The Effects Of Free Fatty Acids On Gluconeogenesis And Glycogenolysis In Normal Subjects, X Chen, N Iqbal, G Boden Feb 1999

The Effects Of Free Fatty Acids On Gluconeogenesis And Glycogenolysis In Normal Subjects, X Chen, N Iqbal, G Boden

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

We have quantitatively determined gluconeogenesis (GNG) from all precursors, using a novel method employing 2H20 to address the question of whether changes in plasma free fatty acids (FFA) affect GNG in healthy, nonobese subjects. In the first study (n = 6), plasma FFA were lowered at 16 to 20 hours with nicotinic acid (NA) and were then allowed to rise at 20 to 24 hours (FFA rebound after administration of NA). FFA decreased from 387 microM at 16 hours to 43 microM at 20 hours, and then rebounded to 1,823 microM at 24 hours. GNG decreased from 58.1% at 16 …

Access Denied: Incarcerated Juveniles And Their Right Of Access To Courts, Amy E. Webbink Feb 1999

Access Denied: Incarcerated Juveniles And Their Right Of Access To Courts, Amy E. Webbink

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In the current flux of an increasingly punitive juvenile justice system, one of the system's great injustices receives little attention. Unconstitutional conditions of confinement for juveniles do not receive appropriate legal exposure. Challenges to these conditions are more difficult in light of the Supreme Court's recent restriction of a prisoner's right of access to the courts. This Note will analyze why a different standard of "meaningful access" is necessary to protect juveniles.

Tribal Colleges: An Introduction, American Indian Higher Education Consortium, The Institute For Higher Education Policy Feb 1999

Tribal Colleges: An Introduction, American Indian Higher Education Consortium, The Institute For Higher Education Policy

Tribal Nations Documents

Tribal Colleges were created over the last 30 years in response to the higher education needs of American Indians, and generally serve geographically isolated populations that have no other means of accessing education beyond the high school level. They have become increasingly essential to educational opportunity for American Indian students, a status they have achieved in a relatively brief period of time. Tribal Colleges are unique institutions that combine personal attention with cultural relevance, in such a way as to encourage American Indians—especially those living on reservations—to overcome the barriers in higher education.

The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strained: Interpreting The Notice Requirement Of The Federal Tort Claims Act, Ann Mcguire Feb 1999

The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strained: Interpreting The Notice Requirement Of The Federal Tort Claims Act, Ann Mcguire

Michigan Law Review

Under the Federal Tort Claims Act of 1946 {FfCA), the United States is liable for tort claims "in the same manner and to the same extent as a private individual under like circumstances." This limited waiver of sovereign immunity, subject to certain exceptions, grants federal district courts exclusive jurisdiction over civil tort actions against the United States for money damages. The Act requires a claimant suing the United States to file her claim first with the appropriate administrative agency. If the agency denies the claim, it mails a notice of final denial, and the claimant then has six months to …

Attitudes Of Extension Professionals Toward Diversity Education In 4-H Programs, Patreese D. Ingram

Journal of Extension

America is becoming an increasingly diverse society. As an informal educational program for youth development, what role should 4-H programs have in helping youth learn about cultures that are different than their own? The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of Extension professionals toward diversity education in 4-H programs. Pennsylvania Extension professionals were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward the importance of diversity education and the recruitment of youth from different backgrounds. Although Pennsylvania Extension professionals were generally supportive of diversity in 4-H /youth development programs, there is clearly a need to strengthen diversity efforts and provide diversity …
