Beyond The Formalism Debate: Expert Reasoning, Fuzzy Logic, And Complex Statutes, Edward S. Adams, Daniel A. Farber Oct 1999

Beyond The Formalism Debate: Expert Reasoning, Fuzzy Logic, And Complex Statutes, Edward S. Adams, Daniel A. Farber

Vanderbilt Law Review

Formalists and antiformalists continue to debate the utility of using legislative history and current social values to interpret statutes. Lost in the debate, however, is a clear model of how judges actually make decisions. Rather than focusing on complex problems presented by actual judicial decisions, formalists and antiformalists concentrate on stylized examples of simple statutes.

In this Article, Professors Adams and Farber construct a more functional model of judicial decisionmaking by focusing on complex problems. They use cognitive psychological research on expert reasoning and techniques from an emerging area in the field of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, to construct their …

Focal Point, Volume 13 Number 01, Portland State University. Regional Research Institute

Research and Training Center - Focal Point

This issue of Focal Point examines the ways in which families with employed caregivers and children with emotional and behavioral disorders manage to meet the demands of employment and family responsibilities. Finding a fit between the demands of work and family life is a struggle for every employed mother and father. For parents whose children have emotional, behavioral, or mental disorders, meeting this challenge can prove extremely stressful, particularly since supportive services are notably lacking. Although Fernandez has estimated that 10% of all employed parents have at least one child with a disability living in their homes, there has been …

The Assessment Of Children With Attachment Disorder: The Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire, The Behavioral And Emotional Rating Scale, And The Biopsychosocial Attachment Types Framework, Alice Myrth Ogilvie Oct 1999

The Assessment Of Children With Attachment Disorder: The Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire, The Behavioral And Emotional Rating Scale, And The Biopsychosocial Attachment Types Framework, Alice Myrth Ogilvie

Dissertations and Theses

Children with attachment disorder (AD) have an ongoing risk of mental health challenges and an exacerbated resistance to traditional treatments. The inability to trust and inadequate relationship skills present a substantial challenge for supervising adults in families, child welfare, juvenile justice, public schools, and other community settings.

This study examined the assessment of AD in children between ages 6 and 18 utilizing two standardized instruments, the Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire and the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale. A new framework developed by the author, Biopsychosocial Attachment Types (BAT), for conceptualizing childhood attachment concerns, was explored as a foundation for assessment …

The Effects Of Task Demand And Knowledge Of Results On Operator Engagement And Vigilance Performance Moderation With A Biocybernetic System, Jamie Lynn Loverde Oct 1999

The Effects Of Task Demand And Knowledge Of Results On Operator Engagement And Vigilance Performance Moderation With A Biocybernetic System, Jamie Lynn Loverde

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study examined whether a biocybernetic system could moderate performance in a vigilance task. The system manipulated critical signal (CS) amplitude based on cybernetic feedback contingencies. Under negative feedback, CS amplitude increased when the index fell below a predetermined level and decreased when the index rose above that level The opposite occurred under positive feedback. The system was expected to initiate more amplitude changes under negative feedback to regulate engagement. Performance feedback (Knowledge of Results; KR) was also provided and was expected to improve performance by motivating participants to pay closer attention to the task.

Forty participants performed a …

Intravascular Lymphomatosis With Bone Marrow Involvement: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Tammy J. Tucker Oct 1999

Intravascular Lymphomatosis With Bone Marrow Involvement: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Tammy J. Tucker

Student Publications

We describe the case of a 56-year-old man who presented with numbness and tingling of the extremities, weakness, and fatigue. Laboratory findings included anemia and thrombocytopenia. A diagnosis of intravascular lymphomatosis was established when liver, omentum, and bone marrow samples were examined. A review of the literature reveals that most cases of intravascular lymphomatosis have cytopenias, mainly anemia and thrombocytopenia, but bone marrow involvement is rare. In our case, a subtle neoplastic infiltrate in the marrow sinusoids was highlighted with a B-cell marker. While immunohistochemical analysis was not performed in most reported cases in the literature, our studies suggest that …

The Influence Of Fathering On Child Outcomes, Judith Joye Lehman Oct 1999

The Influence Of Fathering On Child Outcomes, Judith Joye Lehman

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study examines complex relationships between fathering and children's social, behavioral, and cognitive development. The participants were 57 families with a child between the ages of 7 and 12. Fathers were interviewed about their disciplinary practices, work history, and day to day involvement with their children. Fathers also completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach, 1991) which is designed to assess children's internalizing and externalizing behavior. Mothers were administered the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale - Survey Form (Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984), the CBCL, and a background questionnaire. Children were administered the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1987) and the …

Behavioral And Subjective Measures Of Mental Fatigue And Workload: Examining Allocation Of Effort During Extended Multiple Task Performance, Julie Michele Stark Oct 1999

Behavioral And Subjective Measures Of Mental Fatigue And Workload: Examining Allocation Of Effort During Extended Multiple Task Performance, Julie Michele Stark

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The goal of the present study was to gain a better understanding of behavioral and subjective indicators of mental fatigue. Moreover, the effect of workload and mental fatigue on allocation of effort during prolonged multiple task performance was examined. Workload was manipulated between subjects and time was a within-subjects variable assessed over three consecutive 30-min periods.

A behavioral measure was provided by the Multi - Attribute Task Battery {MAT; Comstock & Arnegard, 1992) that was revised to include a new task. This new task was modeled after Holding's (1983) choice of probability/ effort {COPE) paradigm and was developed to investigate …

Empowerment: What Is It?, Nanette Page, Cheryl E. Czuba Oct 1999

Empowerment: What Is It?, Nanette Page, Cheryl E. Czuba

Journal of Extension

Many use the term empowerment without understanding what it really means. A literature review resulted in no clear definition of the concept, especially one that could cross-disciplinary lines. This article defines empowerment as a multi-dimensional social process that helps people gain control over their own lives. It is a process that fosters power in people for use in their own lives, their communities and in their society, by acting on issues they define as important. The Connecticut People Empowering People program uses this definition to connect research, theory, and practice.
