The Development Of Secretarial And Administrative Support Staff: Influential Factors In The Identification Of Need, Murray Jack Lovell
The Development Of Secretarial And Administrative Support Staff: Influential Factors In The Identification Of Need, Murray Jack Lovell
Plymouth Business School Theses
Radical advances in microelectronics applications during the 1970's precipitated rapid developments in new office technology which was held to threaten the very existence of the traditional secretarial task role. Many contemporary commentators conceived a correlative link between the emergence of the new technology and the displacement of administrative support staff, whilst others predicted that a form of "Taylorism" was about to invade the office environment with all manner of dehumanising connotations. The reality proved somewhat different and, far from eradicating the role of the secretary or reducing it to assembly-line proportions, the technology helped to facilitate the flattening of organisational …
Theoretical Investigation Of The Evaporation Heat Transfer Cofficient Of Refrigerant R-134a In A Plate Heat Exchanger, Vincent Donowski
Theoretical Investigation Of The Evaporation Heat Transfer Cofficient Of Refrigerant R-134a In A Plate Heat Exchanger, Vincent Donowski
Theses
The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of refrigerant R-134a flowing in a plate heat exchanger is investigated analytically in this study. With the introduction of new HFC refrigerants to replace CFC refrigerants, the understanding and modeling of heat transfer coefficient characteristics is important in designing more efficient evaporators for refrigeration and air conditioning applications. In the present work experimental data for two-phase evaporation heat transfer of refrigerant R-134a in a plate heat exchanger (Yan and Lin, 1999b) is compared with relevant published correlations (Yan and Lin, 1999b; Kandlikar, 1991) in order to explore a proposed correlation scheme to best predict the …
Xerox Early Customer Engagement Process And Documentation, Carmen Bottini
Xerox Early Customer Engagement Process And Documentation, Carmen Bottini
Theses
This paper focused on the Early Customer Engagement (ECE/ECAT) activity that should be utilized for every new product that Xerox develops. ECE is the practice of allowing a few of Xerox more "friendly" accounts to test a product before it launched to the general public. Although the ECE practice has been in utilized for some time, a standardized process and corresponding documentation did not exist. Because of this, there has been ECE Tests that have received unfavorable grades from participants even though the actual Xerox product was satisfactory. The use of this documentation will allow Xerox to streamline the activity …
The Human Race, Alex Gurevich
The Human Race, Alex Gurevich
Theses
To tell a story and to tell it well is a paramount function in human society. Whether the desired outcome is to engage, educate, or entertain the viewer the goal is the same. Through story we endeavor to learn something more about ourselves and hopefully show others something new within themselves. As the old adage goes, "Give a man a fish you feed him for a day. Teach that man how to fish you feed him for a lifetime." One could simply give that hungry man a pole, a line, a hook, and a worm and give him directions on …
Packaging Development Process For A Wholesale Club Pack Of Flea And Tick Topical Treatment For Dogs, Carol Pregger
Packaging Development Process For A Wholesale Club Pack Of Flea And Tick Topical Treatment For Dogs, Carol Pregger
Theses
The Hartz Mountain Packaging Development Department was presented with the challenge of designing a warehouse club package system for the company's One-Spot flea and tick topical treatment product, to take the place of the competitor's flea and tick treatment product sold in some warehouse clubs. In order to properly service the warehouse club market and better understand the reasoning behind the unique package configurations typically sold in that environment, Hartz Packaging Engineering undertook a study of the background, history and current trends of the club market. This information, along with observations gathered from numerous visits to various club locations, was …

