Farm Operator Satisfaction With Retail Pesticide Suppliers In The Arkansas Delta, Bruce L. Dixon, Damon Mckelvey, Travis Rogers, Frank L. Farmer, Daniel M. Settlage
AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
Two hundred ninety farm operators in the three easternmost crop reporting districts in Arkansas responded to a mail survey in November 1996 about their preferences and satisfaction with retail pesticide suppliers. Results show most farmers are quite satisfied with their main retail pesticide supplier, although 55.5% of the farm operators used more than one retail pesticide supplier in 1996. Users of multiple suppliers were less satisfied with their suppliers than those using only one supplier. Availability of certain pesticides was the most frequently mentioned reason for using multiple suppliers. Several attributes were important in selecting the main supplier with reputation being …

The Operational Implementation Of Community Mine Awareness For Development: Practical Experiences In Mozambique, Peter Merten
The Operational Implementation Of Community Mine Awareness For Development: Practical Experiences In Mozambique, Peter Merten
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The idea for the Community Mine Awareness for Development (CMAD) concept was especially designed by the GTZ/MineTech partnership to minimize the risks of mines and UXO to the local population. In those areas, no complete mine clearance could be undertaken effectively in the short term. By integrating educational and specific sociological elements, CMAD aims to support the active participation of the villagers and their local communities in the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction. Hence, CMAD is a specific empowerment process designed for those communities which have to live with the mine and UXO threat for a long period before receiving …

A Lack Of Civic Commitment?, Pablo Eisenberg
A Lack Of Civic Commitment?, Pablo Eisenberg
Civic Engagement
A recent study on youth leaders.hip and community service, conducted by Peter D. Hart Associates for Public Allies (a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that promotes youth leadership), found that today's young Americans are committed to community service and direct, personal assistance to others. But the survey of 728 people between the ages of 18 and 30 also raised disturbing questions about the young generation's commitment to civic engagement and social change.

The Improvement Of Marriages And Divorces Statistics In South Africa: Relevance, Registration Issues And Challenges, Sulaiman Bah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
With the recent passing by parliament of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 (Act 120 of 1998), it is now possible to increase the coverage of registered marriages and divorces in South Africa. In the past, since certain unions were legally not recognised, the marriage statistics collected by the Department of Home Affairs excluded a large proportion of marriages, for example customary marriages among Africans. However, the passing of legislation on its own is a necessary but not sufficient condition to ensure that customary marriages are indeed registered. The aim of the paper is to explore ways of making …

Low Self-Control And Opportunity: Testing The General Theory Of Crime As An Explanation For Gender Differences In Delinquency, Teresa C. Lagrange, Robert A. Silverman
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
This research tests Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime as an explanation for gender differences in the delinquency of approximately 2,000 Canadian secondary school students. Separate psychological factors, including a preference for risk seeking, impulsivity, temper, present oriented, and carelessness, are used as measures of self-control, and additional measures of the construct are taken from the frequency of self-reported smoking and drinking. Elements of delinquent opportunity are controlled for by including measures of parental/adult super-vision. These measures and their interactions are used to predict self-reported general delinquency, property offenses, violence, and drug offenses. Results provide partial support for the …
