The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols Oct 1999

The Only Thing You Really Got Is This Minute: Homeless Women Re-Visioning The Future, Kathryn M. Feltey, Laura Nichols

Sociology

As we enter the millennium, growing numbers of women and children join the ranks of the homeless around the globe. 1 Common factors contributing to homelessness include the feminization of poverty, a shortage of affordable low-income housing and welfare policies focused on short-term relief. Unique factors include war and political upheaval that produce a mobile population of refugees who are homeless.

In thinking about the corning millennium, feminists are challenged to envision a future where the economics and politics of gender do not inevitably produce poverty and homelessness. Homelessness in women's lives is both a symptom and an outcome of …

Malcolm X And Symbolic Convergence Theory, Jill L. Pittelkow Oct 1999

Malcolm X And Symbolic Convergence Theory, Jill L. Pittelkow

Theses and Graduate Projects

The focus of this paper will be the application of symbolic convergence theory to the leadership attributes of Malcolm X.

Symbolic Convergence Theory focuses on determining and identifying symbols in diverse communities and showing how the meanings for these symbols intersect to create shared results.

In the case of Malcolm X, several ideas which initially sounded radical and frightening to many white people became more solid and reasonable when presented by themes consonant with mainstream American culture.

By focusing on specific examples used by Malcolm X to present his ideas to diverse cultures, I hope to emphasize the importance of …

An Examination Of Multi-Institutional Networks, Nancy L. Thomas Oct 1999

An Examination Of Multi-Institutional Networks, Nancy L. Thomas

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

The purpose of this paper is to identify techniques for designing and maintaining effective multi-institutional collaborative projects that will also encourage the success of each individual institution. It contains recommendations regarding the formation and management of the networks. First, it reviews project goals and desired outcomes, with consideration of whether collaboration should be a means or an end. Next, the paper turns to strategies for forming and managing networks, with particular attention to the selection and role of a “project leader.” It then considers the role and responsibility of institutional participants, reviewing criteria for network participation and arguing in favor …

A Model Job Training Program For Summer Youth: Library Interns At Grambling State University A. C. Lewis Memorial Library, Grambling, Louisiana, Sally Carroll, Sandy Stokley

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

A six-week university library intern program sponsored by the Job Training Partnership Act investigated the impact on 12 economically disadvantaged young persons facing nationally recognized problems pertaining to inadequate reading and math skills, work ethics, job skills, and motivation to complete school. Participants, predominantly (92%) African-American high school students, worked at Grambling State University, an historically black university, under predominantly (85%) African-American supervisors. Interns received academic enrichment, work experience, and life skills, primarily through pre-testing, classroom training, orientations by departmental supervisor, "hands-on" group projects, written assignments, daily reviews, and post-testing. Statistical data verify recommendations in the literature that job training …

Background And Synopsis: Symposium On The Great Plains Grasslands At The Millennium, J. E. Mitchell, Svata M. Louda, B. Gillam

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Research on biodiversity, landscape ecology, grazing management, greenhouse gas effects, control of invasive species, riparian ecology, sustainable development, and related fields is forging a new and broader understanding of the Great Plains and its grassland ecosystems. This research documents dramatic changes that are taking place across the Great Plains and their consequences. First, we review the factors that led to the January 1999 symposium, "Great Plains at the Millennium," sponsored by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, USDA Forest Service, Ecological Society of America, Society for Range Management, as well as the Center for Grassland Studies and the Center for Great …

Review Of Bugs In The System: Redesigning The Pesticide Industry For Sustainable Agriculture Edited By William Vorley And Dennis Keeney, Robert J. Wright Oct 1999

Review Of Bugs In The System: Redesigning The Pesticide Industry For Sustainable Agriculture Edited By William Vorley And Dennis Keeney, Robert J. Wright

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

At first glance you might wonder what, if anything, pesticides and sustainable agriculture have in common. To quote the editors: "This book is a case study of an industry which finds itself with a vision of sustainable development and an entire product range which seems to be an anathema to that vision - pesticides - and a uniform perspective of its role in agriculture. We hope that this study is the beginning of an articulation of the choices that face the leaders, regulators and other stakeholders of this particularly controversial industry if they are to choose a course of sustainability." …

Educational Quality And County Government Services: Rural Nebraskans' Perceived Impacts Of Recent And Proposed Legislation, John C. Allen, R. Filkins, Sam Cordes Oct 1999

Educational Quality And County Government Services: Rural Nebraskans' Perceived Impacts Of Recent And Proposed Legislation, John C. Allen, R. Filkins, Sam Cordes

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Many changes have been occurring in rural Nebraska in the area of local finances. Recent school finance legislation has changed the formula that distributes state aid to schools (LB 806) and also imposed new property tax levy limits on school districts (LB 1114). Discussions have also arisen about consolidating county offices and services. Given all these changes, how do rural Nebraskans feel about these issues? How do they feel the new school finance legislation has affected the quality of education in their local school district? Do they support the consolidation of certain county government offices and services with a neighboring …

Pitirim A. Sorokin On Order, Change And The Reconstruction Of Society: An Integral Perspective, Barry V. Johnston Oct 1999

Pitirim A. Sorokin On Order, Change And The Reconstruction Of Society: An Integral Perspective, Barry V. Johnston

Comparative Civilizations Review

Integration is simultaneously an epistemology, psychology, sociology of change and theory of history. It is the theoretical foundation of Sorokin’s general sociology and later works on the crisis of modernity, altruism and social reconstruction. This paper delineates the evolution of the concept from Social and cultural Dynamics to Sorokin’s work at the Harvard Research Center in Creative Altruism. What results from this chain of historical analysis is an integrated conceptual approach to the nature of humanness, knowledge, conflict resolution, and prosocial forms of human organization. As a result, integralism broadens sociological discourse and yields new insights into social problems and …
