The Status Of High School Scheduling In Illinois, Donald G. Hackmann Jan 1999

The Status Of High School Scheduling In Illinois, Donald G. Hackmann

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purposes of this descriptive study were to determine the types of scheduling models being used in Illinois high schools, identify scheduling trends, and determine reasons for adopting scheduling changes. The principals of Illinois’ 635 public high schools were surveyed, and a 100% response rate was achieved after two rounds of questionnaires were mailed and telephone surveys were conducted of remaining nonrespondents. Nearly three-fourths of Illinois high schools utilize a traditional daily- period schedule, but trends indicate increasing numbers of schools are adopting or considering block-of-time models. Principals implementing block-of-time schedules noted a variety of reasons for this change, including …

The Relationship Between Culture And Cognitive Style: A Review Of The Evidence And Some Reflections For The Classroom, Joan Thrower Timm

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This column summarizes factors in cultural experience that affect approaches to learning and problem solving. It reviews the evidence over the past thirty years on cognitive style differences in culturally diverse groups in the United States including Asian, African, Latino, and Native Americans and reports recent research findings on the Hmong. Finally, it raises some issues to consider when working with students from different cultural backgrounds.

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, Takehiko Yamato Jan 1999

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, Takehiko Yamato

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies public good provision in the laboratory using the voluntary contribution mechanism, in a cross-cultural experiment conducted in the United States and Japan. Our environment differs from the standard voluntary contribution mechanism because in one treatment, subjects first decide whether or not to participate in providing this public good. This participation decision is conveyed to the other subject prior to the subjects' contribution decisions. We find that only the American data support the evolutionary stable strategy Nash equilibrium predicitons, and that behavior is significantly different across countries. Japanese subjects are more likely to act spitefully in the early …

The Effect Of National Culture On Partner Buyouts In Cross-Border Biotechnology Alliances, Timothy B. Folta, Walter J. Ferrier Jan 1999

The Effect Of National Culture On Partner Buyouts In Cross-Border Biotechnology Alliances, Timothy B. Folta, Walter J. Ferrier

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study examines how national culture influences the likelihood and rate of buyouts amont R&D equity alliances and joint ventures in the biotechnology industry. We hypothesize that the interaction of specific national culture attributes and cultural differences between alliance partners bear upon: a) the amount of endogenous uncertainty surrounding the potential integration of the target firm and b) the marginal rate of learning in hierarchical versus collaborative governance. Applying a competing hazard model to a sample of 173 joint ventures and minority equity collaborations in the biotechnology industry, we found that investing firms from high power distance and high uncertainty …

The Cadbury Committee, Corporate Performance And Top Management Turnover, Jay Dahya, John J. Mcconnell, Nicolaos G. Travlos Jan 1999

The Cadbury Committee, Corporate Performance And Top Management Turnover, Jay Dahya, John J. Mcconnell, Nicolaos G. Travlos

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

In December 1992, the Cadbury Committee published the Code of Best Practice which recommended that boards of publicly-traded UK corporations include at least three outside directors and that the positions of the chairman of the board and chief executive officer not be held by a single individual. The underlying presumption was that these government-sponsored recommendations would lead to enhanced board oversight. As a test of that presumption, we analyze the relation between top management turnover and corporate performance. We find that CEO turnover increased following publications of the Code, that the relationship between CEO turnover and performance was strengthened following …

Sources Of Dispersion In Inflation Forecasts, John A. Carlson, Neven T. Valev Jan 1999

Sources Of Dispersion In Inflation Forecasts, John A. Carlson, Neven T. Valev

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Cross-section dispersion of expected inflation is often explained by differences in information sets across agents, but there is little empirical evidence attesting to that. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether dispersion in consumer forecasts of inflation is generated by factors such as relative price observations, different perceptions of monetary policy, and personal characteristics. We use unique data from Bulgaria that allow us to examine such effects at the micro level.

Endogenous International Technology Spillovers And Biased Technical Change In The Gtap Model, Hans Van Meijl, Frank Van Tongeren Jan 1999

Endogenous International Technology Spillovers And Biased Technical Change In The Gtap Model, Hans Van Meijl, Frank Van Tongeren

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This paper discusses the implementation of embodied international technology spillovers in the GTAP model.

We specify a transmission mechanism for technical knowledge that assumes that knowledge is embodied in traded commodities. The usability of knowledge in the receiving country is dependent on the local absorption capacity (e.g., human capital, knowledge infrastructure) and on structural differences (e.g., factor endowments, climate) between countries.

This concept is illustrated first by modeling spillovers embodied in final products and Hicks-neutral technical change.

The bulk of the paper deals with factor-biased technical change in agriculture, and its international transmission through traded intermediate inputs.

We demonstrate how …

The Self In ‘Fieldwork’: A Methodological Concern, Christie L. Fox, Beverly Stoeltje, Stephen Olbrys Jan 1999

The Self In ‘Fieldwork’: A Methodological Concern, Christie L. Fox, Beverly Stoeltje, Stephen Olbrys

English Faculty Publications

As concepts of reflexivity and postcolonial perspectives have advanced our understandings of the way we represent those we study, they have also introduced a consciousness of the role of the self in research. This article reviews the history of the field of folklore with regard to the method of obtaining data or texts and demonstrates that collecting material contrasts with the practice of conducting research in the field. Pointing to a moment of transition, it shows that theories of folklore had to undergo significant change before methods of research would acknowledge the identity of the fieldworker and its significance.

The Theatrical Strategies Of James Robinson Planché, Paul James Buczkowski Jan 1999

The Theatrical Strategies Of James Robinson Planché, Paul James Buczkowski

Wayne State University Dissertations

The work of James Robinson Planché, prominent in English theater from 1818 to 1856 and closely associated with Eliza Vestris, Charles James Mathews, and J. B. Buckstone, has been all but neglected by scholars. However, examining his career yields a wealth of insight into the social, theatrical, and literary atmosphere of Planché's time as well as into his particular creative processes. In particular, four classifications of his plays merit attention: melodramas, fairy extravaganzas, classical burlesques, and revues. His work has been overlooked largely because the social conditions they reflected are only accessible along very broad lines for many readers. In …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Ideographs In A Community Relations Campaign: The Symbolic Construction Of Eight Mile Road, Michele Anne Najor Jan 1999

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Ideographs In A Community Relations Campaign: The Symbolic Construction Of Eight Mile Road, Michele Anne Najor

Wayne State University Dissertations

Eight Mile Road is a twenty-seven mile stretch of road in southeast Michigan that joins 4.6 million people. To metropolitan Detroiters, however, Eight Mile Road is more than just a roadway or street: it is a racially symbolic marker. Eight Mile Road symbolizes more than two decades of hostility between Detroit and the northern suburbs. Some would even argue that Eight Mile Road separates two worlds: the white from the black, the safe from the unsafe, and the desirable from the undesirable. How did a roadway come to define so much? This study poses the following research questions: (1) How …

Financial Problems Confronting U.S. Medical Schools In An Era Of Expanding Group Care, Charles H. Mcmurray Jan 1999

Financial Problems Confronting U.S. Medical Schools In An Era Of Expanding Group Care, Charles H. Mcmurray

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation shows the impact upon two academic medical centers (AMCs) from the competition from managed care. From fiscally sound and thriving organizations a decade ago, many medical schools are now facing severe money problems. U. S. medical schools derive a large share of their general operating revenues from patient care, through the income of practice plans. Since neither tuition nor research generate sufficient funds to cover medical school costs, income from practice plans is vital. The reason most frequently given for the medical schools' fiscal problems is the penetration by managed care organizations into the markets in which AMCs' …