The Validity Of Selected Draw-A-Person Test Classifying Criteria Among Homosexual And Non Homosexual Males., Joel Von Ornsteiner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the validity of Machover's(1949)interpretation that attention to both the hips and buttocks drawn by males subjects in their first male Draw-A-Person Test(DAP) or the drawing of a female figure first are significant indicators of male homosexuality. The hypothesis was that the frequency of these homosexual indicators among non-instituted homosexuals indicators among non-instituted homosexuals would be significantly higher(P = < .05) than the male heterosexual group. One hundred homosexual and 100 heterosexual males were selected from groups of volunteers from two universities, one bookstore and a community center in the New York area. The subjects were administered a DAP test in booklet format and a questionnaire. The drawings were classified for homosexual indicators blindly and independently by three judges who were trained in the use of the Machover interpretation of the DAP. Chi square analyses were calculated for the frequency of hips and buttocks and for the drawing of a female figure first and no significant differences between the self identified homosexual and heterosexual male groups in the expected direction were found. It was concluded that the lack of any significant difference between the scores of the homosexual and heterosexual males in this study casts considerable doubt on the validity of the male homosexual interpretations explored.Speculations were made concerning the widely discrepant results from past studies and this investigation. The majority of the past research had been conducted within institutional settings and there have been cultural changes over the last fifty years in both psychology and society's tolerance for the male homosexual.Unlike any previous DAP study,one-hundred urban homosexual and one-hundred heterosexual males were randomly selected. This researcher cautions that the DAP test should be interpreted with other available information, and results based on its independent use are viewed with much skepticism.Implications for future research were discussed.

Voiding Dysfunction And Detrusor Instability After The Colposuspension Operation For Genuine Stress Incontinence, Luigi Bombieri
Voiding Dysfunction And Detrusor Instability After The Colposuspension Operation For Genuine Stress Incontinence, Luigi Bombieri
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Colposuspension is an effective treatment for genuine stress incontinence. Continence is restored by positioning the bladder neck in a fixed and elevated retro-pubic position. Despite a high success rate of up to 90%, post-operative complications occur which may have an adverse effect on quality of life. Voiding difficulties develop in 0-43% of patients and detrusor instability in 2- 25%. This considerable variability is due to differences in definition, the timing of assessment, patient selection, and probably also in surgical technique. The natural history of these complications is not clearly known due to the lack of prospective follow-up studies. There is …

Introduction: Hong Kong After The Reversion: In Search Of A Post‐Colonial Order, Tuck Hong James Tang
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The political handover of Hong Kong on 1 July 1997 turned out to be a non-eventwith little political drama. Emotions ran high when the Union Jack was loweredand was replaced by the Chinese national flag (wuxing hongqi), peacefully endingover one and a half centuries of British colonial rule in Hong Kong. The handovertook place smoothly, despite the heavy rain, without political and social turbulence. The Sino-British disagreement over the abolition of the Legislative Council marredthe occasion, but the swearing-in of a pro-Beijing Provisional Legislative Councilwas largely accepted as a fait accompli.

No More Secrets?: Policy Implications Of Commercial Remote Sensing Satellites, Ann Florini, Yahya A. Dehqanzada
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Ever since the earliest satellites and astronauts started taking pictures of the Earth from space nearly four decades ago, those images have inspired excitement, introspection, and, often, fear. Like all information, satellite imagery is in itself neutral. But satellite imagery is a particularly powerful sort of information, showing both comprehensive vistas and surprising detail. Its benefits can be immense—but so can its costs. The same images that remind us that we all share a fragile planet also enable those who have the images to more accurately aim their weapons at adversaries near and far.
Paternalism: A Deweyan Perspective, Sor-Hoon Tan
Paternalism: A Deweyan Perspective, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
“No, dear, you must not eat the soap; it’s not good for you.” Well-intentioned interference frustrates our desires even in the happiest childhood. Less happy is the perpetual state of adolescent rebellion against apparently arbitrary and unreasonable curtailments of one’s freedom, too frequently justified by the familiar refrain “It’s for your own good” adding insult to injury. Such interference does not necessarily cease with the eagerly awaited entry into adulthood. Not only parents are guilty of it; the state also engages in such interference. Can paternalism where one person deliberately interferes with another for the latter’s own good be morally …

