What’S The Score And Game Plan On Teaming In Schools? A Review Of The Literature On Team Teaching And School-Based Problem-Solving Teams., Marshall Welch, Kerrilee Brownell, Susan M. Sheridan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Articles on team teaching and school-based problem solving teams (SBPSTs) published in refereed journals from 1980 to 1997 were reviewed. The review was designed to (a) identify the types of published articles on team teaching and SBPSTs, (b) review articles on team teaching and SBPSTs published in refereed journals, (c) summarize the conclusions of published articles, (d) draw conclusions regarding the current research trends, and (e) present suggestions for continued research in teaming outcome research. This review begins with a characterization of team teaching and SBPSTs, fallowed by a description of the review process. Results indicate that most articles are …

Ernest Meissonier: Master In His Genre, Constance Cain Hungerford, J.L. E. Meissonier Jan 1999

Ernest Meissonier: Master In His Genre, Constance Cain Hungerford, J.L. E. Meissonier

Art & Art History Faculty Works

This study documents the career of one of the most widely known French artists of the nineteenth century. The embodiment of mainstream taste, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier was scorned by the avant-garde, but his jewellike genre paintings were highly regarded by his middle-class audience. Examining his art in detail, Constance Cain Hungerford follows Meissonier from his formation as a wood engraving designer to his virtuous production of small scale genre scenes, his larger battlefield paintings, and his several images of modern revolution and war. Also analyzed are the state administered exhibition system, which Meissonier worked to his advantage, and developments in the …

Fuller And Language, Joseph Vining Jan 1999

Fuller And Language, Joseph Vining

Book Chapters

His style made him distinctive. His substance made him distinctive. The two crossed, were genetically related as we now say. Style and substance each drew on and was implied by the other. One point of their crossing was his sense of the nature of human language; what language was and could be, what it was not and could never be. In 1930, early in his work, Fuller took up the problem of language in a series of articles. Toward the end of his time he republished this initial ground-establishing effort as the little book we now have, Legal Fictions, …

In Defense Of Revenge, William I. Miller Jan 1999

In Defense Of Revenge, William I. Miller

Book Chapters

One of the risks of studying the Icelandic sagas and loving them, is, precisely, loving them. And what is one loving when one loves them? The wit, the entertainment provided by perfectly told tales? And just how are these entertaining tales and this wit separable from their substance: honor, revenge, individual assertion, and yes, some softer values, too, like peacefulness and prudence? Yet one suspects, and quite rightly, that the softer values are secondary and utterly dependent on being responsive to the problems engendered by the rougher values of honor and vengeance. Is it possible to study the sagas and …

Fear, Weak Legs, And Running Away: A Soldier's Story, William Miller Jan 1999

Fear, Weak Legs, And Running Away: A Soldier's Story, William Miller

Book Chapters

Statutes make for appallingly tedious reading unless primitively short and to the point as, for example, this provision in the early Kentish laws of Æthelberht (c. 600): “He who smashes a chin bone [of another] shall pay 20 shillings” or this one from King Alfred (c. 890): “If anyone utters a public slander, and it is proved against him, he shall make no lighter amends than the carving out of his tongue.”1 Yet on very rare occasion a modern statute can rivet our attention and when it does, it seems to do so by mimicking some of the look and …

Cultural Differences And Discrimination: Samoans Before A Public Housing Eviction Board, Richard O. Lempert, Karl Monsma Jan 1999

Cultural Differences And Discrimination: Samoans Before A Public Housing Eviction Board, Richard O. Lempert, Karl Monsma

Book Chapters

In the 1971 case, Griggs v. Duke Power (401 U.S. 424), the United States Supreme Court held that if an employment test (or other mechanism for screening job applicants) had a disparate impact on a group protected by Title VII of The Civil Rights Act of 1964, discrimination in violation of the Act would be presumed unless the employer could prove the "job-relatedness" of the test. (For details on the Griggs case, see England 1992 chap. 5.) The Griggs case represents a high-water mark in the Supreme Court's jurisprudence of discrimination, for it establishes proof rules that can catch both …

Mechanisms Of First Language Forgetting., Ludmila Isurin Jan 1999

Mechanisms Of First Language Forgetting., Ludmila Isurin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present research explored the processes and mechanisms of first language forgetting from linguistic and psychological perspectives. Two studies, one---a case study, another---a controlled experimental study, yielded evidence on L1 loss. The case study involved a 9 year old Russian girl who was adopted by an American family, brought to the US and completely taken out of a Russian-speaking environment. Over the course of one year, changes in L1 morphology, syntax, and vocabulary were investigated using various tasks, e.g. picture description, picture naming, story telling. Data on L1 retention, L2 acquisition, and reaction time were gathered. The results of the …

An Examination Of The Spaced-Retrieval Technique: A Method To Improve Memory In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease., Shannon S. Simmons-D'Gerolamo Jan 1999

An Examination Of The Spaced-Retrieval Technique: A Method To Improve Memory In Older Adults With Probable Alzheimer's Disease., Shannon S. Simmons-D'Gerolamo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study, we used the spaced-retrieval technique as a mnemonic device for those persons with cognitive deficits such as probable Alzheimer's Disease. Three main goals of this research were to gain insight into the long-term effectiveness of the spaced-retrieval technique, examine ways to enhance the overall effectiveness of the spaced-retrieval technique, and adapt spaced-retrieval for applied use in real-world settings. Results indicated that participants did not show savings-in-relearning over a two year follow-up span, but did show it over a one year and six month span. Results provided modest evidence of the effects of exposure to the target-item orientation …

Hellenism And The Independent Theatre Movement In America., Eric Wiley Jan 1999

Hellenism And The Independent Theatre Movement In America., Eric Wiley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation considers influences of the Greek tradition on the rise of the independent theatres in America during the first quarter of the twentieth century. These influences are of two major kinds, those present in the earlier European independent theatre movement, dating back to 1877, with the creation of the Theâtre Libre in Paris, and those found in the American cultural tradition in general. The American branch of the independent theatre movement harbored from its inception a confluence of both these Hellenist strains, as seen in the work of figures such as Maurice Browne, leader of the Chicago Little Theatre, …

Effects Of Repeated Restraint Stress On Tissue Metabolism In Rats., Jun Zhou Jan 1999

Effects Of Repeated Restraint Stress On Tissue Metabolism In Rats., Jun Zhou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It has been reported that repeated restraint stress (RS), 3 hours/day for 3 days, in rats caused sustained weight loss and a temporary drop in daily food intake with no subsequent compensatory overeating during the post stress period. The hypothesis tested in the present study is that RS causes peripheral tissue metabolism changes which account for the abnormal regulation of body weight and food intake during the post stress period. Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to control, pair fed (PF) or RS groups. One day after the end of RS, midbrain urocortin mRNA was at control levels in …
