The Effects Of An Organizational Communication Intervention On Job Satisfaction In A Public Health Organization, Ann Kathleen Riley Jan 1999

The Effects Of An Organizational Communication Intervention On Job Satisfaction In A Public Health Organization, Ann Kathleen Riley

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an organizational communication intervention on job satisfaction levels. Nineteen employees of a rural public health department served as the subjects of the study. Archival data was reviewed based on a pre and postjob satisfaction questionnaire administered to subjects in relation to a communication intervention. It was hypothesized that job satisfaction levels would increase as a result of an organizational communication intervention. Results of an independent !-test analysis for overall pre and postjob satisfaction scores did not support this hypothesis. Implications of the study and recommendations for future research are …

Perceptions Of Georgia Public Secondary School Principals And Counselors Regarding Counseling Program Tasks, Dorothy Frances Hall Hardy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The purpose of this research was to determine if the perceptions of public secondary school principals and counselors differed as to actual and desired involvements of secondary school counselors in appropriate and inappropriate counseling program tasks. The counseling program tasks used for this study were specified in Sharing the Vision: The National Standards for School Counseling Programs, a publication of the American School Counselor Association.

Two survey instruments were developed using the appropriate and inappropriate counseling program tasks. Section I consisted of Likert scales for responses to actual and desired involvement in each task area. Section II asked for …

Holding The Same-Sex Sexual Harassment Claim At Arm's Length: The Supreme Court's Strict [And Correct] Interpretation Of Title Vii In Oncale V. Sundowner Offshore Services, Inc., Thomas I. Queen Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids an employer from "discriminat[ing] against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual's ...sex." In addition to prohibiting discriminatory hiring practices based on the potential employee's sex, the Supreme Court has extended the language of Title VII to afford employees a remedy for sexual harassment in the workplace.

Establishing A Pattern: An Analysis Of The Supreme Court's Establishment Clause Jurisprudence, Lisa Langendorfer Jan 1999

Establishing A Pattern: An Analysis Of The Supreme Court's Establishment Clause Jurisprudence, Lisa Langendorfer

University of Richmond Law Review

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution reads in part, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." These two phrases are known as the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause, respectively, and each plays a distinct part in determining the role and status of religion in American society. The Free Exercise Clause guarantees freedom of religious expression to the individual, while the Establishment Clause prohibits the government from involving itself in religious affairs and prevents religious officials from exerting improper influence over the government.

Privacy And Celebrity: An Essay On The Nationalization Of Intimacy, Robert F. Nagel Jan 1999

Privacy And Celebrity: An Essay On The Nationalization Of Intimacy, Robert F. Nagel

University of Richmond Law Review

I start from the rather obvious proposition that in recent years the American public has placed a high value on the right of privacy. This general commitment to privacy was what kept Robert Bork, despite his qualifications, off the Supreme Court, and more recently it was what kept William Clinton, despite his behavior, in the White House. Bork's nomination was a threat to the constitutional right to use contraceptives and to choose abortion, while the impeachment charges against Clinton were a threat to the moral distinction between public political life and private sexual behavior. The power that the idea of …

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Legal Issues Involving Children, Robert E. Shepherd Jr. Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Legal Issues Involving Children, Robert E. Shepherd Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

The Virginia General Assembly once again acted in a very restrained fashion in addressing juvenile justice issues in the lengthening wake after the extensive statutory changes in 1994 and 1996. The newly enacted juvenile competency statute is an important innovation contained in the new article 18 oftitle 16.1 of the Virginia Code, and a study by the Virginia Bar Association on the applicability of the insanity defense in juvenile delinquency proceedings will further address the implications of mental health problems for children in trouble. One major issue in the delinquency area that arose during the past year involved the necessity …

Prayer At Public School Graduation Ceremonies: Exercise In Futility Or A Teachable Moment?, Charles J. Russo Jan 1999

Prayer At Public School Graduation Ceremonies: Exercise In Futility Or A Teachable Moment?, Charles J. Russo

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Due to conflicting lower court judgments on the propriety of prayer at public school graduation ceremonies, this question will return to the Supreme Court. This article is divided into three major sections. Part I briefly recites the history of the Establishment Clause and education. Part II examines case law relevant to prayer at public school graduation ceremonies. This section begins with a brief examination of the cases prior to Lee. It next reviews the majority and dissenting opinions in Lee in some detail to show how the diametrically opposed views of Justices Kennedy of the majority and Scalia of the …

