Alienation And The Motif Of The Unlived Life In Liu Heng's Fiction, Birgit Linder Jan 1999

Alienation And The Motif Of The Unlived Life In Liu Heng's Fiction, Birgit Linder

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

Critics have long argued that alienation is the essence of modern culture. Having long served as a theme in literature that profoundly reflects the changes and challenges of modernity, alienation has, after a hiatus of a few decades, undergone a conceptual resurgence during the 1990’s as recent research in the West indicates a correlation with the phenomenon of postmodernity. With the breakdown of communism in vast parts of the world and the development toward pluralistic societies, the field of human possibilities has expanded considerably and the response thereof demands, therefore, a new definition of alienation. If previously alienation signified the …

A Structural Equation Model Of Environmental Attitude And Behaviour : The Hong Kong Experience, Oi Ling Siu, Kui Yin Cheung Jan 1999

A Structural Equation Model Of Environmental Attitude And Behaviour : The Hong Kong Experience, Oi Ling Siu, Kui Yin Cheung

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The present study aims at establishing a structural equation model relating affect, verbal commitment, and actual commitment using a sample of 271 university students (119 males, 152 females) by applying the theory of reasoned action (Aizen & Fishbein, 1980). A linear structural equation relation (LISREL) model was developed to verify that verbal commitment is a function of affect, and in tum, determine actual commitment. Sixty percent of the variance of verbal commitment could be explained by affect, and 19 % of actual commitment could be explained by verbal commitment; yet only a small percentage of the variance of actual commitment …

The Status Of Refugees In Lincoln, Nebraska's - Low-Income Housing And Racial Segregation: A Contribution Or Contrast To Neighborhood Solidarity?, David Baker, Kristy Feldhousen Jan 1999

The Status Of Refugees In Lincoln, Nebraska's - Low-Income Housing And Racial Segregation: A Contribution Or Contrast To Neighborhood Solidarity?, David Baker, Kristy Feldhousen

Nebraska Anthropologist

The process of becoming a refugee is lengthy, complicated, and arduous. It involves timing, political, religiolls, and economic considerations - and luck. The United Nations High Commission for Refugee's (UNHCR) in combination with the Department of State (DOS) have established their own particular criteria for granting refugee status and placement policy. After granting refugee status, the UNHCR places the refugee into three optional resolutions: repatriation to the refugee's home country, local resettlement in the country of first asylum, and resettlemellt to a third country (US Dept of Health, 1995). 1n the post World War II era an influx of refugees …

Visions in Leisure and Business

Hallmark or mega-events have been widely hailed as opportunities to enhance the awareness and appeal of tourist destinations. Because hallmark or mega events such as the Olympic games hold the market potential for national and international tourism development, studies of host residents' support of the Olympic games hold special significance. The purpose of this study was to examine Atlanta, residents on their perceptions of the State of Georgia hosting the 1996 Olympic games. Pre and post Olympic comparisons of residents showed strong support for Georgia hosting the Olympic games, limited change is willingness to attend Olympic events, and statistically significant …

Recreation Benefits Sought By Activity And User Groups, Mary Stuart Wisnom Jan 1999

Recreation Benefits Sought By Activity And User Groups, Mary Stuart Wisnom

Visions in Leisure and Business

This research tested the relationships between benefits sought during a recreation experience, recreation activities, and user group characteristics. The data comes from an on-site self-administered survey of visitors to 13 parks in Southeast Michigan. One way analysis of variance, Scheffe's test, and Linear Regression were used to test the research objectives. The importance of different benefits varied according to user group characteristics and activities. Activity variables slightly outperformed group characteristics in predicting benefit ratings, with one exception. Groups with women rated nature enjoyment higher than men. Male only groups rated excitement higher. Socializing was rated more important by larger groups. …

Psychology In Custody Litigation, Petra Smith Jan 1999

Psychology In Custody Litigation, Petra Smith

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Historically, American divorce law across the various states was based upon the moral concept of fault. The uniform presumption in a divorce case was that the perpetrator spouse owed some type of compensation to the victim spouse. Of course, this gave rise to very spectacular, but often unnecessary, litigation. Throughout the years, with the growing number of divorce cases across the country, it became obvious that such litigation had a deleterious effect on the family, especially when children were involved. Thus, in an effort to address this problem, the concept of no-fault divorce began in California in 1969, with the …

The Church Of Mulletology, Michael Mckennedy Jan 1999

The Church Of Mulletology, Michael Mckennedy

Whittier Scholars Program

In this project I aim to give a heuristic account of the punk and underground music scene’s relationship to the phenomenon known as the mullet. I do not intend to construct profile of Mullet identity,” nor is this an attempt to understand the Psychology of the mullet,” nor is this an attempt to understand the Psychology of the mullet. The mullet hairstyle exists in many forms. It can be found women, on cowboys, and generally throughout all sectors of society. But I don’t actually look at the mullet itself at all. I look at how mullet humor is constructed in …

