The Law Of Group Polarization, Cass R. Sunstein Dec 1999

The Law Of Group Polarization, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In a striking empirical regularity, deliberation tends to move groups, and the individuals who compose them, toward a more extreme point in the direction indicated by their own predeliberation judgments. For example, people who are opposed to the minimum wage are likely, after talking to each other, to be still more opposed; people who tend to support gun control are likely, after discussion, to support gun control with considerable enthusiasm; people who believe that global warming is a serious problem are likely, after discussion, to insist on severe measures to prevent global warming. This general phenomenon -- group polarization -- …

Strategy And Circumstance: The Response Of American Firms To Japanese Competition In Semiconductors, 1980-1995, Richard N. Langlois, W. Edward Steinmueller Dec 1999

Strategy And Circumstance: The Response Of American Firms To Japanese Competition In Semiconductors, 1980-1995, Richard N. Langlois, W. Edward Steinmueller

Economics Working Papers

The transistor was an American invention, and American firms led the world in semiconductor production and innovation for the first three decades of that industry's existence. In the 1980s, however, Japanese producers began to challenge American dominance. Shrill cries arose from the literature of public policy, warning that the American semiconductor industry would soon share the fate of the lamented American consumer electronics business. Few dissented from the implications: the only hope for salvation would be to adopt Japanese-style public policies and imitate the kinds of capabilities Japanese firms possessed. But the predicted extinction never occurred. Instead, American firms surged …

Technological Standards, Innovation, And Essential Facilities: Toward A Schumpeterian Post-Chicago Approach, Richard N. Langlois Dec 1999

Technological Standards, Innovation, And Essential Facilities: Toward A Schumpeterian Post-Chicago Approach, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

In this essay, I attempt to take seriously Schumpeter's perspective on competition as fundamentally about innovation. Drawing on literatures that concern themselves centrally with the patterns and processes of technological change, I focus on a set of issues very much on the present-day agenda: antitrust policy toward network industries in which technological standards are important. As both scholars and legal cases have suggested, one might logically view a set of standards as an "essential facility" - a technological bottleneck - for those who wish to connect to the network.. I attempt to define the limits of the standard price-theoretic account …

Unit Root Log Periodogram Regression, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 1999

Unit Root Log Periodogram Regression, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Log periodogram (LP) regression is shown to be consistent and to have a mixed normal limit distribution when the memory parameter d = 1. Gaussian errors are not required. Tests of d = 1 based on LP regression are consistent against d < 1 alternatives but inconsistent against d > 1 alternatives. A test based on a modified LP regression that is consistent in both directions is provided.

The Dayton Its Demonstration Project: Simulating Existing Conditions, Jill A. Swaynos, Nikiforos Stamatiadis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission is incorporating an Advanced Traveler Information System to alleviate real-time traffic problems associated with special events at the Ervin J. Nutter Center of the Wright State University. This study of the existing conditions is part of the evaluation plan and addresses two tasks: 1) documentation of the existing conditions; and 2) definition of measures of effectiveness. The existing conditions were depicted with the use of a computer simulation software package, Traffic Software Integrated System and separate scenarios were modeled for three existing conditions: ingress and egress for a special event and a major shopping …

Nonlinear Econometric Models With Cointegrated And Deterministically Trending Regressors, Yoosoon Chang, Joon Y. Park, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 1999

Nonlinear Econometric Models With Cointegrated And Deterministically Trending Regressors, Yoosoon Chang, Joon Y. Park, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops an asymptotic theory for a general class of nonlinear nonstationary regressions, extending earlier work by Phillips and Hansen (1990) on linear cointegrating regressions. The model considered accommodates a linear time trend and stationary regressors, as well as multiple I(1) regressors. We establish consistency and derive the limit distribution of the nonlinear least squares estimator. The estimator is consistent under fairly general conditions but the convergence rate and the limiting distribution are critically dependent upon the type of the regression function. For integrable regression functions, the parameter estimates converge at a reduced n 1 /4 rate and have …

Maximum Likelihood Estimation In Panels With Incidental Trends, Hyungsik Roger Moon, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 1999

Maximum Likelihood Estimation In Panels With Incidental Trends, Hyungsik Roger Moon, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

It is shown that the maximum likelihood estimator of a local to unity parameter can be consistently estimated with panel data when the cross section observations are independent. Consistency applies when there are no deterministic trends or when there is a homogeneous deterministic trend in the panel model. When there are heterogeneous deterministic trends the panel MLE of the local to unity parameter is inconsistent. This outcome provides a new instance of inconsistent ML estimation in dynamic panels, and, unlike earlier results of this type, applies when both T approaches infinity and N approaches infinity.

Discrete Fourier Transforms Of Fractional Processes, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 1999

Discrete Fourier Transforms Of Fractional Processes, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Discrete Fourier transforms (dft’s) of fractional processes are studied and an exact representation of the dft is given in terms of the component data. The new representation gives the frequency domain form of the model for a fractional process, and is particularly useful in analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the dft and periodogram in the nonstationary case when the memory parameter d > 1/2. Various asymptotic approximations are suggested. It is shown that smoothed periodogram spectral estimates remain consistent for frequencies away from the origin in the nonstationary case provided the memory parameter d < 1. When d = 1, the spectral estimates are inconsistent and converge weakly to random variates. Applications of the theory to log periodogram regression and local Whittle estimation of the memory parameter are discussed and some modified versions of these procedures are suggested.

An Analysis Of The Production Flow At Tmi Systems Design Corporation, Loren J. Zavalney Dec 1999

An Analysis Of The Production Flow At Tmi Systems Design Corporation, Loren J. Zavalney

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to perform a detailed analysis of the production process flow at TMI Systems Design Corporation that will help improve the overall efficiency of the manufacturing process. The study was sectioned into three phases. Phase one of this study was to collect data on the manufacturing process. Phase two of this study was to incorporate the manufacturing process data into flow process charts and flow diagrams. Phase three of this study was to create an operations process flow chart for the model W2052 wall cabinet.

Phase one was accomplished by collecting data while observing the …

Values-Based Strategies And Planning For Global Organisations, David Kimber Dec 1999

Values-Based Strategies And Planning For Global Organisations, David Kimber

IIMB Management Review

As social, environmental and economic conditions change over the world, global managers must adopt new strategic planning techniques. Historically two contrasting motivations for global activity can be identified. The first, based on a need to enhance security, has led to aggression and conflict. The other is based on an interest in enhancing peoples' lives and an urge to share this understanding. David Kimber suggests that understanding the second perspective, helps managers maintain a stable and long term orientation to global development. Outlining a framework for considering values, he reviews a values focus to clarify first, how it relates to the …
