The Legal Issues In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice And Jonson's Volpone, Felicia A. Matthew-Stubbs Jan 1999

The Legal Issues In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice And Jonson's Volpone, Felicia A. Matthew-Stubbs

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to explore the legal issues within William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, and Ben Jonson's Volpone. I will attempt to discover the extent to which both plays can be seen as indicative of English jurisprudence applicable to Early Modern England. I shall commence by investigating The Merchant of Venice through outlining the process of signing and sealing a contract, defining the roles of The Court of Chancery and The Court of Common Law and relating the judgements made by Portia and the Court to statutes, precedents and procedures applicable to the sixteenth and seventeenth …

Bourdieu's Concept Of Social Capital : An Examination Of His Broader Theoretical Framework And The Concept's Applications And Implications For Australian Social Policy, Dawn Marie Atkin

Theses : Honours

The concept of social capital is investigated in this thesis both in its theoretical and potential social policy environment Pierre Bourdicu 's 'Theory of Practice' provides the theoretical frame within which this concept is investigated. A variety of texts, with a particular focus on Australian publications, provide the basis for further application analysis. This is primarily a textual research therefore data gathering procedures were library based. Being a theoretical analysis of the current status of social capital, as it relates to prospective social policy reform in Australia, this thesis both collates and contributes to a body of knowledge regarding the …

Repetition Priming And Melody : Implicit Memory For Music, Jacqueline Landre Jan 1999

Repetition Priming And Melody : Implicit Memory For Music, Jacqueline Landre

Theses : Honours

The present study investigated the existence of repetition priming for melody and the extent to which that priming would be affected by the manipulation of frequency. A group of 62 university students and 2 members of the public listened to 20 high frequency and 20 low frequency melodies in the first phase of a repetition priming experiment. Participants were required to name as many melodies as they could as quickly as possible. The same melodies were then re-presented immediately in the second phase of the experiment along with another group of 40 melodies matched in frequency to those in the …

Dancing With Difference, Michael J. Lenney Jan 1999

Dancing With Difference, Michael J. Lenney

Theses : Honours

This is a symbolic interactionist study into behaviours surrounding social interaction. The study has two components, asking how people with able-bodies interact with a young person with a disability, and how does the young person, who is non-verbal, respond to and interpret such interactions? Participants were observed and recorded using a digital camera whilst interacting at a social venue. The able-bodied participants were not aware of the camera at the time of filming, and were approached after the filming to participate in the study. Seven participants were later interviewed and asked to explain what they were aware of as they …

Academic Security Education : The Development Of An Industry Based Security Management Curriculum, Layne M. Hesse

Theses : Honours

This study examined the education profiles and skills and knowledge required for security managers conducted through an educational needs analysis of the security field. Little information is currently available about security education in Australia and there is no centralised source of information about such education. There is also comparatively little information exchanged across institutions, government and industry. A survey using the interview method obtained and analysed the opinions and perceptions of security skills and knowledge from the sample population. The aim of this study was to contribute to the security field by exploring and analysing the skills and knowledge required …

A Study Of Teacher Behaviours As Interpreted By Low Achieving Passive Students, Carolyn Crook Jan 1999

A Study Of Teacher Behaviours As Interpreted By Low Achieving Passive Students, Carolyn Crook

Theses : Honours

This study explores the nature of low achieving, passive students' interpretations of teacher behaviour towards them, how these interpretations cluster into specific categories and the possibility of a mis-match existing between a teacher's intended behaviour and the student's interpretations of that behaviour. The sample consisted of four year five students, one female and three male students, who were selected from two Perth metropolitan schools. Ethnographic-case study methods were used to conduct the investigation which included fieldnotes, observations, video-taped observations, student interviews and informal teacher interviews. The study revealed that low achieving, passive students have varying interpretations of teacher behaviour. As …

Transforming The Mediasphere : Sweden, A Case Study Of Conflicting Discourses In Socialist And Capitalist Broadcasting Values, Kent Ingemar Svensson Jan 1999

Transforming The Mediasphere : Sweden, A Case Study Of Conflicting Discourses In Socialist And Capitalist Broadcasting Values, Kent Ingemar Svensson

