All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined whether there were significant differences between male and female counselors-in-training (CITs), at three levels of supervised training experience in preference for supervisor characteristics of attractiveness, expertness, or trustworthiness. The Supervisor Rating Form (Heppner & Handley, 1982), renamed the Supervisor Preference Form for the current study, was used to assess these three dimensions. Participants in the study consisted of 70 females and 28 males who met the inclusion criteria of enrollment in a CACREP-accredited Master's or APA-accredited doctoral program in counselingPsychology, or were interns from an accredited program in an APA-accredited internship. The participants were divided into level …
Inflammatory Proteins In Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Nikolaeva
Inflammatory Proteins In Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Nikolaeva
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is clinically characterized by progressive mental decline. The pathomorphology of AD includes the accumulation of abnormal filaments, known as neurofibrillary tangles or NFT, within the nerve cells and of extracellular deposits of amyloid fibers surrounded by dystrophic neurites that form senile plaques. Many inflammatory proteins have been found in association with lesions in AD brain, but the role of the inflammatory reactions in AD pathogenesis is not known. The goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between the inflammatory and neuropathological changes in AD brain through examining the density of lesions immunoreactive for inflammatory proteins …

Mother -Daughter Attachment, Social Support, Relationship With Husband, And Socioeconomic Status As Predictors Of Postpartum Depression, Dana Giles Lasek
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate whether the independent variables of mother-daughter attachment, social support, relationship with husband, and socioeconomic status would significantly predict postpartum depression. The sample consisted of 42 women between the ages of 18 and 38 who were in attendance at prenatal classes at two community hospitals. The independent variables were measured using the Mother-Daughter Attachment Scale (MDAS); the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ); the Relationship with Husband Subscale (RHU) which was contained within the Lederman Prenatal Self-Evaluation Questionnaire; and the Hollingshead Two-Factor index of Social Position. The dependent variable was measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression …
Physician Attitudes Toward Clinical Health Psychologists In Medical Settings, Katherine T. Kelly
Physician Attitudes Toward Clinical Health Psychologists In Medical Settings, Katherine T. Kelly
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary healthcare system is noted to be the de facto mental health system in the United States†(Stroshal, 1996). Despite this fact, patients typically do not receive the appropriate behavioral treatment to ameliorate their pain and suffering (Resnick & Rozensky, 1996). The present study attempted to investigate physicians' attitudes toward psychologists in medical settings with regard to whether these attitudes are influenced by (a) levels of medically/psychologically based medical conditions, (b) level of resident training, (c) level of exposure to psychological services, and (d) level of emphasis on psychological training within the medical schools. Thirty-nine female and forty-five male …
Plasticity In Avian Unihemispheric Sleep: An Antipredator Function, Niels Christian Rattenborg
Plasticity In Avian Unihemispheric Sleep: An Antipredator Function, Niels Christian Rattenborg
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A largely unexplored area in behavioral ecology is the inherent conflict between sleep and wakefulness. Wakefulness is an adaptive state that allows animals to interact with their environment, yet its efficacy is contingent upon prior sleep, a vulnerable state of reduced responsiveness. Birds and aquatic mammals have essentially side-stepped this problem by simultaneously engaging in both wakefulness and sleep; one cerebral hemisphere sleeps while the other remains awake, a unique state known as unihemispheric sleep. In aquatic mammals, unihemispheric sleep allows sleep and sufacing to breathe to occur concurrently. However, the adaptive function of avian unihemispheric sleep has been unclear. …
Psychometric Properties Of Measures Of Behavioral Inhibition With Preschool -Age Children, Randy Granville Floyd
Psychometric Properties Of Measures Of Behavioral Inhibition With Preschool -Age Children, Randy Granville Floyd
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Measures of behavioral inhibition offer promise in identification of young children with ADHD. This study investigated the factorial validity, ecological validity, and temporal reliability of 6 performance-based measures of behavioral inhibition in a sample of 70 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children. A single factor, Behavioral Inhibition, appeared to influence the scores on these measures. This factor was found to be significantly correlated with teacher ratings of aggression and inattention and to differentiate between genders and between older and younger children. Several individual measures were correlated with ratings of aggression and inattention and demonstrated adequate 1- to 2-week test-retest reliability.

