The Development Of A Program For The Retention Of New Members In The New Jerusalem Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Enell Oswald Hall

Doctor of Ministry Projects

This dissertation evaluates a program that was developed for the retention of new members in the New Jerusalem Seventh-day Adventist Church. One of the greatest needs of new Christians is help in establishing a meaningful relationship within the body of Christ. The church, not the new converts, is primarily responsible for the process of assimilation. Two strategies were implemented at the New Jerusalem Church: 1. A study was conducted to analyze the growth pattern of the church for the past ten years. Two groups of members were surveyed— those baptized within the past eighteen Reproduced with permission of the copyright …

Association Of Late Embryonic Mortality In Beef Cows With Concentrations Of Estradiol-17beta And Prostaglandin F(2)Alpha., Phillip J. Bridges Jan 1999

Association Of Late Embryonic Mortality In Beef Cows With Concentrations Of Estradiol-17beta And Prostaglandin F(2)Alpha., Phillip J. Bridges

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The relationship of luteal function and embryonic survival to concentrations of estradiol-17β or prostaglandin (PG) F2α was evaluated after induction of replacement corpora lutea (CL) in lutectomized beef cows maintained on flurogestone acetate (FGA). On day 26 of pregnancy the CL was enucleated, and the ovary contralateral to the gravid uterine horn was removed. Pregnancy was maintained initially by the administration of FGA (6 mg, s.c.) every 12 h, beginning 12 h before lutectomy. Between days 28 and 31, when a follicle had grown to 10 mm in diameter, cows were treated with hCG (1000 IU, i.m.) to induce formation …

Rural Women And Economic Survival Strategies In The Former Bantustans: A Case Study From The Northwest Province, South Africa., Amy Danielle Pratt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research examines the role of gender in African women’s economic co-operatives in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The theoretical frameworks of feminist geography and gender and development reveal the interconnections between issues of women, work, and rural economic development. Background information is presented to illustrate the complexities of rural African women’s economic exclusion under apartheid and today, and a case study approach is utilized to reveal the development and viability of two particular economic co-operatives. Issues concerning the organization, membership, production, and markets of the two co operatives are discussed, as well as the relationship between the co-operatives …

The Effects Of Land-Use History On Plant Species Diversity And Abundance In Dambo Wetlands In Zimbabwe., Fortune Feresu Shonhiwa Jan 1999

The Effects Of Land-Use History On Plant Species Diversity And Abundance In Dambo Wetlands In Zimbabwe., Fortune Feresu Shonhiwa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Land-use history in Zimbabwe has caused dramatic differences in erosion severity between Commercial and Communal Lands. High population numbers have been found to be positively correlated with the extent of eroded area in Communal Lands. Dambo wetlands are particularly vulnerable to this population pressure as they are isolated wet areas supporting plant growth during the six to eight months of the dry season. In Zimbabwe, they cover 1.3 million hectares of the country. This study examines the plant composition and seed bank of these wetlands and compares vegetation in dambos with contrasting land-use histories, communal versus commercial. Communal Lands are …

Attitudes To Biotechnology And Genetically Modified Food : A Review, Juliana Rose Cannon Jan 1999

Attitudes To Biotechnology And Genetically Modified Food : A Review, Juliana Rose Cannon

Theses : Honours

Debate surrounds the introduction of new biotechnological applications such as genetically modified food (GMF). With this in mind a critical review of the debate, it's emerging themes, and approaches to measurement was undertaken. The intention of this review was to argue that while existing empirical measures have advanced our understanding of attitudes to GMF, they are limited both conceptually and methodologically. Overall, the validity and reliability of research support was compromised. Conceptually, attitudes to GMF were composed of a number of potential dimensions that have yet to be measured. Adherence to sound scale construction techniques may facilitate more reliable and …

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov Jan 1999

To Immunize Or Not To Immunize, That Is The Question! An Investigation Into The Reasons Behind Parents' Decisions In Immunizing Their Children Against Whooping Cough In Western Australia, Eliena Kirov

