Children's Perceptions Of Older Adults : Past And Present, Mary Kathryn Hatcher Jones

Graduate Research Papers

This study compared more recent research findings, 1990s to present, with the results of earlier research studies, 1970s and 1980s, to determine whether children's perceptions of older adults have changed. Factors that contribute to and inhibit children's positive perceptions of older adults were identified. Guidelines for facilitating children's positive perceptions of older adults were suggested, and conclusions were drawn from the literature. Recommendations were made for further study of children's perceptions of older adults.

Literature Webs In The Literature Based Elementary Reading Program: An Annotated Bibliography, Nancy O'Keefe

Graduate Research Papers

Every classroom is a collection of unique individuals with varying abilities and interests. These differences are especially apparent in the elementary reading classroom. Though individual students are reading at many different levels it is still possible for them to work together and to learn from each other.

It is the purpose of this project to assist the third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers of Karen Acres Elementary School in Urbandale, Iowa through the development of multi-level reading webs. These webs may be used to differentiate instruction for those reading both above and below grade level without segregating students into separate …

Garfield County Resident Perceptions Of The Indirect Effects Of The 2002 Winter Olympics, Cary Michael Deccio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined rural resident perceptions of a nearby mega-event. Tourism leaders can gauge resident perceptions and thereby plan development in conjunction with the local people, not in spite of them; It is anticipated that the 2002 Winter Olympics will have some impact on Garfield County, Utah. Using social exchange theory, the study sought to better understand public sentiment regarding the upcoming mega-event. Certain resident values were examined in relation to tourism; The results show that some residents perceive that the Olympics will bring opportunities, but most residents do not anticipate any impact from the event. Residents who are economically …

A Political -Economic View Of The Federal Organization Of Work, Rose Marie Richardson Jan 1999

A Political -Economic View Of The Federal Organization Of Work, Rose Marie Richardson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Using a comparative historical review of changes in the organization of work, this study analyzes the changing organization of federal work in relation to the organization of work in the private sector. Following a break in 1883 with the simple control wielded by political appointees running federal agencies, federal work became more tightly controlled through a greater bureaucratic organization of government work. However, a continuing influence of private work practices on federal work, such as the incorporation of the principles of scientific management, suggests not only a relationship between private and federal work practices but one that is stronger than …

The Value Of Multimethod Qualitative/Quantitative Research Methodology In An Educational Program Evaluation: A Case Study, Catharine C. Knight, Walter J. Kuleck

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper presents the case of an evaluation of a literacy-based public school classroom intervention that had been implemented without initial regard for subsequent evaluation, to examine the value of a multimethod qualitative and quantitative approach. We show how this evaluation challenge was ad-dressed using both techniques, and how they complement each other to create richer understandings. Given the small number of participants in and the brevity of the intervention, the finding of quantitative results that support the very positive qualitative results is encouraging. Thus, the multimethod qualitative/ quantitative approach appears to have been a useful and informative one in …

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, Takehiko Yamato Jan 1999

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, Takehiko Yamato

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies public good provision in the laboratory using the voluntary contribution mechanism, in a cross-cultural experiment conducted in the United States and Japan. Our environment differs from the standard voluntary contribution mechanism because in one treatment, subjects first decide whether or not to participate in providing this public good. This participation decision is conveyed to the other subject prior to the subjects' contribution decisions. We find that only the American data support the evolutionary stable strategy Nash equilibrium predicitons, and that behavior is significantly different across countries. Japanese subjects are more likely to act spitefully in the early …

The Self In ‘Fieldwork’: A Methodological Concern, Christie L. Fox, Beverly Stoeltje, Stephen Olbrys

English Faculty Publications

As concepts of reflexivity and postcolonial perspectives have advanced our understandings of the way we represent those we study, they have also introduced a consciousness of the role of the self in research. This article reviews the history of the field of folklore with regard to the method of obtaining data or texts and demonstrates that collecting material contrasts with the practice of conducting research in the field. Pointing to a moment of transition, it shows that theories of folklore had to undergo significant change before methods of research would acknowledge the identity of the fieldworker and its significance.

The Meaning Of Religious Belief, Practice, And Community For Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs, Loren Dean Marks

Theses and Dissertations

While the tragedy of American fatherlessness has evoked a growing body of research, religious beliefs, practices, and communities have not been a significant part of the scholarly discussion. This article discusses possible reasons for this and reviews the religion and family literature with a focus on fathers. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 19 Latter-day Saint (LDS) fathers of children with special needs and analyzed to examine the meaning of religious experience for these fathers and their families. Analysis indicated three dimensions of religious experience: spiritual belief, religious practice, and faith community. The spiritual belief in an eternal perspective, including the …

The Influence Of Religiosity In The Construction Of Meaning From Advertising Messages Intended To Promote Lifestyle Values, Lillian Billing Jan 1999

The Influence Of Religiosity In The Construction Of Meaning From Advertising Messages Intended To Promote Lifestyle Values, Lillian Billing

Theses and Dissertations

Religiosity has largely been ignored by consumer research as a factor in the negotiation of meaning from magazine advertisements containing lifestyle messages. A meaning based study was undertaken to seek to identify its presence and emergence within a religious audience. A qualitative methodology employing in-depth, phenomenological interviewing was designed. Six members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, three men and three women, were invited to give their interpretations, thoughts, and feelings towards four magazine advertisements. A second in-depth phenomenological interview was conducted with each participant to provide individual lifeworld contexts. Analysis employed a previously tested conceptual construct, …

Religiosity And Physical Fitness: A Study Of Middle-Aged Mormon Men, Janette Olsen Jan 1999

Religiosity And Physical Fitness: A Study Of Middle-Aged Mormon Men, Janette Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

Research has related both physical fitness and religiosity to health. This study combined these ideas and examined the relationship between religiosity and physical fitness among middle aged Mormon men (n=110). Mormons are an ideal population for study because of their strict health code. Fitness variables were grip strength, waist/hip ratio, body mass index (BMI) and estimated maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). A questionnaire assessed level of religiosity and separated subjects into two groups: highly religious (n=35) and less religious (n=14). Moderately religious subjects (n=61) were omitted. A one way ANOVA (between-groups design) found no significant differences in fitness variables between groups. …

Latter-Day Saint Fathers Of Children With Special Needs: A Phenomenological Study, Michael M. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

This research, presents a qualitative study of six Latter-day Saint fathers of children with special needs. In-depth interviews were used to examine the demands and resources fathers draw upon in meeting the needs of their child(ren), the application of the conceptual ethic of fathering as generative work and crisis/stress theory, as well as an analysis of how fathers incorporated their religious beliefs, faith, and practices into fathering their special needs children. Narrative accounts are used to illustrate the results. These results are then applied to an integrated conceptual framework and clinical applications are made.

Covenant And Contract, Steven Nock, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 1999

Covenant And Contract, Steven Nock, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

In this article we ask, "What distinguishes a covenant from a mere contract, and what role does this distinction play for natural law?" Both of us have thought substantially about covenant over the past several years. The concept of covenant comes to us originally from religious sources, so we have paid explicit attention to what the Bible and organized religion have to say about covenant. We have also drawn from our own disciplines of law, economics, and sociology as they explain or draw from the initial concepts.

Covenant is a concept that takes us beyond contract. Indeed, the idea that …