The Asian Way And Modern Liberalism: A Hayekian Perspective, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
F.A. Hayek was a European economist and socialphilosopher who first came to scholarly prominencefor his work on trade cycles and his disagreementswith John Maynard Keynes; and who earned widerintellectual notice (if not notoriety) for hispolemics warning of the threat to westerncivilisation posed by modern socialism. Hiseconomic writings in the 1930s aimed, more than anything, at exposing the flawsand contradictions in socialism as aneconomic system. His polemic, The Roadto Serfdom, published in 1944 with adedication to ‘The Socialists of All Parties’,was an attempt to turn around the thinkingof western policy-makers he thought tooeasily seduced by the claims of centraleconomic planning. And his …

The Construction And Experience Of Nature: Perspectives Of Urban Youths, Lily Kong, Belinda Yuen, Navjot S. Sodhi, Clive Briffett
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper, we explore the ways in which young people in a highly urbanised setting experience and develop constructions of nature. We do so by using Singapore as our case study, an Asian context in which urbanisation is total (Singapore's population is totally urbanised), Based on focus group discussions, we conclude that young Singaporeans have little interest in and affinity for nature. This stems from a few factors: growing up in a highly urban environment in which contact with nature is limited; over-protective parents of two-children families who worry about the 'dangers' their children are exposed to when playing …
Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan
Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This essay looks to the complex intercultural relations of China and Korea to highlight two important issues in political theory and international relations: the transnational nature of world politics and the limits of analytical binaries such as East‐West and tradition‐modernity. Discussions of international politics in East Asia characteristically address issues of security and development studies. More recently, Confucianism has been mobilized as part of the clash of civilizations of Asia with the West. This essay will consider how cultural boundaries are negotiated within the region via an analysis of the workings of the transnational discourse of Confucianism in the construction …

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Edward Alsworth Ross (Dec. 12, 1866 - July 22, 1951), sociologist and writer, was born in Virden, Illinois, the son of William Carpenter Ross, a farmer, and Rachel Alsworth, a school teacher. Orphaned by his mother’s and father’s deaths (1874 and 1876, respectively), Ross was sheltered in turn by three Iowa farm families. Of the latter, Ross regarded Mary Beach as his foster mother. Alexander Campbell, Ross’ lawyer guardian, shepherded his inheritance, thereby providing ample funds for his schooling.

Multiple Perspectives On Multimedia In The Large Lecture, Helen A. Moore, Timothy D. Pippert
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Students, graduate instructors and the classroom professor responded in journals, on objective tests, in focus groups and on survey questionnaires to the effects of computer media in four large lecture classes. Graduate instructors and students responded in focus groups to multimedia technology with consistent themes, including enhancement of cognitive strategies (note taking and organization of ideas) and motivation. However, students also expressed distancing from the instructor. Student achievement outcomes using pre- and post-test scores showed no differences across two experimental applications of multimedia presentations: static and dynamic. Discussion of findings emphasizes the need to balance considerations of resource scarcity and …