Born And Made: Sisters, Brothers, And The Deceased Wife's Sister Bill, Elisabeth Rose Gruner Jan 1999

Born And Made: Sisters, Brothers, And The Deceased Wife's Sister Bill, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

English Faculty Publications

We are--almost all--born into families, born into relationship. Like Mary Ann Evans, I was born a little sister--but had I encountered her "Brother and Sister" sonnets at twelve, I might have thrown the book across the room. George Eliot's fantasy of a perfected brother-sister relationship in these sonnets rings hollow and yet resonates profoundly with me. As a little sister myself, I wonder what could make the relationship--so often fraught with competition, envy, and neglect, yet potentially so richly rewarding--seem so powerfully right, so important to and adult woman's self-identification? For the narrator of the sonnets is certainly an adult …

An Analysis Of Physicians' Reluctance To Follow Terminally Ill Patients' Advance Directives, Norma Poirier Jan 1999

An Analysis Of Physicians' Reluctance To Follow Terminally Ill Patients' Advance Directives, Norma Poirier

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

This explanatory study examined the reasons why physicians have difficulty respecting the wishes of terminally ill patients who refuse treatment. Consistent with the relevant literature, three alternative explanations were hypothesized in answering the question: fear of litigation, religious beliefs, and medical professional values.

Evidence was gathered from three different sources. Semistructured interviews were carried out with 24 emergency physicians from the Moncton Area in the Canadian province of New Brunswick and submitted to both quantitative and qualitative content analysis. Nineteen cases of terminally ill patients whose wishes not to be treated were not respected were collected and submitted to content …

Validation: The Missing Link In Recovery From Childhood Sexual Abuse?, Jill Wollenzien-Daniels Jan 1999

Validation: The Missing Link In Recovery From Childhood Sexual Abuse?, Jill Wollenzien-Daniels

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

This study considered whether validation through corroborative evidence (an outside source affirming the abuse) is necessary for remediation of symptoms in women survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) who have varying degrees of PTSD. It utilized multiple case studies, in a mixed qualitative-quantitative design, to gain a better understanding of the role of validation in the recovery process.

Two groups of adult female survivors with varying degrees of PTSD were compared: those who had validation of their abuse experiences through corroborative evidence (n=12), and those who did not (n=13). They were queried about their belief in the importance of validation …

Elder Abuse: A Need For Awareness, Jill M. Hannagan Jan 1999

Elder Abuse: A Need For Awareness, Jill M. Hannagan

Theses

Abuse of the elderly continues to be amplified as the older population of the United States has increased . Lack of professional awareness within healthcare institutions has put seniors at risk for violence . One problem associated with the identification of elderly abuse has been assaults going unreported or unnoticed for lack of poor assessment and observation skills. Therefore it is incumbent for healthcare institutions to take all steps necessary to better define and identify this serious and growing problem.

Relationship Between A Therapist's Locus Of Control, Therapeutic Orientation, And Directiveness Of Therapeutic Communication, Amy Suzanne Lammers Jan 1999

Relationship Between A Therapist's Locus Of Control, Therapeutic Orientation, And Directiveness Of Therapeutic Communication, Amy Suzanne Lammers

Theses

The importance of matching the client and the therapist on certain variables has been stressed by researchers as being an important part of the therapeutic process. While several studies have addressed the locus of control of the client and its relationship to therapeutic communications, few have focused on therapist variables as being just as important. This study examines the relationship between the locus of control of the therapist, the theoretical orientation of the therapist, and the directiveness of therapeutic communications. Subjects for this study were 82 Professional Counselors Licensed in the state of Missouri. In addition to demographic data sheets, …

Identification Of The Unknown Soldier And The Fight For The Right To Anonymity: The Human Genome Project And Implications Of A National Dna Database, Kelly S. Erbes

Cleveland State Law Review

The focus of this writing is the use of DNA for identification purposes and the issues that arise when genetic traits and/or predisposition to physical or mental conditions are linked to the individual specifically, along with the implications of a national DNA database as a system of identification. It has become the general rule that it is not an unreasonable invasion of privacy to take DNA for the purpose of identifying criminal offenders through a DNA database. This writing will examine the potential for nonconsensual inclusion of nearly everyone into such a system, as well as the ramifications in the …
