Elder Care: An Evaluation Of Communication Resources For Lay Caregivers In Southern Nevada, Deborah Lee Hauth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hidden behind closed doors of nursing homes, hospitals and neighborhood residences, was a segment of the population suffering from dementing illnesses. Although seldom seen, these older Americans presented significant challenges for the family members caring for them. This study focused attention on these lay caregivers and the effectiveness of community resources, from their perspective. With assistance from Southern Nevada Alzheimer's Association staff, a survey was conducted. The results showed agencies rated as "satisfactory" in their efforts to provide information, with the Alzheimer's Association newsletter ranked as the primary source of information for caregivers. Socially Desirable Responding On The Machiavellianism Scale: Response Bias Or Construct?, Maryn Lyn Hoefer Jan 1999

Socially Desirable Responding On The Machiavellianism Scale: Response Bias Or Construct?, Maryn Lyn Hoefer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Mach IV scale measures Machiavellianism, the propensity to be manipulatory in interpersonal relations. The Mach IV has been criticized for social desirability response bias, or the tendency to present oneself in an overly favorable light. Socially desirable responding, as measured by the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding, however, was postulated to reflect a facet of the Machiavellianism construct. A coalition-bargaining game was played with college students (N = 126), using 21 groups each of sex-segregated triads in a 2 (sex) by 3 (high, medium, and low levels of Machiavellianism) between-subjects design. Game scores served as the dependent variable and …

Fall From Grace: United States Images Of Japan, 1894--1921, Darryl Scott Hushaw Jan 1999

Fall From Grace: United States Images Of Japan, 1894--1921, Darryl Scott Hushaw

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the shifting American perceptions of Japan in the period from the Sino-Japanese War to the Washington Naval Conference, as expressed in the popular press, government statements, missionary speeches, and other printed materials. During this period, the American image of Japan changed dramatically, and the image of the Japanese was transformed from an admirable, if exotic, people, to formidable economic, cultural, and strategic rivals. While Theodore Roosevelt pursued a pragmatic East Asian policy based on the interests and capabilities of the nations in question, his successors altered this policy, with the Taft Administration mounting an economic challenge to …

Gambling Addiction And Life Meaning, Andrew Bohdan Plesh Jan 1999

Gambling Addiction And Life Meaning, Andrew Bohdan Plesh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Addictive Gambling has plagued mankind for thousands of years. However, it has only recently been studied extensively. One proposed cause for addiction, which has been used in studying alcohol and drug abuse, is a lack of meaning in the addict's life. However, a causal link between life meaning and gambling addiction has not yet been examined. This study used a sample of 355 normal people and compared scores on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the Purpose in Life (PIL) Test, the short form of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST). Relationships between the …

Changing Images: The End Of Legalized Prostitution In Las Vegas, Sarah Hall Washburn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Legalized prostitution in Las Vegas began with the town's founding in 1905 and lasted until World War II. By researching legalized prostitution in Las Vegas from an economic and social standpoint as opposed to just a moral perspective, a broader picture emerged to show the changes that occurred. These changes were not unique to Las Vegas, but accompanied many other frontier towns of the West. Quality Of Life Amidst The Lights Of Las Vegas, Terri Lynn Hicks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent literature on quality of life indicators and sustainability has focused on quantifiable measurements, not qualitative. In actuality, the whole concept of quality of life is a subjective valuation of a myriad of issues by individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between environmental, career, and personal factors and practice role commitment and practice role value of doctorally prepared full-time nursing faculty within the theoretical framework of faculty role performance by Blackburn and Lawrence (1995). A mailed survey was used to collect data related to faculty practice from 506 faculty who were members of the American Nurses Association or the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. Practice role commitment was level of engagement in the practice role. Practice role value was importance assigned to the practice role by the faculty. Environmental variables …