An Analysis Of Differences Among Males Choosing A Traditional As Opposed To Non -Traditional Career, Scott David Struck
An Analysis Of Differences Among Males Choosing A Traditional As Opposed To Non -Traditional Career, Scott David Struck
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The question of how men entering nontraditional careers (i.e. nursing), differ from men entering a more traditional career (i.e. technology) has not been adequately examined. Career decision-making self-efficacy, sex role identity, age, and the degree of influence on career choice of role models, perceived income, and the importance of career advancement, was examined among male nursing (n = 80) as opposed to male technology majors (n = 72). Career related self-efficacy was measured using the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale (CDMSE; Taylor & Betz, 1983), while the Bem Sex Role Inventory-Short Form (BSRI-SF; Bem, 1981) was used to measure sex role …
Capital Investment Decisions Of Large Industrial Firms In Major European Countries, Faith Yilmaz
Capital Investment Decisions Of Large Industrial Firms In Major European Countries, Faith Yilmaz
Plymouth Business School Theses
Using large-company panel data, this thesis empirically analyses investment decisions in major European countries. We particularly concentrate on three issues: the taxation of capital in the EU, the role of agency costs of debt on investment decisions, and the empirical analyses of the investment-uncertainty relationship. First, based on a dynamic system in capital and Tobin's q ratio, some simplified analytical results are derived to simulate various tax policy effects on investment. Also, for a single investment project, a model is developed to consider jointly the role of uncertainty and irreversibility in the taxation of capital. The simulation results cast doubt …
Impact Of Egypt's Economic Reform Programme On The Stock Market Performance, Mohammed Moustafa A. Omran
Impact Of Egypt's Economic Reform Programme On The Stock Market Performance, Mohammed Moustafa A. Omran
Plymouth Business School Theses
The objective of this thesis is to highlight the Egyptian experiment concerning its economic reform programme, and to determine whether this programme has affected Egypt's stock market performance. Using 18 years of data, which covered the period 1980/8 1 to 1997/98 and incorporates time periods prior to and after adopting the economic reform programme, the thesis empirically investigates three main issues. Firstly, there is an examination of whether the Egyptian government succeeded in implementing its economic reform programme by looking to the main economic indicators: nominal interest rates, real interest rates, the inflation rate, exchange rate stability, the real GDP …
An Examination Of The Antecedents To Small And Medium Enterprise Co-Operation, And Their Effect On Network Propensity And Behaviour., John White
Plymouth Business School Theses
Business co-operation in the small firm sector has in recent years been the beneficiary of both considerable academic debate and public sector funding for its facilitation. This thesis reviews the pertinent literature in the fields of business co-operation, trust, commitment and personality psychology. The limitations of existing networking - co-operation SME research are identified, and in particular the dearth of empirical based research. Where such research exists, no attempt is made to isolate variables which might determine whether individuals are likely to co-operate with others, and / or the likely success of their co-operative activities. As a means of addressing …

Effects Of Ozonation On Cod Elimination Of Substituted Aromatic Compounds In Aqueus Solution, Şermi̇n Gül, Osman Seri̇ndağ, Hami̇t Boztepe
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The chemical oxygen demand (COD) change of various substituted aromatic compounds, namely benzoic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, sulfanilic acid, nitro benzene, resorcinol, p-cresol, o- cresol, o-toluidine, aniline and 8-hydroxyquinoline were investigated at ozone doses of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg O_{3}\cdotmin^{-1}, respectively. Percent COD removal of initial compounds after ozonation was compared with reported biodegradation results. The pH change and percent removal of selected compounds were also evaluated in ozone does of 20 mg O_{3}\cdotmin^{-1} up to 80 min. ozonation. The results showed that high ozone doses are needed to obtain better elimination of initial compounds and also …
Reaction Mechanism And Kinetics Of Aqueous Solutions Of Primary And Secondary Alkanolamines And Carbon Dioxide, Olgac Bavbek, Erdoğan Alper
Reaction Mechanism And Kinetics Of Aqueous Solutions Of Primary And Secondary Alkanolamines And Carbon Dioxide, Olgac Bavbek, Erdoğan Alper
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The mechanism and kinetics of the reaction between aqueous solutions of CO_2 and the alkanolamines 1-amino-2-propanol, 3-amino-1-propanol,2-methyl aminoethanol and 2-ethyl aminoethanol were investigated using a stopped flow technique. It was found that the reaction orders according to power law kinetics were between 1.1 and 2.0, depending on the alkanolamine and the concentration ranges investigated. This fractional order was therefore considered to be further evidence that carbamate formation takes place according to a zwitterion mechanism rather than a one-step reaction. The kinetic rate parameters for these alkanolamines were evaluated from experimental data at 303 K according to this mechanism.
