The Fog Of Peace: Finding The End-State Of Hostilities, Manfred K. Rotermund Mr. Nov 1999

The Fog Of Peace: Finding The End-State Of Hostilities, Manfred K. Rotermund Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author provides us with a new way of thinking about peace and how to achieve it. Peace, he argues, arrives only when domestically centered progress is established in a post-conflict environment. The end of hostilities is only the end of the shooting. It is not the end of danger. It is not the end of the animosities or typically the conditions leading to the hostilities. As a result, the end of hostilities represents the beginning of a transition to peace—not peace itself.

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano Nov 1999

Communication And Migration: How Communication Influences The Human Economy, Carol Napolitano

Student Work

Communication and migration are tied through the common concept of community. Communication is the nervous system of a community, transmitting shared ideals, goals, and norms among citizens. Communication also is the process by which a community projects its identity or image to the outside world to attract new individuals who will nourish it economically and socially. Despite this deep connection between communication and community, migration research seldom incorporates communication theory. Likewise, communication scholars rarely look at the process of migration. The purpose of this thesis was to establish those theoretical links between communication and migration, look at how communication has …

Seeing More Than We Can Know: Visual Attention And Category Activation, Cn Macrae, Gv Bodenhausen, Ab Milne, G Calvini Nov 1999

Seeing More Than We Can Know: Visual Attention And Category Activation, Cn Macrae, Gv Bodenhausen, Ab Milne, G Calvini

School of Psychology

Extending existing work on the conditional automaticity of category activation, the present research investigated the extent to which category activation is moderated by the resolution of visual attention. As visual attention gates access to material in semantic memory, so too should it regulate the activation of social categories when triggering verbal labels are encountered. Accordingly, only when triggering stimuli fall within the spotlight of attention did we expect category activation to occur. The results of two studies supported this prediction. We consider the implications of our findings for recent treatments of category automaticity.

Is The Clean Air Act Unconstitutional?, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 1999

Is The Clean Air Act Unconstitutional?, Cass R. Sunstein

Michigan Law Review

This Article deals with two linked questions. The first involves the future of the Clean Air Act. The particular concern is how the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") might be encouraged, with help from reviewing courts, to issue better ambient air quality standards, and in the process to shift from some of the anachronisms of 1970s environmentalism to a more fruitful approach to environmental protection. The second question involves the role of the nondelegation doctrine in American public law, a doctrine that shows unmistakable signs of revival. I will suggest that improved performance by EPA and agencies in general, operating in …

Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod Nov 1999

Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

The American justice system is in the midst of an effort to evaluate and reform its handling of the criminal victimization of children and youth. Juveniles are unusually vulnerable to crime victimization (Hashima and Finkelhor, 1999), but concerns have been raised about the effectiveness and sensitivity of the justice system’s response to these crimes. The findings presented in this Bulletin indicate that a majority of victimizations of juveniles ages 12 to 17 are not being reported to police or other authorities. Even serious victimizations involving weapons and injury are significantly less likely to be reported when they happen to juveniles …

The Relationship Between Cynicism And Dispositional Attributions: Examining Individual Differences Of Police Officers, Jennifer L. Weimer Nov 1999

The Relationship Between Cynicism And Dispositional Attributions: Examining Individual Differences Of Police Officers, Jennifer L. Weimer

Student Work

Previous research has shown that veteran police officers are more cynical than less experienced police officers. Research has also shown that veterans are more likely than less experienced officers to make dispositional attributions for the actions of suspects in interpersonal disputes. This study examined these two premises and the relationship between cynicism and attributions. Participants included 127 police officers and 70 undergraduate students who completed a cynicism scale and were then asked to read two scenarios depicting interpersonal disputes. Participants answered several questions pertaining to their attributions of responsibility and their perceptions of credibility of the suspect and the victim …

Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson Nov 1999

Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson

Service Learning, General

A popular topic of conversation lately among parents, educators, policymakers, students and the media is the isolation of young people from their communities. Many people feel schools have a responsibility to build bridges among diverse populations of children and youth, provide nonviolent problem-solving experiences and promote positive activities for young people, even during after-school hours. Involving young people in community service is seen as one potential solution. Indeed, some citizens and educators would like to ensure that all students — including those least likely to participate voluntarily but most likely to benefit from the experience — have the opportunity to …

