Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

This proposed Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) provides guidance to auditors in planning and performing auditing procedures for financial statement assertions about financial instruments. The Auditing Standards Board (ASB) believes the guidance is needed primarily because of expanding requirements for financial statements to provide information about the fair value of financial instruments and the increasing tendency for entities to use service organizations to help them manage activities involving financial instruments. This proposed SAS: a. Indicates that an auditor may need special skill or knowledge to plan and perform auditing procedures for certain assertions about financial instruments and provides guidance on …

The Commonweal In The Heartland: Charles T. Kelly And Iowa's Industrial Army, Ryan James Sprau Jan 1999

The Commonweal In The Heartland: Charles T. Kelly And Iowa's Industrial Army, Ryan James Sprau

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Decades before the 1930s, or the period most Americans refer to as the Great Depression, the United States suffered through one of the worst economic crises in national history. While not as devastating nor as prolonged as the economic disaster that affected the United States in the 1930s, the depression that gripped the nation from 1893 to 1897 forced millions out of work. The Commonweal of Christ, more commonly known as the industrial army movement of 1894, offered one solution to the nation's crippling unemployment problem. Crusade founder Jacob S. Coxey planned to lead the nation's unemployed and discontented into …

Weighting Unusual Feature Types, Nicholas Howe, Claire Cardie Jan 1999

Weighting Unusual Feature Types, Nicholas Howe, Claire Cardie

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Feature weighting is known empirically to improve classification accuracy for k-nearest neighbor classifiers in tasks with irrelevant features. Many feature weighting algorithms are designed to work with symbolic features, or numeric features, or both, but cannot be applied to problems with features that do not fit these categories. This paper presents a new k-nearest neighbor feature weighting algorithm that works with any kind of feature for which a distance function can be defined. Applied to an image classification task with unusual set-like features, the technique improves classification accuracy significantly. In tests on standard data sets from the UCI repository, the …

Embedded Training For Complex Information Systems, Brant A. Cheikes Jan 1999

Embedded Training For Complex Information Systems, Brant A. Cheikes

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

One approach to providing affordable operator training in the workplace is to augment applications with intelligent embedded training systems (ETS). Intelligent embedded training is highly interactive: trainees practice realistic problem-solving tasks on the prime application with guidance and feedback from the training system. This article makes three contributions to the theory and technology of ETS design. First, we describe a framework based on Norman’s “stages of user activity” model for defining the instructional objectives of an ETS. Second, we demonstrate a non-invasive approach to instrumenting software applications, thereby enabling them to collaborate with an ETS. Third, we describe a method …

Quality Changes Of Scad (Trachurus Trachurus) Which Are Stored Under Different Chillingconditions And Freezing At-12 °C, Mehmet Demi̇rci̇, H. Hülya Orak

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study was aimed some quality changes and determitation of shelf life of scad (Trachurus trachurus)using different chilling methods and freezing temperature at -12 °C were investigated. Scad (Trachurus trachurus) stored different conditions and different temperature as, in sea water ice and water ice at -1 °C, sea water + sea ice at + 1 °C, water and water ice at + 1 °C and also freezing at -12 °C. In addition to sensory chracteristics also pH, trimethylamine (TMA), total volatile basic ammonia (TVB-N), thiobarbituric (TBA), peroxide value and ammonia, were determined. The results of labratory analysis indicated that …

Relationships Of Modulus Of Rupture To Soil Properties In Konya Plain, Cevdet Şeker, Sai̇m Karakaplan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Some physical and chemical analyses were done in sexteren surface (0-15 cm) soil samples from the area among Konya-Çumra-Karapınar, showing soil crusting. Relationships between sois properties and modulus of ruputre were studied. There was a positive relationship between modulus of rupture and available water silt percentages, dispersion ratio, electrical conductivity, organic matter percentage, lime content and soluble calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfate and chlorine contents. There was a negative relationship between modulus of rupture and sand percentage, aggregate stability, exchangeable calcium content, soluble bicarbonate content. The relationships between modulus of rupture and particle density, field capacity percentage, wilting point per-centage, clay …

The Women Of The Ten, Twent', Thirt': Popular Melodrama Theatre In Turn-Of-The-Century New York, Barbara Meredith Waldinger Jan 1999

The Women Of The Ten, Twent', Thirt': Popular Melodrama Theatre In Turn-Of-The-Century New York, Barbara Meredith Waldinger

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

During the first decade of the twentieth century, when the population of New York City was growing by leaps and bounds because of immigration, urbanization, and industrialization, a short-lived theatre movement known as the "ten-twenty-thirty," or, more familiarly, the "ten, twent', thirt," was born. Originally named for the low prices of the tickets, the term came to encompass various types of touring companies that travelled throughout the country, resident stock companies, and hundreds of plays, mostly melodramas, written expressly for this movement. Created by enterprising producers, managers, and playwrights, the ten, twent', thirt' catered to the needs of the working-class …

When Bad Things Happen To Good Intentions: The Development And Demise Of A Task Force Examining The Drugs-Violence Interrelationship Symposium On Drug Crimes, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

Between 1994-1996, I was one of twenty-eight members of a Drugs-Violence Task Force, created to report to the United States Sentencing Commission specific findings, conclusions, and recommendations concerning the interrelationship (if any) between drugs and violence. Much of the controversy concerning how to approach the drugs-violence problem reflects two conflicting and long-held views of drugs and crime: the criminal justice view, which emphasizes detecting and punishing drug offenders, and the public health view, which advocates treating the drug addiction that leads some individuals to commit crime. Traditionally, the criminal justice view is associated with a “tough on crime” attitude that …

Don’T Fence Me In -- Appllication Of The Unlawful Inclosures Of Public Lands Act To Benefit Wildlife, Chandra Rosenthal, Kara Gillon

Animal Law Review

The Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service manage millions of acres of public land across the United States. Most of this land seres more than one purpose-grazing, mining, recreation, timber, wildlife-and thus must remain available for these uses. Historically, the Unlaujul Inclosures Act (UIA) preserved access for ranchers and homesteaders. More recently, the UIA has also protected access for wildlife whose movements are impeded by fences or other illegal obstructions. This article argues that such protection should be extended to the Sonoran pronghorn antelope in the southnwestern United States.

Animal Cruelty And Violence Against Humans: Making The Connection, Randall Lockwood Jan 1999

Animal Cruelty And Violence Against Humans: Making The Connection, Randall Lockwood

Animal Law Review

The idea that there is a connection between the way individuals treat animals and human beings has a long history in Western popular culture, but a shorter history as the subject of scientific research. Recently, a growing body of evidence has confirmed an association between repeated, intentional abuse of animals and a variety of violent antisocial behaviors including child abuse, domestic violence, and violent criminal activities. The public made this connection before most law-enforcement or menial health officials. Public sentiment for tougher and better-enforced animal cruelty laws is strong, and there has been a dramatic response to recent high-profile animal …