Theses : Honours

Sweden has undergone major changes in its mediasphere during the last twelve years, during which two oppositional forces have been particularly at work, capitalist and socialist. Goth those forces have influenced the direction in which the national mediasphere is transforming. The challenges of these political discourses, and responses from the parties involved regarding the role of the media in society, has been increasingly visible since the late 1950s, when the public service monopoly was first called into question. The Swedish socialist government has promoted and protected its non - commercial public service monopoly, through which they could mould national identity …

Therapeutic Factors In Small Groups : A Review Of The Literature Since 1985, Nicki Mckenna Jan 1999

Therapeutic Factors In Small Groups : A Review Of The Literature Since 1985, Nicki Mckenna

Theses : Honours

This article reviews 23 studies post 1985 that measure therapeutic factors. In particular, the current review investigates whether research post 1985 has addressed the specific areas identified by Bloch and Crouch, ( 1985) and Butler and Fuhriman (1983) as needing further investigation. Areas of study under investigation are (i) behavioral evidence for therapeutic factors. (ii) the relationship between therapeutic factors and treatment outcome, (iii) the relationship between therapeutic factors and individual differences, (iv) the association between therapeutic factors conditions of change and techniques. Studies reviewed were categorized into Inpatient and Outpatient settings. Only one study used observational methods, with the …

The Generalisability Of The Stages And Processes Of Change ; The Concurrent Validity Of The Stages And Processes Of Change, Suzanne E. Marko Jan 1999

The Generalisability Of The Stages And Processes Of Change ; The Concurrent Validity Of The Stages And Processes Of Change, Suzanne E. Marko

Theses : Honours

The transtheorctical model of behaviour change is comprised of the stages of change and the processes of change. The stages explain when change occurs, and the processes outline how change occurs. This model has been influential in clinical practice in the areas of tobacco smoking, alcohol use, eating disorders, and exercise behaviour. This review focuses on the previous literature concerned with the transtheorctical model. Although the model is popular and used to tailor interventions, it has not yet been cross-culturally vaildated, or tested comprehensively in the field of illegal drug use. Further research is necessary to examine whether or not …

Training Methods For Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks, Son Lam Phung Jan 1999

Training Methods For Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks, Son Lam Phung

Theses : Honours

This project investigates a new class of high-order neural networks called shunting inhibitory artificial neural networks (SIANN's) and their training methods. SIANN's are biologically inspired neural networks whose dynamics are governed by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations. The interactions among neurons are mediated via a nonlinear mechanism called shunting inhibition, which allows the neurons to operate as adaptive nonlinear filters. The project's main objective is to devise training methods, based on error backpropagation type of algorithms, which would allow SIANNs to be trained to perform feature extraction for classification and nonlinear regression tasks. The training algorithms developed will …

Internet Resource Management And Pricing, Christopher J. Clark Jan 1999

Internet Resource Management And Pricing, Christopher J. Clark

Theses : Honours

Originally conceived and funded as a research project, the Internet has grown into a commercial, global and integrated service network. This has changed the nature of traffic on the Internet with the increasing use of things like video conferencing and time critical transactions. These forms of Internet usage place high demands on bandwidth. Added to this is the fact that the number of users is increasing at a dramatic rate and shows no signs of slowing. This is leading to a 'tragedy of the commons' where endemic congestion will reduce the value of the Internet to everyone. It also implies …

Avenues Of Communication : The Suburban Press And Globalisation, Shane Hewerdine Jan 1999

Avenues Of Communication : The Suburban Press And Globalisation, Shane Hewerdine

Theses : Honours

Over the past two decades there has been an increasing amount of attention within academia, regarding the issue of globalisalion, within all disciplines. Cultural studies in particular have speculated upon the effects of globalistion that will potentially affect all of the diverse cultures and societies throughout the world For the most part the concenus amongst cultural critiques is that globalisation will adversely affect localised communities and cultures. The principle argument has been that local cultural and societal tenets, that constitute unique identities and senses of community, will be subsumed by a homogenised global culture largely produced by American cultural and …

The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (Epa) : Its Structure, Functions And Performance 1971-1996, Vincent Cusack Jan 1999

The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (Epa) : Its Structure, Functions And Performance 1971-1996, Vincent Cusack

