Edmund S. Muskie Oral History Collection

Lionel A. “Lal” Lemieux was born in Augusta, Maine on January 23, 1911 to Quebecois immigrant parents. He was the tenth of twelve children, the first of two to graduate from high school, and the only one to attend college. He graduated from Cony High School in 1928 and from Bates College in 1933, majoring in history and government. He also debated under Brooks Quimby, and was a senior when Ed Muskie was a freshman. Evaluating Maximum Likelihood Estimation Methods To Determine The Hurst Coefficient, Christina Marie Kendziorski, J. B. Bassingthwaighte, Peter J. Tonellato Nov 1999

Evaluating Maximum Likelihood Estimation Methods To Determine The Hurst Coefficient, Christina Marie Kendziorski, J. B. Bassingthwaighte, Peter J. Tonellato

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A maximum likelihood estimation method implemented in S-PLUS (S-MLE) to estimate the Hurst coefficient (H) is evaluated. The Hurst coefficient, with 0.5<HS-MLE was developed to estimate H for fractionally differenced (fd) processes. However, in practice it is difficult to distinguish between fd processes and fractional Gaussian noise (fGn) processes. Thus, the method is evaluated for estimating H for both fd and fGn processes. S-MLE gave biased results of H for fGn processes of any length and for fd processes of lengths less than 210. A modified method is proposed to correct for …

Generalized Averages For Solutions Of Two-Point Dirichlet Problems, Philip Korman, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

For very general two-point boundary value problems we show that any positive solution satisfies a certain integral relation. As a consequence we obtain some new uniqueness and multiplicity results.

A Pdz-Interacting Domain In Cftr Is An Apical Membrane Polarization Signal, Bryan D. Moyer, Jerod Denton, Katherine H. Karlson, Donna Reynolds, Shusheng Wang, John E. Mickle, Michael Milewski, Garry R. Cutting, William B. Guggino, Min Li, Bruce A. Stanton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Polarization of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-activated chloride channel, to the apical plasma membrane of epithelial cells is critical for vectorial transport of chloride in a variety of epithelia, including the airway, pancreas, intestine, and kidney. However, the motifs that localize CFTR to the apical membrane are unknown. We report that the last 3 amino acids in the COOH-terminus of CFTR (T-R-L) comprise a PDZ-interacting domain that is required for the polarization of CFTR to the apical plasma membrane in human airway and kidney epithelial cells. In addition, the CFTR mutant, S1455X, which lacks the 26 …

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Fept:Sio2 Granular Thin Films, C.P. Luo, David J. Sellmyer Nov 1999

Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Fept:Sio2 Granular Thin Films, C.P. Luo, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Nanocomposite FePt:SiO2 films have been fabricated by annealing the as-deposited FePt/SiO2 multilayers at temperatures from 450 to 650 °C. These films consist of high-anisotropy tetragonal L10 FePt particles embedded in a SiO2 matrix. The structural and magnetic properties of these films were investigated. We have found that coercivity and grain size are highly dependent on the annealing temperature and SiO2 concentration. Films with coercivities in the range from 2 to 8 kOe and grain sizes of 10 nm or less were obtained. These films have considerable potential as high-density magnetic recording media.

Northwest Tribal Registry--Seattle Indian Health Board Record Linkage Project., J. Bettles, D. Robertson, F.C. Romero, T. Becker, P. Stehr-Green

Native Health Database Full Text

In the last ten years several reports using a variety of health data sets have shown a high proportion of racial misclassification for Northwest American Indians and Alaskan Natives (AI/ANs). The result of this has been an underestimation of the burden of various diseases among Northwest AI/ANs. To address health issues related to misclassification, the Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center has developed the Northwest Tribal Registry (NTR), which contains a demographic data set of 135,060 Northwest AI/ANs, and which can be used for record linkage studies to ascertain accurate disease rates for Northwest AI/ANs.
