Urban Aboriginal Children In Sport: Experiences, Perceptions And Sense Of Self, Cheryl S. Kickett-Tucker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study was to describe the sense of self for a group of urban Western Australian Aboriginal children through analysing their perspectives and experiences in school sport and physical education. A symbolic interaction inquiry paradigm complemented with qualitative data collection methods was utilised. Informal conversational interviews and nonparticipant observations were employed. Interviews were conducted with participants and those whom they reported as their significant others. Participants were also observed in the school sport setting during physical education classes and intra and inter school sport competitions. Eight Western Australian Aboriginal children who resided in an urban suburb of …

Barbadian Teachers' Personal Practical Knowledge About Advocated Pedagogic Practices Used In The Education Of The Under-Fives, Sonja M. Anderson Jan 1999

Barbadian Teachers' Personal Practical Knowledge About Advocated Pedagogic Practices Used In The Education Of The Under-Fives, Sonja M. Anderson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigated the personal practical knowledge of twenty-one Barbadian teachers in relation to a range of pedagogic practices advocated for use in the education of children under five years of age. The investigation of this knowledge was based on an interpretative perspective. The conceptual underpinning was framed by Personal Construct Psychology (Kelly, 1995), and its methodology, the repertory grid technique. The grid was formulated and used in a sample of schools with under-fives. Findings were clarified, confirmed and elaborated by the use of in-depth interviews conducted with teachers in their classroom settings. The findings revealed that teachers construed pedagogic …

Film Dialogue Translation And The Intonation Unit : Towards Equivalent Effect In English And Chinese, Jian Li Jan 1999

Film Dialogue Translation And The Intonation Unit : Towards Equivalent Effect In English And Chinese, Jian Li

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis proposes a new approach to film dialogue translation (FDT) with special reference to the translation process and quality of English-to-Chinese dubbing. In response to the persistent translation failures that led to widespread criticism of dubbed films and TV plays in China for their artificial 'translation talk', this study provides a pragmatic methodology derived from the integration of the theories and analytical systems of information flow in the tradition of the functionalist approach to speech and writing with the relevant theoretical and empirical findings from TS and other related branches of linguistics. It has developed and validated a translation …

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov Jan 1999

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov

Theses : Honours

Demographic data on the immunization status of Australia indicates that Western Australia has relatively low immunization coverage for whooping cough. Australian quantitative studies have been carried out on parental attitudes in Australia towards immunization, but there has been no analysis of parents' reasons for their decisions. This study identified the key issues that influenced the decisions made by the target group of parents and explored their decision-making in more depth. The data from this study could also be used to supplement the information currently available to health workers. Eight participants with children between the ages of 2 months and 6 …

Evaluating Oral Histories For Restoration Ecology, Margaret Robertson Jan 1999

Evaluating Oral Histories For Restoration Ecology, Margaret Robertson

Theses : Honours

Significant ecological restoration is required in the agricultural regions of south-western Australia. Environmental history, including local knowledge based on long-term observation of the biophysical environment, can help guide this process. Scientists already use local anecdotal information because other information sources are absent or too recent, yet they are often skeptical of its veracity. This study focused on whether environmental oral histories can be evaluated for factual accuracy and their capacity to be useful in the restoration process. Some of the complexities associated with linking environmental histories with restoration ecology, and the role played by oral histories in establishing the link …

The Community Reinvestment Act: Questionable Premises And Perverse Incentives, Keith N. Hylton, Vincent D. Rougeau

Faculty Scholarship

Having just passed the twentieth anniversary of the enactment of the Community Reinvestment Act I ("CRA" or "Act"), this is an appropriate time to take stock of the effectiveness of the legislation and to consider whether it continues to be useful as a tool for addressing the problems of neighborhood decline and discrimination in the lending market. Although discrimination in lending and the decline of certain inner-city neighborhoods is a problem that the CRA has not been able to solve, most observers would agree that the situation has improved since the mid-1970s. 2 In particular, there has been notable progress …

Toward A Formative Project Of Securing Freedom And Equality, Linda C. Mcclain Jan 1999

Toward A Formative Project Of Securing Freedom And Equality, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

