Training Needs Of Affordable Housing Nonprofits: How To Develop “Better Total Management”?, G Stevenson Smith

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The following report analyzes the data collected from two surveys as that data relates to the training needs of affordable housing non profits (AHN). The first survey was administered in March to nonprofit managers attending a seminar in Charleston. The second survey is a collection of audio taped phone interviews with the executive directors of 28 AHNs conducted in July. The purpose of both surveys was to collect data about the training needs of AHNs in the State of West Virginia. In addition the first survey collected background information about business practices, funding sources, and computer/software usage. Although the first …

Early Childhood Education: The Disadvantaged Child: How Early Is Early?, Eileen O'Neill Jan 1999

Early Childhood Education: The Disadvantaged Child: How Early Is Early?, Eileen O'Neill

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper is influenced by many years of work in residential services for children in need. My experience has spanned the changing nature of residential care, from the group home model of the 1970 and 1980's - which provided long term care to children, apart from their family, with little or no family contact, - to the more individualised care offered in units today for children with very specific needs, for short periods of time, usually in conjunction with their own families. This is in keeping with the spirit of the Child Care Act (1991). Children admitted to care are …

An Explanatory Model For The Maya Ethnomedical Syndrome Cha'lam Tsots, George E. Luber Jan 1999

An Explanatory Model For The Maya Ethnomedical Syndrome Cha'lam Tsots, George E. Luber

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Although the ethnomedical system of the Highland Maya is generally well understood, little is known about the Tzeltal Maya ethnomedical syndrome Cha'lam tsots, or "second hair." In an attempt to better understand the emic conceptualization, and possible biomedical equivalence of Cha'lam tsots, ethnographic data from semi-structured interviews was collected from the Tzeltal Maya municipality of Tenejapa, in the central highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. Analysis of explanatory models elicited from 20 informants revealed a generalized agreement as to the etiology, symptomatology, course, prognosis, and treatments of this illness. Analysis of these findings will help guide further research into the …

Colletotrichum Trifolii Mutants Disrupted In The Catalytic Subunit Of Camp-Dependent Protein Kinase Are Nonpathogenic, Zhonghui Yang, Martin B. Dickman Jan 1999

Colletotrichum Trifolii Mutants Disrupted In The Catalytic Subunit Of Camp-Dependent Protein Kinase Are Nonpathogenic, Zhonghui Yang, Martin B. Dickman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Colletotrichum trifolii is the fungal pathogen of alfalfa that causes anthracnose disease. For successful plant infection, this fungus must undergo a series of morphological transitions following conidial attachment, including germination and subsequent differentiation, resulting in appressorium formation. Our previous studies with pharmacological effectors of signaling pathways have suggested the involvement of cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (PKA) during these processes. To more precisely evaluate the role of PKA in C. trifolii morphogenesis, the gene encoding the catalytic (C) subunit of PKA (Ct-PKAC) was isolated, sequenced, and inactivated by gene replacement. Southern blot analysis with C. trifolii genomic DNA …

Perkinsus Marinus Extracellular Protease Modulates Survival Of Vibrio Vulnificus In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Hemocytes, B. D. Tall, J. F. La Peyre, J. W. Bier, M. D. Miliotis, D. E. Hanes, M. H. Kothary, D. B. Shah, M. Faisal

Faculty Publications

The in vitro effects of the Perkinsus marinus serine protease on the intracellular survival of Vibrio vulnificus in oyster hemocytes were examined by using a time-course gentamicin internalization assay. Results showed that protease-treated hemocytes were initially slower to internalize V. vulnificus than untreated hemocytes. After 1 h, the elimination of K vulnificus by treated hemocytes was significantly suppressed compared with hemocytes infected with invasive and noninvasive controls. Our data suggest that the serine protease produced by P. marinus suppresses the vibriocidal activity of oyster hemocytes to effectively eliminate V. vulnificus, potentially leading to conditions favoring higher numbers of vibrios in …

Struggle, Aspiration, And Obsession: The Discourse Of Diet, Emily K. L. Jahn

Masters Theses

Research has shown that members of society are generally dissatisfied with their current weight. This study examines how individuals socially construct meanings of the word diet and the dieting process. Participants (n=443) were males and females who ranged in age from 7 to 68. Each were given a diet questionnaire to complete. The older groups were given the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Scale in addition to the survey. The text for analysis was obtained by the surveys and four focus groups. The resulting data indicated that both males and females perceive the word diet means "to lose weight." …

Symbol Of Youth, Savior From Aging: Dialectical Relationship Between American Attitudes On Vitamin E And Toward Aging, Thalia Rios Jan 1999

Symbol Of Youth, Savior From Aging: Dialectical Relationship Between American Attitudes On Vitamin E And Toward Aging, Thalia Rios

Masters Theses

This study explores the dialectical relationship between American attitudes about Vitamin E and American attitudes toward aging. Through an examination of this dialectic, I will demonstrate that Vitamin E's history has contributed greatly to current American discourses on aging. For many Americans, the vitamin symbolizes youth and health because they perceive that its use can prevent or slow the aging process. During the 1990s, many Americans' early negative perceptions of Vitamin E as a quack substance have changed, partly due to recent research advances and studies that have further elucidated its powerful antioxidant function against harmful free radicals. Meanwhile, many …

Maternal-Fetal Conflicts, The Social Construction Of Maternal Deviance, And Some Thoughts About Love And Justice, April L. Cherry Jan 1999

Maternal-Fetal Conflicts, The Social Construction Of Maternal Deviance, And Some Thoughts About Love And Justice, April L. Cherry

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

FIRST PARAGRAPH: In the short amount of time that we have together today, I would like to accomplish three tasks. First, I would like to offer a brief overview of what and whom we are talking about when we talk about "maternal-fetal conflicts." Second, I would like to discuss some of the assumptions that are held about the women involved in these "conflicts," with the hope that giving voice to these assumptions might help us better understand why we may be willing to accept the coerced medical treatment of pregnant women, or legal sanctions against pregnant women who refuse treatment …

Transient Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy In Premature Infants, Elly (Eloisa) V. Falzarano Jan 1999

Transient Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy In Premature Infants, Elly (Eloisa) V. Falzarano

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study is to examine whether iatrogenic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in premature infants might be induced by routine neonatal therapies including the administration of hyperalimentation, dexamethasone, and/or insulin infusion. Infants with gestational age < 32 weeks and birth weight < 1250 grams were studied. Echocardiographic and metabolic analyses were performed before 48 hours of age at enrollment, and again at one, two, three, and five weeks thereafter. Eleven patients were studied with a median gestational age of 26 weeks (range 24-29 weeks) and median birth weight of 804 grams (range 609-1230 grams). All eleven subjects received hyperalimentation, five received dexamethasone, and two received both dexamethasone and an exogenous insulin infusion. The ratio of interventricular septal to left ventricular posterior wall thickness increased significantly from 1.15±0.06 at enrollment to 1.51±0.06 (p<0.05) during the third week of life, consistent with the diagnosis of HCM. This ratio returned to a normal value of 1.17±0.1 by the fifth week of life. C-peptide excreted in the urine peaked during the fourth week of life at 253±99 μg/g creatinine, and a peak in circulating insulin levels to 19±4 μU/ml occurred during the third week of life. Both the excreted C-peptide and circulating insulin levels decreased by the end of the fifth week of life. All results are expressed as the mean±SEM. This preliminary data suggest that the development of a transient hypertrophic cardiomyopathy occurs in premature infants, and appears to resolve as caloric intake, insulin production, and circulating insulin levels decrease.
