The 1907 Admission Of Land-Grant University Depository Libraries: A 90-Year Perspective, Bert Chapman Jul 1999

The 1907 Admission Of Land-Grant University Depository Libraries: A 90-Year Perspective, Bert Chapman

Libraries Research Publications

This presentation of how land-grant university libraries became federal depository libraries in 1907 examines the principal legislative statutes creating the land-grant university system. It proceeds to cover how a congressional Printing Commission, concerned with eliminating duplicative governmental publications, also produced legislation granting federal depository status to the libraries of land-grant universities. There is also discussion of the presence of GPO Access gateways at many land-grant university depositories and the continuing relevance of the land-grant university service ideal to the depository library program during its transition to an increasingly electronic environment. The historical evolution of America’s rural electric industry, community network …

Liming Of Vineyard Soils, Thomas J. Rice Jul 1999

Liming Of Vineyard Soils, Thomas J. Rice

Earth and Soil Sciences

Liming vineyard soils to increase soil pH and raise calcium levels has been practiced for centuries in the humid areas of the world where soils tend to be more acid. Today, liming is increasingly practiced in the semiarid central coast regions of California, where liming of vineyards was unheard of even a decade ago.
Past agricultural practices, such as the addition of sulfur, acid-forming nitrogen fertilizers, and organic soil amendments, have caused soil acidification. Previously, most of these lands were either open space, range lands, or planted to grain crops.
To avoid unnecessary expense and protect the soil from environmental …

The Translocation Of Barramundi. A Discussion Paper., Makaira Pty Ltd

Fisheries Management Papers

There is recognisable economic benefit to the translocation of barramundi, but there is also a need to ensure the translocation will not adversely impact upon the genetic diversity, introduce disease or impact on the natural environment and biodiversity. This discussion paper has been prepared to provide information to assist in the assessment of the possible impact of translocation of barramundi into and within Western Australia, for the purposed of recreational stock enhancement, aquaculture development and domestic stocking. In contemplating the translocation any aquatic species, signigicant economic and social benefits must be balanced with biological and environmental risks; that is, the …

Involving Students In The Development Of A Peer Education Program For College Women, Laura Nichols, Linda Lumley Jul 1999

Involving Students In The Development Of A Peer Education Program For College Women, Laura Nichols, Linda Lumley

Sociology

The main purpose of this study was to assess the potential interest of college women in participating in a new peer education program on a college campus of approximately 18,000 students in the Midwest while a lso involving students in the instrument design. We expected that students would be interested in such a program and that their inclusion in the research process would also serve as a means to recruit future peer educators. The research was conducted in four stages: (a) An initial survey was developed based on peer education topics used at other universities, (b) this instrument was presented …

Faculty Publications

Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. These analyses indicate that disturbances to pristine tropical lands will …

Japanese Brome Impacts On Western Wheatgrass In Northern Great Plains Rangelands: An Update, M. R. Haferkamp, R. K. Heitschmidt Jul 1999

Japanese Brome Impacts On Western Wheatgrass In Northern Great Plains Rangelands: An Update, M. R. Haferkamp, R. K. Heitschmidt

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Japanese brome (Bromus japonicas Thunb.) is an annual grass that has invaded thousands of hectares of Northern Great Plains rangelands. We studied the effect of Japanese brome on the current year's increase in biomass in a plant community in the Northern Great Plains dominated by western wheatgrass [Pascopyrum smithii Rydb. (Love)]. In our experiment, brome seedlings were either removed or left in place in replicated l-m2 plots. Above-ground biomass of western wheatgrass increased (891 to 1,095 kg ha-1 ) with the removal of Japanese brome. However, total above-ground biomass decreased (1,873 to 1,334 kg ha-1 …