This Symposium offers an occasion to pursue two important tasks: (1) identifying normative and constitutional foundations for an affimnative governmental responsibility to engage in a "formative project" that would foster persons' capacities for democratic and personal self-government;' and (2) exploring the mix of normative and empirical inquiries necessary to shape the proper goals and parameters of such a project. These tasks are relevant to my larger project of attempting to develop a synthetic, or feminist and liberal, normative account of rights, responsibilities, and governmental promotion of good, self-governing lives.2 That account argues for governmental responsibility to foster the preconditions for …

Trends In The Regulation Of Investment Companies And Investment Advisers, Tamar Frankel Jan 1999

Trends In The Regulation Of Investment Companies And Investment Advisers, Tamar Frankel

Faculty Scholarship

Statutes, rules and enforcement actions are tea leaves we can read to predict future trends of mutual fund regulation. While statutes and rules are specific, the trends they signify are far more speculative. This Essay engages in such speculation to envision the long-term implications of the recent new N- 1A disclosure form, I the plain English Rule,2 and the profile. 3 More generally, the Essay speculates on future trends in Securities and Exchange Commission ("Commission") enforcement, and predicts a continued and stronger use of informal enforcement by the Commission.

Germeshausen Center for the Law of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the PTC Research Foundation, both of which are headquartered at FPLC, held its Seventh Biennial Intellectual Property System Major Problems Conference. While noteworthy for a broadening in scope over previous conferences - from "patent system major problems" to "intellectual property system major problems" - the seventh biennial conference continues a tradition of scholarship and discussion begun in 1987 by former FPLC professor Homer O. Blair.

The discussions in Professor Blair's inaugural major problems conference focused …

Medical Ethics And Human Rights: Legacies Of Nuremberg, George J. Annas, Michael A. Grodin Jan 1999

Medical Ethics And Human Rights: Legacies Of Nuremberg, George J. Annas, Michael A. Grodin

Faculty Scholarship

Many of our most important human rights documents are the product of the world's horror during the carnage of World War II. The broadest and most powerful declaration of human rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was adopted by the membership of the new United Nations in 1948. But there are also much more specific statements of the world's aspirations for all of its inhabitants. August 1997 marked the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the trial of Nazi physicians at Nuremberg, a trial which has been variously designated as the "Doctors' Trial" and the "Medical Case."2 In …

Contesting Government's Financial Interest In Drug Cases, Eric D. Blumenson, Eva Nilsen Jan 1999

Contesting Government's Financial Interest In Drug Cases, Eric D. Blumenson, Eva Nilsen

Faculty Scholarship

In 1984, the civil asset forfeiture law was amended to allow the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and state law enforcement agencies to retain many of the "drug-related assets" they seize for their own law enforcement purposes. Under this amendment, some local law enforcement agencies have managed to double or triple their appropriated budgets by targeting such assets. As former Attorney General Richard Thornburgh has noted, "it's now possible for a drug dealer to serve time in a forfeiture-financed prison after being arrested by agents driving a forfeiture-provided automobile while working in a forfeiture-funded sting operation." The American people, however, …

Inflammatory Proteins In Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Nikolaeva Jan 1999

Inflammatory Proteins In Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Nikolaeva

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically characterized by progressive mental decline. The pathomorphology of AD includes the accumulation of abnormal filaments, known as neurofibrillary tangles or NFT, within the nerve cells and of extracellular deposits of amyloid fibers surrounded by dystrophic neurites that form senile plaques. Many inflammatory proteins have been found in association with lesions in AD brain, but the role of the inflammatory reactions in AD pathogenesis is not known. The goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between the inflammatory and neuropathological changes in AD brain through examining the density of lesions immunoreactive for inflammatory proteins …

Physician Attitudes Toward Clinical Health Psychologists In Medical Settings, Katherine T. Kelly Jan 1999

Physician Attitudes Toward Clinical Health Psychologists In Medical Settings, Katherine T. Kelly

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary healthcare system is noted to be the de facto mental health system in the United States” (Stroshal, 1996). Despite this fact, patients typically do not receive the appropriate behavioral treatment to ameliorate their pain and suffering (Resnick & Rozensky, 1996). The present study attempted to investigate physicians' attitudes toward psychologists in medical settings with regard to whether these attitudes are influenced by (a) levels of medically/psychologically based medical conditions, (b) level of resident training, (c) level of exposure to psychological services, and (d) level of emphasis on psychological training within the medical schools. Thirty-nine female and forty-five male …