Theses : Honours

This study examines the effectiveness of the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), from its inception in 1971 to 1996. While environmental concerns have risen considerably in recent times, environmental awareness can be traced back to early historical beginnings. Yet, despite this initial awareness it took some time before environmental problems permeated the public consciousness, to occupy the political agenda. However, in the early 1970s, governments throughout the First World responded to research and heightened awareness of environmental concerns, with specific legislation to protect the environment. A common feature of the legislation, was the provision for a main administrative body …

The Defendant And The Criminal Trial : Does Providing Knowledge About The Criminal Justice System Help?, Daniel B. Hurley Jan 1999

The Defendant And The Criminal Trial : Does Providing Knowledge About The Criminal Justice System Help?, Daniel B. Hurley

Theses : Honours

Defendants are required to make many decisions during their encounter with the criminal justice system (i.e., plea, venue, representation, bail and, possibly, appeal). The assumption exists that defendants possess sufficient organizational and pragmatic knowledge of the system to make these decisions. However, research suggests that many defendants lack sufficient knowledge of the criminal justice system to make these decisions, and that this lack of knowledge may lead to feelings of anxiety. As a consequence of these findings, many defendants may be unable to effectively participate in the criminal justice system. By way of remedying this situation, it has been argued …

Stories Of School : Perspectives Of The Low Literate Adult, Anne Shipway Jan 1999

Stories Of School : Perspectives Of The Low Literate Adult, Anne Shipway

Theses : Honours

This thesis explores the school experiences of low literate adults through their perspective recognising that the 'voice' of the low literate adult is absent from the arena of adult literacy research. Stories are co-constructed by the participant and the researcher with particular emphasis on mai1uaining the voice of the research participant. Through this thesis I argue that the inclusion of the low literate adults perspective is an essential element in gaining a deeper understanding of themes and issues which impact on literacy attainment.

Smoking : An Exploration Of Message Framing And Death Anxiety, Ian James Parker Jan 1999

Smoking : An Exploration Of Message Framing And Death Anxiety, Ian James Parker

Theses : Honours

The focus of this thesis is the replication and extension of research by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) who found that how a message is worded or framed can significantly affect decisional choice. Tversky and Kahneman (1981) demonstrated that a message framed in terms of "lives saved" was favoured over one which read "lives lost" notwithstanding that the net sum of survivors was equal in both instances. The authors referred to the effects of message framing on decision making as Prospect Theory. This thesis studied Tversky and Kahneman's (1981) research applied to the issue of smoking. The preference for a positive …

Moving To Western Australia : Decision Making Processes Of Migrants From The United Kingdom, Lynne Cohen Jan 1999

Moving To Western Australia : Decision Making Processes Of Migrants From The United Kingdom, Lynne Cohen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

International migration has assumed a new importance during the last few decades due to the volume and increase of population movement. Two important questions are relevant to the migration process. The person has to make the decision to move and to select a place of destination. In this thesis a series of studies designed to examine the factors that led to the consideration of leaving and the attributes which contributed to the choice of destination are presented. This research begins by adopting suggestions proposed by Jahoda (1981) to ask questions and thereby increase the knowledge base. The methodological framework of …

A Case Study Of Pressure Group Activity In Western Australia: Medical Care Of The Dying Bill (1995), Hazel Jane Sims Jan 1999

A Case Study Of Pressure Group Activity In Western Australia: Medical Care Of The Dying Bill (1995), Hazel Jane Sims

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

When the Australian Labor Party member for Kalgoorlie, Ian Taylor, presented his Private Member's Bill - the Medical Care of the Dying Bill (1995), he laid the foundation for this thesis. Mr Taylor introduced his Bill to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly on 28 March 1995. The Bill codified the terminally ill patient's right to refuse medical treatment, which clarified common law. This thesis attempts to overcome the dearth of literature in Western Australian lobbying concerning conscience-vote issues. It also identifies the key issues in understanding political lobbying, the form of pressure group activity that takes place and why certain …

The Effect Of Nursing Interventions On Thermoregulation And Neuromotor Function In Very Low Birthweight Infants, Leanne Monterosso Jan 1999

The Effect Of Nursing Interventions On Thermoregulation And Neuromotor Function In Very Low Birthweight Infants, Leanne Monterosso

