Backcalculation Of Pavement Layers Moduli Using Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Explicit Finite Element Analysis., Gergis W. William Jan 1999

Backcalculation Of Pavement Layers Moduli Using Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Explicit Finite Element Analysis., Gergis W. William

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

After reviewing the existing literature on FWD testing and backcalculation algorithms, a new backcalculation approach based on Three Dimensional Finite Element Modeling (3D FEM) was developed. This approach accounts for the transient dynamic nature of FWD load, the three dimensional geometry of the pavement structure, and the friction and bonding characteristics of pavement layers interfaces. The 3D FEM backcalculation approach was used to backcalculate the layers moduli of flexible, rigid, and composite pavement sites located in West Virginia. The layers moduli of each site were also evaluated using three widely used backcalculation algorithms: MODULUS, EVERCALC, and MODCOMP. Comparison of their …

The Familial Contexts Of Ego-Resiliency In Pre-Schoolers., Sherry J. Burchett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explored the familial contexts of ego-resiliency. Ego-resiliency is the extent that an individual can modify his impulse expression to meet the demands of changing situations. Sixty mothers of children aged 3 to 6 years along with the children’s teachers were used. Mothers completed the Family Environment Scale and the Hollingshead Index of Social Status. Teachers completed the “Common Language” Child Q-Set to measure ego-resiliency in the child. No sex differences existed in the mean r-value for ego-resiliency. Younger children had higher ego-resiliency levels on the Cohesion, Independence, Active-Recreational Orientation, Moral Religious Emphasis, and Control subscales. Families high in …

The Effect Of The Electrode Composition On Electron Transfer Through An Electroactive Monolayer., Kwansik Yoon Jan 1999

The Effect Of The Electrode Composition On Electron Transfer Through An Electroactive Monolayer., Kwansik Yoon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis describes the development of methods for determining the rate constants between a single type of an electroactive self-assembled monolayer on four metals: Au, Pt, Ag, and Hg. Marcus density-of-states theory predicts that the standard rate constant is proportional to the density of states (DOS) of the metal. The DOS increases by a factor of ten for the four metals above. Tafel plots are obtained from which the standard rate constant and the reorganization energy are extracted. Within experimental uncertainty, the standard rate constant is the same on Au, Pt, and Ag. Surprisingly, the reorganization energy is half as …

Does Culture Translate: Can We Make The Words Our Own?, Kathleen C. Gallivan Jan 1999

Does Culture Translate: Can We Make The Words Our Own?, Kathleen C. Gallivan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A collaborative effort between the Departments of Theatre and Foreign Languages, the study, using ethnographic techniques, documents the process of developing cultural awareness of a young group of actors as they rehearsed a post Spanish Civil War play. Analysis of data collected over five weeks through interviews, a demographic questionnaire, and observations by both the thesis director and the researcher reveal that with motivation and a little guidance students will connect, and further, understand another culture. These findings are significant since the use of theatre in this fashion offers a means to motivate students and peak interest in target culture, …

Comparing Moral Values In Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's "Miss Sara Sampson" And Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter"., Karsten Dieter Kleine Jan 1999

Comparing Moral Values In Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's "Miss Sara Sampson" And Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter"., Karsten Dieter Kleine

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the impact of rigid moral codes on women by comparing two works, Lessing’s Miss Sara Sampson, (1775), and Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, (1850). Although the works were written in different centuries and continents, they share a common theme: the clash between patriarchal control and women’s quest for self-determination. In each work, a beautiful young woman violates the social code by becoming involved in an illicit love affair, and because of this transgression and her refusal to renounce her love, is severely punished. Also in each work, the father-daughter relationship is highlighted and can be seen to symbolize …

This study investigated whether the concept of meiosis could be learned successfully by the use of a modified teaching approach based specifically on research recommendations. Modifications included (a) using student generated diagrams, (b) reducing the amount of vocabulary, ( c) clarifying and differentiating the terms used, ( d) using the cell cycle to …

