Effect Of Psychological Stress On Nasal Immunity, Erdal Seren, Abdülcemal Ümit Işik, Mehmet İmamoglu, Osman Bahadir, Mehmet Arif Köroğlu, Yavuz Tekeli̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Stress activates the hypotalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis, increases circulating glucocorticoids, and is associated with alterations in immune functions. Nasal mucosa is richly innervated by sympathetic nerve fiber and nasal patency changes in response to various sympathetic stimuli. These fibres form close neuroeffector junctions with lymphocytes and macrophages. Nasal lavage and peripheral blood samples were collected from healthy medical students one hour before their exams and a week later, after the declaration of results of the exams were announced. We determined and compared the distribution of T lymphocyte subsets in students under psychological stress The T cell: natural killer cell, T helper …

Mood State And Recent Cocaine Use Are Not Associated With Levels Of Cocaine Cue Reactivity, Steven J. Robbins, Ronald N. Ehrman, Anna Rose Childress, James Cornish, Charles P. O’Brien Jan 1999

Mood State And Recent Cocaine Use Are Not Associated With Levels Of Cocaine Cue Reactivity, Steven J. Robbins, Ronald N. Ehrman, Anna Rose Childress, James Cornish, Charles P. O’Brien

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Eighty-one cocaine-dependent outpatients were assessed for their reactions to cocaine-related cues in a laboratory setting. All subjects contributed a urine sample prior to the session. Compared with non-drug control cues, the cocaine stimuli produced increases in physiological arousal, self-reports of high, craving, and withdrawal, and self-reports of negative mood. Subjects who tested cocaine-positive on the day of testing differed only in skin resistance responding from those who tested cocaine-negative. Changes in cue-induced physiological and self-report measures were also not associated with between-subject variations in mood as measured by the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire administered prior to cue assessment. …

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador Jan 1999

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Deslanting the Lens examines the historical and sociological implications of how Asian men have been represented in popular American film. From the early days of “yellowface” to caricatures like Long Duck Dong, Asian men have been relegated to perpetual foreigner status in American cinema. This paper will explore why the portrayal of Asian men has been limited to very specific ideas about Asian and Asian Americans are in society. This analysis will also include how socio/political events have shaped and influence popular perceptions about Asians, that inform how Asian men continue to be depicted in film.

Collaboration Between Lawyers And Social Workers: Re-Examining The Nature And Potential Of The Relationship, Paula Galowitz

Faculty Articles

The impetus for this Article was a case handled this past year by the Civil Legal Services Clinic which I teach at New York University Law School. In the clinic, third-year students represent clients in a variety of cases, including housing, government benefits, immigration, guardianship planning for clients who are HIV positive, and education. The students, who work in pairs, select from the clinic's docket the kinds of cases on which they want to work. The two students in this particular case chose to work on a case for a client who was HIV positive. The clinic's experience in that …

Generative Concern, Political Commitment, And Charitable Actions, Bill E. Peterson, Lauren Duncan Jan 1999

Generative Concern, Political Commitment, And Charitable Actions, Bill E. Peterson, Lauren Duncan

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The implications of psychosocial generativity (Erikson, 1950) for understanding contemporary politics were explored. Study 1 replicated, in two samples, previous findings that generativity concerns are related to a variety of political activities, including the expenditure of time and money in support of political organizations. Using path analyses, Study 2 extended these findings and demonstrated how midlife generativity concerns interacted with political orientation and interest in politics to produce stronger relationships with giving. These findings suggest that people view the political arena as one important way to improve society and thereby manifest cultural generativity. Although focusing on the domain of politics, …