Ethnic Variability In The Treatment Of Pain, Rafael A. Ortega, Benjamin A. Youdelman, Richard C. Havel Nov 1999

Ethnic Variability In The Treatment Of Pain, Rafael A. Ortega, Benjamin A. Youdelman, Richard C. Havel

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Ethnicity has been shown to be an important determinant of behavior during illness, particularly when a painful condition is present. Studies have shown that pain may be undertreated among different ethnic groups of patients. Whereas individual variations in the reaction to pain occur, available data do not support racial and/or ethnic differences in the perception of pain, leaving no justification for this discrepancy in treatment. Regardless of ethnicity, inadequate treatment of pain has been known for some time and has been referred to in recent literature as "oligoanalgesia." Lack of understanding of different ethnic and cultural groups can lead to …

Helping Future Teachers To Be Effective Learners: Providing In Context Learning Support For First Year Teacher Education Students, Barbara De La Harpe, Alex Radloff Nov 1999

Helping Future Teachers To Be Effective Learners: Providing In Context Learning Support For First Year Teacher Education Students, Barbara De La Harpe, Alex Radloff

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Future teachers need to be effective learners and also effective teachers of learning. However, many Teacher Education students are underprepared for university study and, as a consequence, may, not be effective learners. Thus, they need help to develop the cognitive, metacognitive, motivational and affective strategies which are needed for qualitv learning and their future teaching. Current theory and research suggests that such help is best provided by the discipline instructor in the context of regular teaching. In this paper we outline how students can be helped to be effective learners, describe how we provided such help to a group of …

Establishing Academic And Social Support Groups For Teacher Education Students, Anna M. Sullivan Nov 1999

Establishing Academic And Social Support Groups For Teacher Education Students, Anna M. Sullivan

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Following their research into cooperative learning, Johnson and Johnson (1994) have suggested that teachers establish base groups in their classes to provide academic and social support to students. Base groups are small groups of students that meet regularly to discuss matters associated with the students' social and academic goals and progress. One of the features of base groups is that the teacher does not participate in their discussions unless specifically invited to do so. While there is some evidence that base groups are effective in providing academic and social support to school students, there is little information about their effectiveness …

Illinois V. Perkins, Marty Jaquez Nov 1999

Illinois V. Perkins, Marty Jaquez

San Diego Law Review

In Illinois v. Perkins, the United States Supreme Court held that an undercover police officer need not give Miranda warnings before questioning an incarcerated suspect. In doing so, the Court found that the interests protected by Miranda are not implicated when a suspect does not know the identity of his interrogator. This Note analyzes the Court's reasoning in light of the concerns that motivated the Miranda Court. The analysis reveals that the Perkins reflects the Court's propensity to undermine the Miranda. Unlike other Supreme Court cases creating exceptions to Miranda, Perkins permits deliberate police deception in obtaining an unwarned confession …

Altered, Pamela Bentzien Nov 1999

Altered, Pamela Bentzien

Theses

This thesis explores, through photography, the question: What will the landscape of next generations look like? What are we leaving behind for future generations? The author created images which impart a ponderous mood which reflects on how individual lifestyles affect our natural environment. Are we leaving behind any natural resources for our future generations?

A La Conquista, Carlos Ruiz-Valarino Nov 1999

A La Conquista, Carlos Ruiz-Valarino

Theses

This thesis paper is an integral and complementary part of my thesis exhibition "A la conquista . . .” Its purpose is to enhance my audience's understanding of the interests and vicissitudes that have motivated me to undertake such a challenging task. This project has its origin in an earlier autobiographical photographic project. Through it I developed an interest in visually questioning aspects related to my past and present: How did I become the individual I am? And what aspects of my experience define my identity? My parents are of different nationalities, I was born in Puerto Rico, and then …

Expression Of Relationship In Life, Hoyeon Chung Nov 1999

Expression Of Relationship In Life, Hoyeon Chung

Theses

This paper discusses a series of five sculptures that were made during my two years of graduate school at Rochester Institute of Technology. During that period, I realized and contemplated my existence. I spent much of my first year thinking about my emotions. The inspirations around me were getting more broad starting from different the interactions in all elements of my life. This idea also might be universal. Even though all lives are different, there are similar characteristics that most people possess. People are living within boundaries. The boundaries can consist of several elements, such as family, friends, environment and …