The Impact Of The Internet On Democratic Discourse, Dalia K. Hamed Jan 1999

The Impact Of The Internet On Democratic Discourse, Dalia K. Hamed

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Internet has demonstrated the ability to empower its users by giving them more accurate information about matters of political, professional, and organizational concerns. While many believe that the Internet will fundamentally change political discourse, others argue that it is just another communications tool among many that may affect how governments function, but it will not affect democratic discourse. The thesis argues that unless some requirements are met, the Internet potential as a new democratic forum will not be fulfilled. Concepts such as freedom of speech, democracy, and democratic communication are essential to analyzing the potential use of the Internet …

Technology, Professional Practice, And Ethics: Survey Findings And Implications, Mark R. Mcminn, Trey Buchanan, Brent M. Ellens, Molly K. Ryan

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

If a psychologist loses treatment records because of a computer failure, is it an ethical violation? The widespread growth of technology has outpaced the development of ethical standards for questions such as this, resulting in areas of uncertainty for psychologists. Four hundred twenty psychologists in independent practice rated the ethicality and their frequency of using 40 technologies. Technologies pertaining to the support functions of a psychologist's office are commonly used, but those technologies directly affecting clinical services are rarely used. More than half of the 40 items received equivocal ratings on ethicality, suggesting psychologists need guidelines and training for the …

Values Affecting Collaboration Among Psychologists And Evangelical Clergy, Timothy P. Chaddock, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1999

Values Affecting Collaboration Among Psychologists And Evangelical Clergy, Timothy P. Chaddock, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Previous research has shown that shared values are important to both clergy and psychologists when considering the possibility of collaborating with one another, but it is not clear which values must be shared. Eighty-one psychologists and 56 evangelical Protestant clergy were surveyed using a values questionnaire developed by Jensen and Bergin (1988) with some additional items specifically pertaining to evangelical beliefs, revealing differences within value themes between clergy and psychologists. The epistemological foundations of the two professions create obstacles to collaboration, suggesting a need for psychologists to develop trusting relationships with clergy, engage in specialized training, and reevaluate the post-modern …

Glycoprotein Ib-V-Ix, A Receptor For Von Willebrand Factor, Couples Physically And Functionally To The Fc Receptor Y-Chain, Fyn, And Lyn To Activate Human Platelets, Shahrokh Falati, Christine E. Edmead, Alastair W. Poole

Articles & Chapters

The adhesion molecule von Willebrand factor (vWF) activates platelets upon binding 2 surface receptors, glycoprotein (GP) Ib-V-IX and integrin aIIbb3. We have used 2 approaches to selectively activate GP Ib using either the snake venom lectin alboaggregin-A or mutant recombinant forms of vWF (DA1-vWF and RGGS-vWF) with selective binding properties to its 2 receptors. We show that activation of GP Ib induces platelet aggregation, secretion of 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT), and an increase in cytosolic calcium. Syk becomes tyrosine phosphorylated and activated downstream of GP Ib, and associates with several tyrosinephosphorylated proteins including the Fc receptor g-chain through interaction with Syk …

Aversion Therapy, Rodger K. Bufford Jan 1999

Aversion Therapy, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "Aversion therapy uses a number of techniques and stimuli to weaken or eliminate undesirable responses such as deviant sexual behavior and substance abuse. In theory punishment is used to directly reduce the frequency of undesired behaviors through contingent presentation or removal of a stimulus, while aversion, or aversive counter-conditioning, seeks to change the undesirable response indirectly by altering the functions of the discriminative and reinforcing stimuli. In practice this distinction is somewhat blurred, since many aversion procedures have both punishing and stimulus-altering effects."

Covert Modeling, Rodger K. Bufford Jan 1999

Covert Modeling, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Excerpt: "A cognitive process in which individuals change response patterns through imagining themselves engaging in the desired responses rather than by observing another person model the responses. Since these new responses are weak, even at the imaginal level, it is essential that they be reinforced in order to strengthen and maintain them. This reinforcement normally is self-administered. Covert modeling thus involves a combination of modeling and self-control procedures, all conducted internally in the form of thought and fantasy."