The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Cognitions Related To Depression, Julia M. Lash Jan 1999

The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Cognitions Related To Depression, Julia M. Lash

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exercise is known to improve mood and reduce depression. However, the mechanism(s) responsible for the antidepressent effects of exercise are not known. Cognitive therapy, one of the most effective psychological treatments of depression, is based on the assumption that changes in a person's negative thoughts will result in a remission of depression. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar change in cognitions might occur with exercise. Self-report measures of mood (Profile of Mood States and Visual Analog Mood Scale) and depressive cognitions (Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire, Beck Self-Concept Test and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale) were measured before and …

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.

Supervisory/Non-Supervisory Mentoring In The Public Sector : Outcomes For Protégé Development, Richard Douglas Dunstan James

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study was to examine the provision of mentoring functions, specifically providing an analysis of the contrast between those functions provided to protégés by both mentors and supervisors. Thus, the study focused on two relationships maintained by the subordinate: the relationship with their supervisor and that with their mentor. Research dealing with the functions mentors are perceived to provide to the protégé examined extensively. Additionally, research which indicates that supervisors may perform mentoring functions is presented. This includes Situational Leadership Theory, Leader member Exchange and Transformational and Transactional Leadership. The functions provided by mentors and elaborated in …

Some Determinants Of Success And Failure In First-Year University Business Units At Private Colleges, Clive P. Oliver Jan 1999

Some Determinants Of Success And Failure In First-Year University Business Units At Private Colleges, Clive P. Oliver

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigates some of the determinates of academic success and failure (and dropout) from first year university level Business units at two private business colleges in Perth, Western Australia. Private business colleges are convenient vehicles for international and Western Australian students who do not possess adequate academic assessments for direct entry into university, and for students who might benefit from an enhanced pastoral support system, in the transition from secondary education to tertiary education. The study is important to private providers and to universities who are trying to help students succeed at university. The study utilises a model of …

Perceptions Of Web Site Design Characteristics: A Malaysian/Australian Comparison, R. Laupase Jan 1999

Perceptions Of Web Site Design Characteristics: A Malaysian/Australian Comparison, R. Laupase

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study compared the perceptions of Malaysians, representing Asian culture, and Australians, representing Western culture, for four Web design characteristics (atmospherics, news stories, signs, products and services), as part of the Integrated Internet Marketing model. Under controlled laboratory conditions, two groupings of thirty subjects evaluated eight Web sites in the retail and services sectors located equally in Malaysia and Australia. This study hypothesised that the predominant culture would not be generalised to another culture. Significant differences found for Web design characteristics were typically for one site only and not across all sites. In other words, consistent differences did not eventuate. …

Secondary Students' Skills Of Measuring Liquid Volume And Understanding Of Uncertainty Of Data, Wayne M. Keady Jan 1999

Secondary Students' Skills Of Measuring Liquid Volume And Understanding Of Uncertainty Of Data, Wayne M. Keady

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research is a detailed study of students' skills of measuring liquid volume, the decisions they make when planning to collect data and whilst collecting data, and the extent to which they understand the uncertainty associated with the data they collected. These skills and understandings are at the heart of scientific literacy (Duggan & Gall, 1996a). The introduction of the Working Scientifically strand in the Australian national curriculum framework and profile of learning outcome statements for science (Australian Education Council, 1994) illustrates the increased emphasis placed in curriculum documents on investigation skills and scientific literacy. The profile of outcome statements …

It was hypothesized that there …

Disruptive Behaviour In Nursing Home Residents: A Study Of Some Predisposing Factors, Ian F. Johnston Jan 1999

Disruptive Behaviour In Nursing Home Residents: A Study Of Some Predisposing Factors, Ian F. Johnston

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Behaviour disorders are common among nursing home residents and the management of these problems is difficult and emotionally taxing for caregivers. Although widespread acknowledgment of the problem exists amongst those caring for the elderly, there has, until recently, been little formal investigation of these disorders in any systematic degree. This study investigated 63 nursing home residents (22 males and 41 females) in two primary diagnostic categories; those with vascular dementia and those with dementia due to other causes, primarily Alzheimer's disease. A review of the literature suggested that the nature and frequency of disruptive behaviour differed across these two prevalent …
