a large representative national sample of adult Canadians. For different age subgroups among women and men, we tested the school sport experiences hypothesis that sport involvement during the high school years contributes to later adult involvement in sport. The measurement of sport involvement in the high school years is concerned with intramural and inter-school activities. Adult sport activity has three measures: sport involvement per se, involvement in an organized setting, and competitive involvement. …

Regional Analysis Of Human Development In Canada, Srimanta Mohant Dec 1999

Regional Analysis Of Human Development In Canada, Srimanta Mohant

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Regional imbalances in development occur in most societies. This study is an example of comparing human development across the provinces of Canada. The study has four directions of emphasis: education, economy, health, and society. In this study seventeen variables are investigated, which reflect the various dimensions of human development. These variables are aggregate in nature. Using the taxonomic method, the variations among the provinces are examined. The analysis reveals that British Columbia has the highest scores and Newfoundland has the lowest scores on the human development index. The results also show the aspects of human development that are not satisfactory …

Empowerment Through Organisation: Ela Bhatt As Told To Rajesh Agrawal, Rajesh Agrawal

IIMB Management Review

Ela Bhatt, founder of the Self-Employed Women's Association, an organisation set up in 1972 to help homebased producers to organise for their welfare and selfrespect, talks to Rajesh Agrawal about her mission to bring visibility and self reliance to women workers and the unorganised sector. A staunch Gandhian, Ela Bhatt believes, and has demonstrated, that the key to the empowerment of the poor lies in organisation and in providing access to resources.

The Increase In Intergenerational African American Families Headed By Grandmothers, Dorothy S. Ruiz, Iris Carlton-Laney

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article analyzes census data on grandparent heads of household. Information on African American grandparents, grandmothers in particular, is the focus of this analysis. The data include a profile of African American grandparent householders, reasons for the increase in households headed by grandparents, challenges and problems, living arrangements/household characteristics, and implications for practice. African American children are more likely to live in the home of their grandparents than are White or Hispanic children. In 1993, 12 percent of African American children lived in the home of their grandparent in comparison to 4 percent for Whites and 6 percent for Hispanics. …

Melting Multiculturalism? Legacies Of Assimilation Pressures In Human Service Organizations, Darlene L. Piña, Laura Canty-Swapp Dec 1999

Melting Multiculturalism? Legacies Of Assimilation Pressures In Human Service Organizations, Darlene L. Piña, Laura Canty-Swapp

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines non-profit human service agency workers' discussions of their work with diverse clients. These conversations are understood within the competing social agendas of multiculturalism and assimilation, and they suggest how service providers may resist or perpetuate the social control of people of color. Findings revealed that people of color were often excluded from providers' notions of American identity. It was common for providers, both whites and people of color, to both wittingly and unwittingly describe pressures to assimilate their clients. Providers disagreed on the merits and consequences of these assimilation pressures, with some seeing harm done to themselves …

Life After Foster Care: Services And Policies For Former Foster Youth, Madeleine R. Stoner Dec 1999

Life After Foster Care: Services And Policies For Former Foster Youth, Madeleine R. Stoner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article argues that interventions targeted to the needs of emancipated foster youth can prevent them from dependency, homelessness, and incarceration. It presents a profile of emancipated foster youth; focuses on their service needs; and, describes three program models addressing these. The data sources are a synthesis of previous research on independent living programs and findings about recently initiated programs. The data presented suggest policy changes to assure that emancipated foster youth continue to receive necessary service for self-sufficiency after they reach the legal emancipation age.

Intelligent Visualization And Automated Processing For Large Scale Geographic Information Systems, Yu Jiang Dec 1999

Intelligent Visualization And Automated Processing For Large Scale Geographic Information Systems, Yu Jiang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on developing a new output system that compacts maps in multiple projections into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) without visual errors, through constructing a discrete GIS database that is managed by a Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS). Unlike in a traditional large GIS database, the data are "physically discrete but logically continuous." In a new discrete GIS database, every map keeps its individuality without a relationship to any other map, and the relationships among the maps are centrally managed by a RDBMS. A study site was chosen at the boundary of the state of Indiana …

Perceiving Organizational Conflict: The Effect Of Occupational Rank And Sex On Perceptions Of Conflict In The Workplace, Eric Hatcher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study, perceptions of conflict were examined with respect to sex and occupational rank. The model for this study was Tjosvold's cooperation theory. Yet, unlike much of Tjosvold's work, I examined cooperation as a dependent rather than an independent variable. A reward-level pre-test was used to account for the predisposition to cooperate, and a mixed motive scale (post-test) was used to measure any differences in cooperation between occupational ranks and the sexes. Two hypotheses in this study were tested. First, in a between-rank conflict, supervisors were expected to view the conflict as competitive, while subordinates were expected to view …

It's Not Just Hair: Historical And Cultural Considerations For An Emerging Technology, Deborah Pergament Dec 1999

It's Not Just Hair: Historical And Cultural Considerations For An Emerging Technology, Deborah Pergament

Chicago-Kent Law Review

History reflects the social, religious and political importance of human hair. Individuals have used hairstyles to flaunt social conventions about gender, race, sexual identity, and social status. Totalitarian governments have regulated hairstyles as a means of social control and dehumanization. Today, advances in technology now make it possible to discover information about an individual's current or potential health status. Judicial decisions and administrative regulations offer individuals limited protection from state or institutional intrusion into the information revealed by genetic hair analysis. This Article argues that the explosion of technologies that use hair to reveal intimate details of an individual's biological …
