This paper investigates the relative influence of the husband, wife, children, and others in 5 sub-decisions involved in the choice of a school, and distinguishes families reporting different roles on their demographic characteristics. Cluster analysis was used to develop segments on the basis of family roles. Results indicate that children and others have negligible influence in this particular service and that …

The Future Of Bioethics Testimony: Guidelines For Determining Qualifications, Reliability, And Helpfulness, Bethany Spielman, George Agich

San Diego Law Review

This Article addresses key questions about expert bioethics testimony4 from within the framework of the basic rule concerning expert witnesses, Federal Rule of Evidence 702.' This Rule6 requires judges to affirmatively answer three basic questions before admitting expert testimony: (1) does this witness qualify as an expert by knowledge, skill, experience, training, or education; (2) does the testimony consist of scientific, technical or other specialized knowledge; and (3) will the testimony assist the trier of fact. Bioethics testimony presents distinctive problems in each area, on which commentators have not necessarily focused. Part II of this Article addresses the question of …

An Examination Of An Interpersonal Dominance Construct., John Griffin Cole Jan 1999

An Examination Of An Interpersonal Dominance Construct., John Griffin Cole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the validity and reliability of an interactional measure of Interpersonal Dominance. The study employed surveys from 202 college students, and examined self-report data with regards to two temperament measures (the Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Five-Factor Model of Personality), several trait communication variables (Socio-Communicative Orientation, Communication Apprehension, Self-Report of Immediacy, Shyness, and Verbal Aggression), and the interactional measure of Interpersonal Dominance as advanced by Burgoon, Johnson, and Koch (1998). The study determined that the Interpersonal Dominance measure advanced by Burgoon et al. may in fact be measuring trait communication variables, and not necessarily interaction. This study also …

Developing Critical Consciousness: Representations Of Race And Gender In Two Afro-German Works., Maren Knebel Jan 1999

Developing Critical Consciousness: Representations Of Race And Gender In Two Afro-German Works., Maren Knebel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Eva Demski and Ika Hügel-Marshall are two contemporary women writers whose works contribute significantly to the Afro-German culture. Demski is a “white” German author who depicts in her novel the life of an Afro-German woman, Afra, as well as the life of her “white” daughter, Nivea. Hügel-Marshall, who was born in 1947 as the daughter of a German mother and an African-American father, depicts in her autobiography her own development from object to subject. This thesis demonstrates that both authors encourage a development of critical consciousness by creating written evidence of a shared Afro-German identity and by expressing the problems …

The design measured the differences between affective learning, cognitive learning and student perceptions of teacher nonverbal immediacy. Participants were randomly assigned to a class, which utilized either: lecture, handout or the use of CAI. Results showed significant differences between teachers and a slight difference in …

"Hearers Of The Word": Luke's Gospel As Sacramental Formation For A Liturgical Community, Arthur A. Just Jr.

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

It is privilege to return to the Institute of Liturgical Studies after a long absence, especially on a subject that has consumed me in one way or another over the last fifteen years. I am very grateful to the advisory council for assigning me a topic that develops the biblical foundations of the catechumenate. My doctoral work on Emmaus, my vocation as professor of exegesis and pastoral theology, my participation in the ELCA and LCMS working groups on the catechumenate, as well as my participation in the Missouri Synod's efforts to develop its own catechumenal process, have all contributed …