The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Cognitions Related To Depression, Julia M. Lash
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Exercise is known to improve mood and reduce depression. However, the mechanism(s) responsible for the antidepressent effects of exercise are not known. Cognitive therapy, one of the most effective psychological treatments of depression, is based on the assumption that changes in a person's negative thoughts will result in a remission of depression. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar change in cognitions might occur with exercise. Self-report measures of mood (Profile of Mood States and Visual Analog Mood Scale) and depressive cognitions (Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire, Beck Self-Concept Test and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale) were measured before and …

What Sexuality? : An Exploratory Study Examining Sexual Activity And Affectionate Sexual Expression In A Western Australian Sample Of Older Adults, Christina M. Petz
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Sexuality later in life has been receiving increased research interest, however, a large majority of research investigates a narrow range of sexual behaviours, primarily frequency of sexual intercourse. There is limited information regarding other forms of sexual expression, specifically affectionate sexual expression that are relevant to older adults. The present day study explores what affectionate sexual behaviours constitute affectionate sexual expression and compares sexual intercourse with affectionate expression. The sample consisted of 77 married men (n=35) and women (n=42) aged 60-89 years who came from various senior groups and organisations in the Perth metropolitan area. A survey was developed that …

The Meaning Of God Today: A Phenomenographic Study Of The Art And Language Of A Group Of Senior Secondary Students, Anne P. Devenish
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Relationship with the Divine is the core of Christianity and the professional concern of a number of ministries, including that of religious education. Knowledge about what God means to children and adolescents would be beneficial to teachers. However, research has provided little useful information in this area. Most research conducted so far has been quantitative in nature and does not uncover the lived experience or the participants' personal understandings of this phenomenon. The qualitative research that has been done focuses mainly on the range of concepts of God held by participants. It is concerned with uncovering some of the elements …

