The Evaluation And Design Of An Undergraduate Music Theory Placement Exam, Barbara Murphy Jan 1999

The Evaluation And Design Of An Undergraduate Music Theory Placement Exam, Barbara Murphy

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

According to the National Association of Schools of Music 1999-2000 Handbook, all music majors must have certain competencies in aural skills and analysis, composition and improvisation, repertory and history, technology, and synthesis of ideas. Generally, students meet these requirements by taking courses in Basic Musicianship which include courses in Theory, Ear-training, and Musicology. These courses comprise 20-35 percent of their curriculum (24-42 hours of a typical 120 semester hour curriculum). Even though NASM states that to be admitted to a baccalaureate degree in music, students should possess a musical background that allows them to "relate musical sound to notation and …

Part Writing, Prose Writing - An Investigation Of Writing-To-Learn In The Music Theory Classroom, Bruce C. Kelley

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

In the last twenty years, educators have advanced the premise that writing, in various forms, can foster learning in every class in every discipline. While we routinely use writing in many ways to communicate, define a position, or make new connections, some forms of writing, such as lists, reminder notes, and diaries, tend to be mental scribbles indecipherable to all but the writer. These scribbles constitute one of language's most private forms: writing for the purpose of bringing personal meaning to a situation that previously had none.

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

MusicCog/99: A Workshop Symposium in Music Cognition reviewed by Edward Klonoski MusicCog/99 was held on the campus of the Ohio State University from May 14-16, 1999. The program described the event as differing from more traditional conferences in that many of the MusicCog/99 presentations were general or review in nature - so that the workshop was an excellent opportunity to gain an overview of the state of the art in music cognition. Presentations covered a broad spectrum of topics including: infants' musical perception, ethnomusicological applications, melodic expectancy, key determination, music and emotion and rhythmic/metric perception. Overall, the papers were very …

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

In this moot court competition bench memo, the Supreme Court the state of Marshall has to decide whether the monitoring and recording of a voice mail message in the work environment constitutes a violation of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act ("ECPA") or an invasion of privacy. Plaintiff's brother is an employee of a for-profit corporation that provides a digital telephone system that allows employee use features such as voice mail. Book Versus Byte: The Prospects And Desirability Of A Paperless Society, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 797 (1999), Charles N. Faerber

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

There is an ominous traffic sign on the electronic superhighway to that much- ballyhooed paperless society. It reads: "Road Under Construction--Completion Date Unknown." To be sure, the vaunted superhighway does extend, perfectly paved, for a good distance, as anyone who has ever made a paperless purchase on the Internet will attest, but the highway engineers have so far been stymied from reaching their digital Valhalla by practical hurdles. And there is another hitch: many travelers do not want to get on the superhighway no matter how far it extends. They prefer unpaved horse-and-buggy thoroughfares that are slower but seem to …

Megan's Law: Analysis On Whether It Is Constitutional To Notify The Public Of Sex Offenders Via The Internet, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1133 (1999), Susan Oakes Jan 1999

Megan's Law: Analysis On Whether It Is Constitutional To Notify The Public Of Sex Offenders Via The Internet, 17 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1133 (1999), Susan Oakes

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Because of the public demand for stronger governmental action against those who commit violent and sexual offenses against children, Congress implemented "Megan's Law" which mandated that the registered information of criminal child sex offenders be unlimited in disclosure so long as the information released is necessary to protect the public. Megan's Law and the Internet (as useful medium for communicating information on sex offenders), fulfill a similar goal as criminal cases receiving media attention because both aid in protecting the public from potential crimes committed by dangerous sex offenders. Megan's Law is constitutional because it is not punitive and because …

Behavioral Problems In Schools: Ways To Encourage Functional Behavior Assessment (Fba) Of Discipline-Evoking Behavior Of Students With Emotional And/Or Behavioral Disorders (Ebd), Jo M. Hendrickson, Robert A. Gable, Maureen A. Conroy

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

Functional behavioral assessment (FBA) of aggressive and negative behaviors that lead to suspension and expulsion is mandated for students with disabilities in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997. This legal requirement is problematic for many school districts as well as teacher preparation programs in that numerous barriers to effective application of FBA exist within our educational institutions. The present article discusses some of the major challenges school districts personnel face in implementing FBAs. A school improvement initiative, Success4, is presented to illustrate an approach that the state of Iowa is taking to overcome these challenges. Finally, …

Its programs enhance quality of life for lesbian, gay and bisexual youth through empowerment-focussed counselling, action research, advocacy and community development, and community education. This article outlines LGBYP’s programs, the principles which guide them, and the unique role they play in addressing hte broad …