Attitudes To Biotechnology And Genetically Modified Food : A Review, Juliana Rose Cannon Jan 1999

Attitudes To Biotechnology And Genetically Modified Food : A Review, Juliana Rose Cannon

Theses : Honours

Debate surrounds the introduction of new biotechnological applications such as genetically modified food (GMF). With this in mind a critical review of the debate, it's emerging themes, and approaches to measurement was undertaken. The intention of this review was to argue that while existing empirical measures have advanced our understanding of attitudes to GMF, they are limited both conceptually and methodologically. Overall, the validity and reliability of research support was compromised. Conceptually, attitudes to GMF were composed of a number of potential dimensions that have yet to be measured. Adherence to sound scale construction techniques may facilitate more reliable and …

Loneliness Underneath Laughter : Aspects Of Alienation In The Early Plays Of Tom Stoppard, Steven Hounsome Jan 1999

Loneliness Underneath Laughter : Aspects Of Alienation In The Early Plays Of Tom Stoppard, Steven Hounsome

Theses : Honours

This thesis investigates the various states of alienation that exist in the early plays of the British dramatist Tom Stoppard. By first defining alienation (and discussing the areas of contention which surround the concept), it proceeds to argue that whilst Stoppard has been greatly revered as a comic writer his works are equally consequential for their sensitivity and insight. They depict a prolificacy of characters who fail to assimilate with their society, can no longer relate to those around them and, as is often the case, reach for, but never manage to grasp a sense of their own identity. The …

Masculinity, Social Support And Sense Of Community : The Mens Group Experience, Julie A. Reddin Jan 1999

Masculinity, Social Support And Sense Of Community : The Mens Group Experience, Julie A. Reddin

Theses : Honours

Recently, there has been increased attention in understanding factors that influence men's health and wellbeing. This paper examines men's wellbeing and the "male crisis' in Western Society. A brief historical overview is outlined to illustrate how social change has impacted on male gender roles. Men's role in society is discussed in relation to their response to feminism, and gender identity and the concept of masculinity as a social construction is outlined. Factors such as changing gender roles and subsequent role confusion are addressed in connection with men's health. This paper will then examine men's social support systems, with a focus …

Self Concept: Mothers And Their Children, Leanne D. Wood Jan 1999

Self Concept: Mothers And Their Children, Leanne D. Wood

Theses : Honours

Over the past 30 years divorce has been on the incline, resulting in more children living in one parent families, the majority headed by single mothers. The study of the impact of divorce and outcomes for children and their mothers has become increasingly important. According to many researchers, the study of self-concept is considered to be one of the best indicators of a person's psychological adjustment and wellbeing (Hattie, 1992; Ford, 1985). Studies have neglected to consider self-concept as a major focus and consider the relationship between the child's self-concept and their mother's self-concept. This study focuses on single mothers …

The Confusion Of Causes And Reasons In Forensic Psychology: Deconstructing Mens Rea And Other Mental Events, Joel R. Cornwell Jan 1999

The Confusion Of Causes And Reasons In Forensic Psychology: Deconstructing Mens Rea And Other Mental Events, Joel R. Cornwell

University of Richmond Law Review

The public perception that criminal conduct is increasingly excused on psychological grounds, notwithstanding a markedly small statistical success rate of diminished capacity defenses, evinces misplaced frustration over a broader cultural reluctance or inability to assign moral blame. Psychology is seen as feeding a kind of determinism that rationalizes evil behavior and precludes retributive punishment as a matter of scientific principle. This perception is accurate to the degree that it reveals our legal system's fundamental confusion of purposes in judging and explaining criminal behavior. This confusion is engendered by the indeterminacy of language, which entangles the verificationist mode and purpose of …

The Language Of Sovereignty: Lucien Bouchard And The Separatist Movement In Quebec, Christine Elizabeth Smith Jan 1999

The Language Of Sovereignty: Lucien Bouchard And The Separatist Movement In Quebec, Christine Elizabeth Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The separatist movement in Quebec currently has a forceful leader in Lucien Bouchard As a staunch advocate of the cause, the Premier plays a vital role in relevant public discussion. The unique aspect in this case is the bilingual component to the debate on sovereignty; separatist appeals must be made to both English-speaking and French-speaking audiences Johannesen's (1975) ethical evaluative criteria for human communication, four Bouchard speeches, two in each language, are analyzed toward an exegesis of the potential to sway voters. The resulting implications indicate a significant difference in the theoretical framework for sovereignty established by Bouchard within each …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

By using a questionnaire derived from the Health Belief Model, this study examined older adults' knowledge of AIDS, perceptions of risk to AIDS, and at-risk behaviors. A total of 166 questionnaires were received from the EXCELL and Senior Adult Theater Group members actively enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The results indicated the respondents were knowledgeable about the transmission and seriousness of AIDS but were less knowledgeable about AIDS transmission through casual contact and the medical aspects of AIDS. Although they recognized the seriousness of AIDS, they generally do not believe that they are susceptible to this disease. …
