Labor's Changing Responses To Management Rhetorics: A Study Of Accounting-Based Incentive Plans During The First Half Of The 20th Century, Leslie S. Oakes, Mark A. Covaleski, Mark William Dirsmith Jan 1999

Labor's Changing Responses To Management Rhetorics: A Study Of Accounting-Based Incentive Plans During The First Half Of The 20th Century, Leslie S. Oakes, Mark A. Covaleski, Mark William Dirsmith

Accounting Historians Journal

This study compares organized labor's reactions to changing management rhetorics as these rhetorics surrounded accounting-based incentive plans, including profit sharing. Results suggest that labor's perceptions of profit sharing changed dramatically from the 1900-1930 period to post-World War II. The shift, in turn, prompts an exploration of two research questions: (1) how and why did the national labor discourse around the management rhetoric and its emphasis on accounting information change, and (2) how did this change render unions more governable in their support for accounting-based incentive plans?

Mission Boys, Civilized Men, And Marriage: Educated African Men In The Missions Of Southern Rhodesia, 1920–1945, Carol Summers Jan 1999

Mission Boys, Civilized Men, And Marriage: Educated African Men In The Missions Of Southern Rhodesia, 1920–1945, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

This paper examines what marriage may have meant to African men within the Christian elite of Southern Rhodesia. Using mission and government sources, it argues that domestic, Christian marriage was important to elite African men as a way of allowing them to achieve adulthood while remaining in good standing with mission sponsors who generally objected to or feared indigenous ideas of patriarchal male adulthood. Tracing life histories of two American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions ministers, one who succeeded in remaining within the mission system and one who left, blacklisted, it explores how domestic, Christian marriage defused many of …

The Inter-Organisational Relationships In Irish Tourism: The Example Of Lough Derg, Kevin Griffin

Articles

The data presented in this paper are drawn from research work carried out by the author into the operation and organisation of Irish tourism at a local level. In carrying out this work 104 tourism operators were surveyed in detail in order to assess their attitudes and opinions on a number of issues. The two dominant themes which emerged from this research were the highly varied nature of the tourism operations and the multitude of service providers with whom they interact. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate this diversity of Inter-organisational Relationships (IORs) and to propose an organisational …

Visualizing Ah Q : An Allegory's Resistance To Representation, Harry H. Kuoshu Jan 1999

Visualizing Ah Q : An Allegory's Resistance To Representation, Harry H. Kuoshu

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Ah Q, Lu Xun's portraiture of Chinese national character figured in a rural rogue, has been an enigma in its representations. Lu Xun's text presents an interesting allegorical irony: while the experience of Ah Q reveals a mentality which makes his otherwise trivial anecdotes interesting, he, as Leo Ou- fan Lee observes, "is a body without an interior self, a face in the crowd, and the crowd’s summary mirror-image”. From the visual sense, we may illustrate this irony by taking Ah Q as both a voyeur and a spectacle - by constantly visualizing spectacles which he may victimize, Ah Q …

Attitudes And Perceptions About Ecological Resources And Hazards Of People Living Around The Savannah River Site, Joanna Burger, Jessica Sanchez, J. Whitfield Gibbons, Jeanine Ondrof, Robert Ramos, Michael J. Mcmahon, Karen F. Gaines, Christine Lord, Marie Fullmer, Michael Gochfeld Jan 1999

Attitudes And Perceptions About Ecological Resources And Hazards Of People Living Around The Savannah River Site, Joanna Burger, Jessica Sanchez, J. Whitfield Gibbons, Jeanine Ondrof, Robert Ramos, Michael J. Mcmahon, Karen F. Gaines, Christine Lord, Marie Fullmer, Michael Gochfeld

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Although considerable attention is devoted to environmental monitoring and assessment with respect to both pollutants and the status of particular plant or animal populations, less attention is devoted to assessing people's attitudes about the relative importance of ecological resources. In this paper we examine the attitudes and perceptions about ecological resources of people living around the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), in South Carolina. Our overall hypothesis is that people who are directly affected by the possible outcomes and consequences of a particular hazard (i.e., those people employed at SRS) will undervalue the risks and overvalue the potential …

Urbanization And Related Socio-Economic Problems In Ibadan Area, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Occasional Papers

This paper traces the evolution of urbanization in Ibadan area to political, institutional, economic and social factors. It broadly classifies the socio-economic problems of urbanization in Ibadan area into environmental crisis, crime/violence and urban poverty. Relying on secondary data and published materials, it identifies the major environmental problems as solid waste, flooding and water pollution, with the sanitation and eating habits of the people playing a great role in all of them. Dispossession-related crimes, particularly stealing and theft, are considered the most prominent of all the recorded crimes while violent crimes (mostly assaults) are found to be relatively few. Treatment And Intervention Strategies For Battered Women : Breaking The Cycle Of Violence, Hope L. Huff Jan 1999

Treatment And Intervention Strategies For Battered Women : Breaking The Cycle Of Violence, Hope L. Huff

Graduate Research Papers

Partner violence is now understood to affect at least 8.7 million women per year (Roberts, 1998). As a result of the chronic abuse, many women suffer from psychological disorders requiring professional help. A large percentage of battered women demonstrate symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and somatic complaints (Margolin & Burman, 1993; Yegidis, 1992). Treatment and intervention strategies will be introduced for both individual and group therapy, based primarily on cognitive approaches.

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki Jan 1999

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics: A Criticism Of Reuben Hersh's What Is Mathematics, Really? And The Humanist Philosophy Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Mathematics, as an academic discipline, has stood for many years as the last bastion against a growing tide of intellectual relativism that has become all but ubiquitous. More recently, however, efforts have been made to "humanize" mathematics by advocating a social-constructivist approach to the philosophy of mathematics, both in practice and education. This paper is intended to serve as a critical response to one advocate of this approach, Reuben Hersh (What Is Mathematics, Really?, 1997), and in the process a defense of Platonism.