One hundred and eight Participants (N= 1 08) filled out a questionnaire that contained the psychological well-being scales of self-efficacy, general health and perceived stress; and the organizational scales of job satisfaction and absenteeism. The participants were divided into groups of 18 according to which transport mode they used. The transport mode groups were drive alone, train, bus, car pool, walk or cycle. It was hypothesized that there …
Disruptive Behaviour In Nursing Home Residents: A Study Of Some Predisposing Factors, Ian F. Johnston
Disruptive Behaviour In Nursing Home Residents: A Study Of Some Predisposing Factors, Ian F. Johnston
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Behaviour disorders are common among nursing home residents and the management of these problems is difficult and emotionally taxing for caregivers. Although widespread acknowledgment of the problem exists amongst those caring for the elderly, there has, until recently, been little formal investigation of these disorders in any systematic degree. This study investigated 63 nursing home residents (22 males and 41 females) in two primary diagnostic categories; those with vascular dementia and those with dementia due to other causes, primarily Alzheimer's disease. A review of the literature suggested that the nature and frequency of disruptive behaviour differed across these two prevalent …
A Critical Analysis Of Devolution And The Corporate Reform Of Teachers' Work, Patrick O'Brien
A Critical Analysis Of Devolution And The Corporate Reform Of Teachers' Work, Patrick O'Brien
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The corporate transformation of bureaucratic public education in Western Australia commenced in the late 1980s. The reforms announced in the Better Schools Report (1987) aimed to devolve responsibility to schools for the purpose of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of public education. Designed to be responsive, adaptable, flexible and accountable, the administrative style accompanying the reforms is described as corporate managerialism. Devolution has impacted heavily on schools and teachers' work. Evidence presented in this thesis suggests that the corporate values and practices that dominate the organisation and management of schools create personal and professional conflict for many classroom teachers. Devolution …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis is designed to investigate how art assisted in the healing process of a person suffering from a life threatening illness. The research method used is a clinical case study. This study is a form of evaluative research, a systematic data-based inquiry concerning the participant's engagement with art in her healing process, a process which unfolds as being both life affirming and spiritually enriching. This case study takes a qualitative approach, with its emphasis on the participant's own account of her behaviour. The participant is a fifty-three year old woman, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, who was diagnosed with multiple …
A Revision Of The World Health Organisation Psychiatric Disability Assessment Schedule, Daniel Rock
A Revision Of The World Health Organisation Psychiatric Disability Assessment Schedule, Daniel Rock
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The burden schizophrenia places on the individual, on the family and on society in general is determined more by the associated disability rather than the manifest symptoms. Therefore, measurement of disability provides a baseline for evaluating change and directing treatment. This research has two main aims. The primary purpose of this study was to develop and validate a contemporary revision of the World Health Organisation-Psychiatric Disability Assessment Schedule (1988). Data used was based on data from the WHO Collaborative Study on Determinants of Outcome of Severe Mental Disorders (Sartorius et al., 1986). The second aim of this study was to …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of A Season Of Sport Education In A Regional Primary School, J. G. Strikwerda-Brown
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
An interpretive case study approach was employed to examine student and teacher perceptions of the implementation of a sport education in physical education program (SEPEP) in a Western Australian regional primary school. Choi’s (1992) curriculum dimensions were used as a framework. Three year seven teachers implemented SEPEP using a team teaching approach. The focus teacher, Ms Jenson, a highly regarded classroom teacher, described herself as non-sporty and lacking confidence and expertise in PE teaching. Students in her SEPEP volleyball class were considered less popular and less athletic when compared with those in the other two SEPEP classes. A focus volleyball …
Specific Domains Of Self-Esteem In Adolescents : Differences Between Suicide Ideated, Depressed And Non-Depressed Samples, Wendy J. Nicholls
Specific Domains Of Self-Esteem In Adolescents : Differences Between Suicide Ideated, Depressed And Non-Depressed Samples, Wendy J. Nicholls
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
A 1997 West Australian Child Health Survey (Zubrick et al., 1997) highlighted the need to explore issues regarding problems leading to emotional distress in adolescents. Adolescent self-esteem and suicidal ideation emerged as issues that required further research. The need to understand adolescent issues from a developmental perspective was also evident, due to the difficulties teenagers typically face during their adolescent years. This study builds on previous research by S. Harter and her colleagues, which identified different domains of self-esteem in young adolescents from a general population. Domains of self-esteem according to Harter's Self perception Profile for Adolescents (1988) and Social …
Colour Perception: A Phenomenological Study Into People's Spontaneous Physical, Psychological, Emotional And Spiritual Reactions, Through Experiential Use, To Colour, Nicolette Smith
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The predominance of colour as a therapy is becoming more apparent in our culture at present. It is a well-known fact, which has been thoroughly documented, that colour affects our senses in many ways and on many levels. Colour is considered to possess a healing element. A phenomenological study will be conducted to investigate people's spontaneous physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual reactions to colour. This will be explored through the experiential use of colour by the participants. The use of a pre-test questionnaire, post-test questionnaires, observation and de-briefing will be the main research instruments. A pilot study will be used …
Visual Arts History And Visual Arts Criticism : Applications In Middle Schooling, Lisa Paris
Visual Arts History And Visual Arts Criticism : Applications In Middle Schooling, Lisa Paris
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Visual arts history and criticism occupy central positions in visual arts curriculum statements in Western Australia. This status is sustained by the belief that the study of visual arts history and criticism actively contributes to the education of the student as a "whole person". In reality however, rather than attending to the holistic education of students, the application of visual arts history and criticism in Western Australian schools tends to be pragmatic and instrumental - visual arts teachers often use visual art works as "learning aids" because they don't have time, interest or experience in dealing with visual arts works …
Self-Efficacy And Depression In Older Adults: Differences Between Volunteers And Non-Volunteers, Anita Govindan
Self-Efficacy And Depression In Older Adults: Differences Between Volunteers And Non-Volunteers, Anita Govindan
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Volunteering has been found to play an important role in the lives of older adults. The general beneficial effects of volunteering have been widely established. However an investigation on the specific effect volunteering can have on older adults' perceptions of their abilities has yet to be established. It is important to investigate whether volunteering in later life is positively associated with one's perception of oneself or one's self-efficacy. Individuals with high levels of self-efficacy tend to believe they are more capable of handling stressful situations and are less likely to feel helpless and dependent and thus feel more confident of …
The Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of A Self-Administered Screening Instrument For First Rank Symptoms And Basic Symptoms In Psychotic And Non Psychotic Disorders, Borghild Bo
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The assessment of psychopathology is fundamental to clinical psychiatry. Schneider's (1959) First Rank Symptoms (FRS) are an integral part of numerous diagnostic criteria and Huber's Basic Symptoms (BS) are thought to form the basis of the FRS (Huber & Gross, 1989). The aim of the current study was to develop and evaluate a self-administered screening instrument to detect FRS and BS in clinical populations. A three stage design was used to achieve this. Stage one included the development of items and stage two was concerned with item analysis. Stage three comprised a pilot study in which a number of hypotheses …
University Preference : A Conjoint Analysis, Julia P. Turner
University Preference : A Conjoint Analysis, Julia P. Turner
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The business of tertiary education has become more and more competitive in recent years due to reductions in government funding and higher study fees. As the nature of the environment grows more competitive the role of marketing, previously non-existent in most universities, has grown significantly. One of the key pieces of information that would assist the marketing effort of any university is an understanding of what determines university preference. This study examines university preference in Western Australia. A form of conjoint analysis, known as Adaptive Conjoint Analysis (ACA), was used to investigate the relative importance of a number of attributes …