The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge Jan 1999

The Impact Of Communal Behaviors On The Judgement Of Service Quality., Barbara Ross Wooldridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research addressed the question of the importance of the service encounter (both functional and social support components) and the importance of the technical component in consumers' judgements of service quality. To date in the literature no one has attempted to measure in a field setting, the relative contribution to the judgement of service quality of each of these components. This research switched the focus of the service quality's definition from the provider's point of view to the consumer. By measuring the three service components' importance, the researcher hoped to obtain a clearer understanding of the consumer's determination as to …

High School Biology Students' Participation In A Year-Long Sequence Of Analogical Activities: The Relationship Of Development Of Analogical Thought To Student Learning And Classroom Interactions., Marcella Wichser Hackney

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research explored development of analogical thought through high school biology students' participation in a year-long sequence of analogical activities. Analogizing involves: selecting a familiar analog; mapping similarities and differences between the analog and less familiar target; making inferences from the analogy; evaluating validity of the inferences; and ultimately, understanding the biological target (Holyoak & Thagard, 1995). This investigation considered: student development of independence in learning through analogical thought, student learning of biology, the relationship between development of students' analogical thinking and students' learning of biology, and the quality of student interactions in the classroom. This researcher, as teacher participant, …

Analysis Of *Policy Alternatives In The Implementation Of A Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program For Agriculture., Hugo Cardona Castillo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Agriculture has been singled out as one of the major nonpoint sources of water pollution. To identify alternative policy tools for the implementation of a non-regulatory approach to comply with the Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program (CNPCP) required by The Coastal Zone Act Reauthorization Amendments of 1990, policy makers need to determine factors that may influence producers' willingness to adopt proposed Best Management Practices (BMPs). Neoclassical economic concepts of utility maximization on the part of agricultural producers constitutes the theoretical background in this study, but it is enhanced with the incorporation of a well proved set of theoretical tools based …

Magnetism Of Magnets: The Impact Of High School Magnet Programs On Desegregation And School Improvement In East Baton Rouge Parish., Alonzo Ray Luce

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The movement of school desegregation plans from mandatory means to voluntary means has led to a fierce debate. The school desegregation problem is encapsulated by two competing strategies: making a plan that enforces racial balance, and making a plan that stops white flight. The purpose of this study was to describe how high schools in East Baton Rouge Parish implemented court approved magnet programs, and to examine the results brought about at each of the high schools in terms of desegregation and school improvement. The study was designed to answer the following research questions: (1) How have high schools in …

"Playboy"'S First Year: A Rhetorical Construction Of Masculine Sexuality., David John Lambkin Jan 1999

"Playboy"'S First Year: A Rhetorical Construction Of Masculine Sexuality., David John Lambkin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The problem addressed by this study was twofold: what rhetorical strategies does a pornographic text actually employ? and what impact does that message have on its mate readers' sexual ideology? The first year's issues of Playboy comprise the specific text to be analyzed because Playboy is still the most popular men's magazine in the world and because various critics indicated that it was the prototype for current pornographic texts. Furthermore, this pornographic text has always been a public artifact as opposed to the surreptitious or illegal forms of pornography, which made it an apt choice for a rhetorical study. Three …

Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine Jan 1999

Rhetoric And Institutional Environments: The Legitimation Of Higher Education In Twentieth Century America., Thomas J. St. Antoine

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation seeks to discover and analyze the divergent ways that higher education has been legitimated by American discourse in the twentieth century. Institutions of higher learning have been able to survive and flourish because they have been seen as essential to the health of a democracy, of a free-market economy, and of religious institutions. However, the explanations for such legitimacy have been diverse and varied. Bormann's fantasy theme analysis can account for the values and beliefs that form the institutional environments shaping and legitimating organizations such as colleges and universities. Fantasy themes expressed in popular discourse are expressions of …

