Paper Session Ii-D - Science Communication For The Life Sciences At Kennedy Space Center, T. W. Dreschel Ph.D.

Space Congress® Proceedings

In the Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created and directed to: Provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information concerning its activities and the results thereof. Horack and Treise (1998) define science communication as: the process through which a message of new knowledge or technology is delivered to a particular customer, in a way that adds value to the research itself, because knowledge has been shared with someone who wants or needs it for some use. The Effects Of Positive Intervention Strategies On At-Risk Twelfth Grade Students, Barbara M. Castleberry Apr 1999

The Effects Of Positive Intervention Strategies On At-Risk Twelfth Grade Students, Barbara M. Castleberry

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of positive intervention strategies on the attendance rate and academic progress of fifteen identified at-risk twelfth grade students using an action research design. Additional purposes of this study included demonstration of the intern's leadership skills in problem analysis, organizational ability, decision-making techniques and motivational ability. Mathematical analysis was used to determine if the attendance rate and grade point averages of the identified at-risk twelfth grade students increased or decreased over their attendance rate and grade point averages in the eleventh grade as a result of positive intervention strategies. Also analyzed …

This Cat's Meow: Individual Variation Among Domestic Cats In Maternal Response To An Unrelated Kitten, Theressa Joanne Silver Apr 1999

This Cat's Meow: Individual Variation Among Domestic Cats In Maternal Response To An Unrelated Kitten, Theressa Joanne Silver

Dissertations and Theses

Non-offspring nursing and adoption are puzzling behaviors seen in a number of mammalian species (Riedman, 1982; Packer et al., 1992). Although domestic cats show a proclivity for adopting strange kittens, there is a great deal of individual variation in the behavior. The goal of this project was to determine the feasibility of using behavioral observations and other measures of a mother cat's personality to predict her reaction to a strange kitten. Twelve female domestic cats with litters of kittens were tested. Three behavioral tests were done with each cat: New Person Test (NPT), Familiar Person Test (FPT), and Novel Box …

Needling Around: Discovering The Factors Affecting Physician Opinion On Acupuncture, Crea Fusco '99 Apr 1999

Needling Around: Discovering The Factors Affecting Physician Opinion On Acupuncture, Crea Fusco '99

Honors Projects

This paper investigates the effects of the independent variables, age, exposure to acupuncture, knowledge of acupuncture, level of religiosity, physician referrals for acupuncture and physicians type of practice on the dependent variable, opinion of acupuncture. Using bivariate cross-tabulations, gamma and linear regression analysis, exposure, knowledge and physician referrals were found to have a significant relationship with opinion of acupuncture. The self-administered questionnaire was mailed to all physicians and surgeons of the Bloomington! Normal IL community who were listed in the April 1998 GTE phonebook. Respondent's ages ranged from 29 to 95 years old, the mean equaling 46.4 years old. Four …

Can A Multidisciplinary Team Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay For Elderly Trauma Patients?, Beth A. Ramsey Apr 1999

Can A Multidisciplinary Team Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay For Elderly Trauma Patients?, Beth A. Ramsey

Masters Theses

Elderly trauma patients often experience prolonged hospital stays. This study was done to determine if a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care would decrease hospital length of stay (LOS) for elderly trauma patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Using a descriptive, correlational design, a convenience sample of 74 elderly patients aged 65 to 99 years was obtained from a trauma registry. The hypothesis that hospital LOS decreases for elderly trauma patients in the ICU who have a team approach to care was not supported using the t-test for independent means (t=1.6, df=72, p=.114). A second hypothesis proposed that the …