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The prone position is used routinely in neonatal intensive care units worldwide in the nursing of preterm infants because of reported beneficial psychological effects This position can, however, lead to development of flattened posture very low birthweight (VLBW) infants and contributes to both short and longer term implications for functional motor development of upper and lower extremities. To date limited research has been undertaken to investigate methods of reducing flattened posture and its related negative outcomes temperature instability is also a problem for VLBW infants and no nappy exists that meets postural size and thermoregulation requirements. The purpose of this …

Confrontation And Identity In The Fiction Of J.M. Coetzee, Dawn Grieve Jan 1999

Confrontation And Identity In The Fiction Of J.M. Coetzee, Dawn Grieve

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is an examination of the fictional works of J.M. Coetzee to date. By focusing my gaze upon either the lack of encounter or the encounters between the 'Self' and the 'Other', I explore the relationship between confrontation and the fluid formation and erosion of identity. This exploration takes place against a dual background: the history of the apartheid government in South Africa, the legacy of oppression and the post-apartheid opportunities and challenges; and Coetzee's own acknowledgement of complicity with the past and commitment to a reconciled future. This study not only examines a broad range of criticism on …

Digital Imaging: Creating New Realities, Mark Datodi Jan 1999

Digital Imaging: Creating New Realities, Mark Datodi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

More and more it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern photo reality from digital reality. Digital imagery is revolutionising photography and challenging preconceived notions of this art form. Over the years, photography has been viewed metaphorically as a window on the world and on the past. No longer however, is the creation of photographic imagery reliant upon its intrinsic relationship with reality. Using computer technology original photographic material can be altered, manipulated and seamlessly combined with other fictional imagery without obvious detection and with relative ease. The proliferation of digital imaging is producing two apparent crises for photography. The first …

Does Expert Evidence Pertaining To Battered Woman Syndrome Influence Juror Verdicts?, Clare E. Shannon Jan 1999

Does Expert Evidence Pertaining To Battered Woman Syndrome Influence Juror Verdicts?, Clare E. Shannon

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research investigated whether expert evidence pertaining to Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) influences juror verdicts the legal requirements of self defence (imminence, proportionality and an attempt to retreat from the situation) are generally not met in cases where battered women kill their partner: The killings do not immediately follow the attack, the force used is not proportionate to the attack and there is often no previous attempt to retreat from the situation. BWS expert psychological evidence has been admitted by Australian Courts to provide jurors with an alternative perspective for determining whether a woman's actions were reasonable in the given …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Nutrition education is one of the strategies that addresses high levels of malnutrition in the world. Since independence in 1963. Kenya has instituted socio-economic, food security, nutrition and health policies to improve the nutrition and quality of life of it's people. In spite of these policies, one third of the Kenyan population is undernourished. This study was planned to establish how nutrition education is conducted in the Ministry of Health Thika District through a rural child growth monitoring program and to generate and reflect on women's participation in decision making in the program. Open-ended interviews were conducted with 21 women …

Impacts Of Agricultural Transformation On The Principal Karstic Regions Of France, Jean Nicod, Jean-Noël Salomon Jan 1999

Impacts Of Agricultural Transformation On The Principal Karstic Regions Of France, Jean Nicod, Jean-Noël Salomon

International Journal of Speleology

The recent extension of intensive agriculture on the karst plateaus has caused different types of impact: soil management, generalised and/or localised pollution. Yet paradoxically rural depopulation can also have negative impacts, which largely depend on the characteristics and the hydrological function of the different karst environments. They are often negative, particularly as far as the water quality is concerned, which is why protection measures are undertaken, either in a defined area for a catchment, or in the framework of regional parks. But this is not always the case, so it is appropriate to analyse the problem of karst pollution as …

Serving Grief: Catholic Women And The Funeral Dinner, Valerie Ann Jones Jan 1999

Serving Grief: Catholic Women And The Funeral Dinner, Valerie Ann Jones

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to learn what the activity involved in a Roman Catholic funeral dinner meant to the women who prepared and served it. This study examined the intersection between women's socialization, voluntarism, and religion in order to develop an understanding of the women's motivations as well as to clarify how they see their work and their role in this work. In this study I summarized the interviews with 10 women and participated in two funeral dinners. I also actively participated in the Church's women's group during and after my field research. The observations together with …