Theses : Honours

Demographic data on the immunization status of Australia indicates that Western Australia has relatively low immunization coverage for whooping cough. Australian quantitative studies have been carried out on parental attitudes in Australia towards immunization, but there has been no analysis of parents' reasons for their decisions. This study identified the key issues that influenced the decisions made by the target group of parents and explored their decision-making in more depth. The data from this study could also be used to supplement the information currently available to health workers. Eight participants with children between the ages of 2 months and 6 …

Diseases Of Meaning, Manifestations Of Health, And Metaphor, Peter J. Whitehouse Jan 1999

Diseases Of Meaning, Manifestations Of Health, And Metaphor, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

Disease and health are commonly thought of as distinct opposites. We propose a different view in which both may be seen to be facets of healthy functioning, each necessary for the other, each giving rise to the other. Thus, disease may be thought of as a manifestation of health. It is the healthy response of an organism striving to maintain physical, psychologic, and spiritual equilibrium. Disease is not necessarily to be avoided, blocked, or suppressed. Rather, it should be understood to be a process of transformation. The process should therefore be facilitated because it is an integral part of the …

Nutritional And Health Behavior Of The Indigenous Pregnant Women In The Community Of Tunshi-San Nicolas, Chimborazo Province, Sandra Ordonez Gavilanez

Theses and Dissertations

The nutritional food situation in our country is alarming, by what has been classified as a major public health problem, their principle manifestation is the protein malnutrition- energy, with a high prevalence in urban zones- marginal and rural population. It is considered that the main causes that originate on one hand are still deteriorating at a level of income in the popular sectors with the consequent impossibility of access to basic services such as housing, education, stable jobs, health services (drinking water, sewage, etc.) appropriate food regimes, greatly affecting those vulnerable groups such as children and women in fertile years. …

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Antitrust And Trade Regulation, Michael F. Urbanski, James R. Creekmore Jan 1999

Annual Survey Of Virginia Law: Antitrust And Trade Regulation, Michael F. Urbanski, James R. Creekmore

University of Richmond Law Review

During the past year, the United States Supreme Court, in two decisions of significance, refused to summarily censure conduct having legitimate, procompetitive benefits. In similar fashion, the United States Court ofAppeals for the Fourth Circuit continued to scrutinize antitrust claims, rejecting those failing to measure up to pleading and proof requirements, while also reaffirming the vitality of the state action immunity doctrine as a bar to those that did. Meanwhile, Virginia's federal district courts grappled with time worn conspiracy challenges to medical staff privileging decisions, while simultaneously forging new ground in one of the first cases to consider market definition …

Trade Liberalization As A Vehicle For Adapting To Global Warming, Thomas Hertel, Timothy Randhir Jan 1999

Trade Liberalization As A Vehicle For Adapting To Global Warming, Thomas Hertel, Timothy Randhir

GTAP Working Papers Archive

This study assesses the interaction between climate change and agricultural trade policies. We distinguish between two dimensions of agricultural trade policy: market insulation and subsidy levels. Building on the previous work of Tsigas, Frisvold and Kuhn (1997) we find that, in the presence of current levels of agricultural subsidies, increased price transmission --as called for under the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture-- reduces global welfare in the wake of climate change. This is due to the positive correlation between productivity changes and current levels of agricultural support. Increases in subsidized output under climate change tend to exacerbate inefficiencies in the …

Inhibition Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis By Phenolic Compounds, S. S. T. Hua, K. O. Grosjean, J. L. Baker Jan 1999

Inhibition Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis By Phenolic Compounds, S. S. T. Hua, K. O. Grosjean, J. L. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The phenolic compounds acetosyringone, syringaldehyde and sinapinic acid inhibited the biosynthesis of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by A. flavus. Acetosyringone was the most active among the three compounds, inhibiting aflatoxin level by 82% at 2m mol l-1. The synthesis and accumulation of norsolorinic acid, an aflatoxin biosynthetic intermediate, was also inhibited. These results suggest that at least one step early in the AFB1 biosynthetic pathway is inhibited by the phenolics.
