Measuring Living Standards With Proxy Variables, Mark R. Montgomery, Michele Gragnolati, Kathleen A. Burke, Edmundo Paredes Jan 1999

Measuring Living Standards With Proxy Variables, Mark R. Montgomery, Michele Gragnolati, Kathleen A. Burke, Edmundo Paredes

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Very few demographic surveys in developing countries gather information on household income or consumption expenditure, despite the theoretical importance of these measures. Consequently, researchers have been forced to rely on ad hoc collections of proxy measures for living standards, and the properties of these proxies have not been systematically analyzed. In this research, we ask what hypotheses can be tested using proxy variables, and evaluate the performance of proxy measures in relation to consumption expenditures per adult, our preferred measure of living standards. We find that the proxy variables commonly employed in demographic research are very weak predictors of consumption …

The Decline Of Female Circumcision In Egypt: Evidence And Interpretation [Arabic], Omaima El-Gibaly, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Barbara Mensch, Wesley H. Clark Jan 1999

The Decline Of Female Circumcision In Egypt: Evidence And Interpretation [Arabic], Omaima El-Gibaly, Barbara L. Ibrahim, Barbara Mensch, Wesley H. Clark

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Female circumcision is widespread in Egypt. Research suggests that the practice persists because of a belief that circumcision will moderate female sexuality, that it will assure a girl’s marriageability, and that it is sanctioned by Islam. Using data from a nationally representative survey of adolescents, this paper investigates the prevalence and social correlates of circumcision among girls aged 10-19, the circumstances surrounding the procedure, and the attitudes of adolescents towards it. While the vast majority of adolescents are circumcised, a life table analysis indicates that girls today are at least 10 percentage points less likely to undergo female circumcision than …

The Structure And Procedures Of Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Units In United States Police Organizations, Robert Joseph Louden

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Hostage/Crisis negotiation was formally developed as a police function in the United States by the New York City Police Department in 1972–1973. The procedure has saved countless fives. There have also been many hostage/barricade situations which ended in disaster.

This study is an analysis of the hostage/crisis negotiation practices of 276 local, county and state police agencies in the U.S. which employ at least 100 sworn officers and utilize some standard system of negotiation for response to hostage and barricade situations. A four-page questionnaire developed specifically for the project provided data about policy matters, organizational configurations, and about the selection …

The Plant Sociology And Ecology Of The Upper Göksu Catchment Area(Hadim-Konya) And Environs, Hayretti̇n Ocakverdi̇, Sali̇h Oflaz

Turkish Journal of Botany

The Taurus mountains area is one of the most interesting areas of Turkey as regards flora and vegetation. The region is situated on a transition zone between the Mediterranean and continental climate and contains many microclimate areas because of its topographic character. Therefore, studies on the flora and vegetation of the Taurus mountains give quite different results. The studies on the catchment area of Göksu valley and environs which exhibit Mediterranean climate and is a part of the central Tauruses were ccarried out in 1995-1996. In this study, Braun-Blanquet's floristic system principle was used and six associations (five of them …

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador Jan 1999

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Deslanting the Lens examines the historical and sociological implications of how Asian men have been represented in popular American film. From the early days of “yellowface” to caricatures like Long Duck Dong, Asian men have been relegated to perpetual foreigner status in American cinema. This paper will explore why the portrayal of Asian men has been limited to very specific ideas about Asian and Asian Americans are in society. This analysis will also include how socio/political events have shaped and influence popular perceptions about Asians, that inform how Asian men continue to be depicted in film.

Forms Of Formalism, Richard H. Pildes Jan 1999

Forms Of Formalism, Richard H. Pildes

Faculty Articles

Does modern American legal formalism exist, and what might that question mean? Three modes of self-styled legal formalism are presented at this Symposium: (1) formalism as anticonsequential morality in law; (2) formalism as apurposive rulefollowing; and (3) formalism as a regulatory tool for producing optimally efficient mixes of law and norms in contract enforcement regimes. Even superficially, the problems these "formalisms" aim to solve and their operational structures share little in common. But beyond their obvious structural differences, these modern "formalisms" diverge even more profoundly in their underlying conceptions of morals, politics, and society. Indeed, the animating conceptions of morality …

Regulating The Market For Snitches , Ian Weinstein Jan 1999

Regulating The Market For Snitches , Ian Weinstein

Faculty Scholarship

These are boom times for the sellers and buyers of cooperation in the federal criminal justice system. While prosecutors have always welcomed the assistance of snitches, tougher federal sentencing laws have led to a significant increase in cooperation as more defendants try to provide "substantial assistance in the investigation or prosecution of another person," to have some chance of receiving a significant sentence reduction. In 1996 one of every five defendants sentenced in the federal courts won mitigation by providing substantial assistance. Many more defendants tried but failed to close the deal. The overheated cooperation market is creating serious problems …

Depressive Symptomatology Among Hispanic Ministers Of The North American Division Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Enrique Nicolas Calandra Jan 1999

Depressive Symptomatology Among Hispanic Ministers Of The North American Division Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Enrique Nicolas Calandra

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The intensity of our work and living and the struggles we all experience have led to a dramatic increase in the incidence and severity of stress-related disorders, including depression. Ministers—as human beings and helping professionals—are not exempt from this reality. In fact, several studies have shown they are especially vulnerable to it. Although this is a sensitive issue, it needs to be discussed more openly, acknowledging its existence and taking steps to find causes and solutions.

This dissertation seeks to (1) measure and analyze the existence and the intensity of depressive symptomatology among Hispanic pastors of the North American Division …

The Development Of A Worship Education Program, Neal Maynard Matson Jan 1999

The Development Of A Worship Education Program, Neal Maynard Matson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has never developed a theology of worship. Therefore, the members are unacquainted with the biblical principles of worship. Too often their patterns of worship renewal are often influenced more by sociological factors and methodology than by theology. There is a definite need of a worship education program for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Method

A syllabus was produced for a seminar presentation on the biblical principles of worship. The seminar was presented over a thirteen-week period. Worship patterns of the College Place Village Church were discussed. A survey employed to discover members’ worship knowledge and preferences …

Christian Family As Church? Inquiry, Analysis, And Pastoral Implications, Ennio Pasquale Mastroianni Jan 1999

Christian Family As Church? Inquiry, Analysis, And Pastoral Implications, Ennio Pasquale Mastroianni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to determine in what sense the Christian family can be called Church: not at all, analogically, and/or univocally. Integral to the dissertation is that the hierarchical magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church has developed significantly the ecclesial nature of the Christian family during the past three decades. During the Second Vatican Council the council fathers developed a seed text in which they use the term "domestic Church" to connote this ecclesial dimension of Christian marriage and the family which derives from it.

The core of this study is two-fold: first, to determine the meaning, …