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley Jan 1999

Musing The Garden: A Poetics Of Place And Emplacement., Scott Parker Smiley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A walk through a garden is an immersion into a wealth of sensory and relational experiences of place. Plant varieties, color, texture, flowers, forms, pathways, light, benches, ornaments, and other experiential qualities of place work upon one's consciousness to draw one into intimate contact with the place "Emplacement" is this intimate, immersed engagement with a place, a process and state of being that erodes the boundaries we so often erect between self and environment. Traditional systematic forms of inquiry, based upon the Cartesian idea of an essential separation between object and subject, are not applicable to the study of emplacement …

Performing Dracula: A Critical Examination Of A Popular Text In Three Sites Of Performance., Jonathan Matthew Gray Jan 1999

Performing Dracula: A Critical Examination Of A Popular Text In Three Sites Of Performance., Jonathan Matthew Gray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dracula is a significant example of a popular phenomenon with a long and ongoing history of productive circulation in Anglo-American culture. While theorists of popular culture often use the term "performance" in their explanations of the popularity and meaningful operations of such phenomena in a culture, they do not always provide concrete definitions of what they mean by performance. This study provides an analysis of the roles performance plays in a specific popular culture phenomenon. Identifying Bram Stoker's Dracula as a nexus for a broader cultural activity, this study examines articulations of Dracula in performances and texts that both precede …

The Effects Of Type Of Web Support And Instructional Mode On The Knowledge And Discrimination Of Musical Texture Among Undergraduate Elementary Education Majors., Kenneth Lee Liske

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of varying types of out-of-class web support media and active (performance) versus passive (listening) modes of in-class instructional activities on the ability of university level non-musicians (N = 58) to define and identify specific characteristics of music texture from printed and recorded musical excerpts. Near and far transfer of learning was also examined. Three web support treatments consisted of investigator-designed supplementary web sites, available for out-of-class access, containing visual content only, audio and visual content, or progressively disclosed text, graphics, and sound. Two instructional mode treatments consisted of participation in …

Family Portraits: Contemporary Women Novelists And The Nuclear Family., Tamra Lynn Horton Jan 1999

Family Portraits: Contemporary Women Novelists And The Nuclear Family., Tamra Lynn Horton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A society whose economy becomes increasingly dependent on commodity fetishism cultivates obsessive materialistic desire in its subjects. The demand for mass consumerism buoys reification, a mania wherein human beings are analogous to goods and vice versa. Successful reification depends upon hegemonic apparatuses: social, legal, and political agencies of dominant ideology. Reification is perhaps most fully realized in the form of fetishized human relationships. In the United States today, the most coercive and unassailable hegemonic apparatus is the institutionalized nuclear family, a social and legal affiliation between individuals so dogmatically fetishized as to have become compulsory. Contemporary American women writers are …

Factors Influencing Effectiveness Of Exhibit Displays On Family Learning In A Public Aquarium., Kodi Rae Jeffery Jan 1999

Factors Influencing Effectiveness Of Exhibit Displays On Family Learning In A Public Aquarium., Kodi Rae Jeffery

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An important goal in science education reform is to create a scientifically literate society. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (1989b) has stated that for people to understand biology, they must first have personal experiences with it. There are severe limitations on the types of firsthand biology experiences available in the classroom. Informal learning institutions, however, are not limited by these constraints. Visitors enjoy a free-choice environment, where they can thoroughly explore things unavailable in most classrooms. Thus, museums are key resources that may help society achieve scientific literacy. This study asked what aspects of the Aquarium of …

College Students' Understanding Of Stereochemistry: Difficulties In Learning And Critical Junctures., Gary Lester Lyon Jan 1999

College Students' Understanding Of Stereochemistry: Difficulties In Learning And Critical Junctures., Gary Lester Lyon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Because stereochemistry is an important part of both high school and college chemistry curricula, a study of difficulties experienced by students in the learning of stereochemistry was undertaken in a one-semester college organic chemistry course. This study, conducted over the course of two semesters with more than two hundred students, utilized clinical interviews, concept maps, and student journals to identify these difficulties, which were then tabulated and categorized. Although student journals were not a productive source of information, the types of difficulties that emerged from the concept maps were compared and contrasted with those that emerged from the clinical interviews. …
